Therefore, it also becomes voiced - /z/ instead of /s/. It is very common, on Brazilian Portuguese, for people to pronounce a /j/ right before a stressed last syllable that ends on the letter S or Z - like "mês" becomes /mejs/ instead of just /mes/, and that's also true for syllables with the letter I, like "feliz" is often pronounced /fe'li(j)s/.
