UVB-76 (sometimes referred to as UZB-76) is the callsign of a shortwave radio station that usually broadcasts on the frequency 4625 kHz (AM suppressed lower sideband). It is known among radio listeners by the nickname The Buzzer. It features a short, monotonous UVB-76_07-08-2010.ogg, repeating at a rate of approximately over 25 tones per minute, for 24 hours per day. The station has been observed since around 1982. On rare occasions, the buzzer signal is interrupted and a voice transmission in Russian takes place. Frequently, distant conversations and other background noises can be heard behind the buzzer; this suggests that the buzzing device is behind a live and constantly open microphone (rather than a recording or automated sound being fed through playback equipment) or that a microphone may have been turned on accidentally. One such occasion was on November 3, 2001, when a conversation in Russian was heard: "Я — 143. Не получаю генератор." "Идёт такая работа от аппаратной." ("I am 143. Not receiving the generator (oscillator)." "That stuff comes from hardware room."), in September 2, 2010, it was possible to hear a voice in the background saying "[I am] on site, working, but she is weak", followed shortly for a sequence of Swan_Lake
Voice messages & other sounds
Voice messages from UVB-76 were very rare until a sudden spate of activity in August 2010. They are usually given in Russian by a live, male voice and repeated. Around 7 such messages have been intercepted in over twenty years of (non-continuous) observation. Some well known examples of such messages include:

Location and function
The station's transmitter is located just outside Povarovo, Russia at , which is about halfway between Zelenograd and Solnechnogorsk and 40 km northwest of Moscow, near the village of Lozhki. The location and callsign were unknown until the first voice broadcast of 1997.
The purpose of UVB-76 has not been confirmed by government or broadcast officials. However the former Minister of Communications and Informatics of the Republic of Lithuania has written that the purpose of the voice messages is to confirm that operators at receiving stations are alert.
Another hypothesized explanation for the constant buzzer is for testing a high-frequency Doppler method for ionosphere research, in which radio waves are reflected from ionosphere inhomogeneities. This method involves comparing a continuous radio transmission which is reflected by the ionosphere with a stable basic generator. The continuously transmitted carrier frequency currently used for this research matches that of the UVB-76 (4.625 MHz).

*On Sept 2, 2010 At 16:36UTC there was a recorded message of a man repeatedly counting, "Recorded at 16:36UTC", UVB-76.com Throughout the day, 2 voices had gone on air, a male, and a female, both reciting numbers 1-10.
*On Sept 3, 2010 At 04:16 UTC the station broadcasted "the buzz" went silent, and returned with Dance of the little swans playing http://soundcloud.com/tymaxbeta/uvb-76-buzzer-music-01
*On Sep 3, 2010 at 12:00 and on, layers of morse code was heard by many shortwave listeners.
