The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship contested in and owned by the American promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The title was introduced into WWE in 1979, which was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) at the time. Pat Patterson, holder of the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship, had unified the title with a South American Heavyweight Championship won in a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The WWF considered the Intercontinental Championship to be the second most important championship in the company, after the WWF Championship.
The championship is contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute scripted finishes rather than contend in direct competition. The first champion was Pat Patterson, who won the championship in 1979, while as of February 2011 the champion is Kofi Kingston. Overall, there have been 66 different champions, with Chris Jericho having the most reigns at nine.

The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling championship contested in and owned by the American promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The title was introduced into WWE in 1979, which was known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) at the time. Pat Patterson, holder of the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship, had unified the title with a South American Heavyweight Championship won in a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.<ref>{{Cite web|title=Pat Patterson|url=http://slam.canoe.ca/SlamWrestlingBios/patterson_pat.html|work=Slam! The championship is contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute scripted finishes rather than contend in direct competition. The first champion was Pat Patterson, who won the championship in 1979, while as of February 2011 the champion is Amazing Kong. Amazing Kong is the Second women after Chyna to win the title.
