Changes made in edit

Medri Bahri was a medeival kingdom (part of present day Eritrea and Northern Tigray in Ethiopia) that made part of the greater Kingdom of Abyssinia that existed between 1137 and 1936. The area in Eritrea historically known as Hamasien has for long been the political and economic center of Eritrea, and judging from excavations in the Sembel area outside Asmara it has been so since at least 800 B.C. The capital of the kingdom was situated in Debarwa, now found in the Debub region of Eritrea. It was ruled by a leader distinct from the Ethiopian Negus and was known as the Bahr Negash ('Lord of the Sea'). The Kingdom was also intermittently referred to as Mereb Melash (beyond the River Mereb) by all the other Abyssinian Kingdoms south of the river Mereb, which has since medeival times and to this day constituted a natural border between Eritrea and Ethiopia. After the breakdown of feudal authority in the 17th century, the kingdom of Medri Bahri became a Republic appearing on European maps as 'The Republic of Hamasien'. The laws and customs of this republic lasted until the late 19th century when it succumbed back to the feudal rule of Abyssinian Emperor Yohannes IV and his deputy in the area Ras Alula.
