'''Rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock''' is an expansion of the classic selection method game ]. It operates on the same basic principle, but includes two additional weapons: the ] (formed by the hand as a sock-puppet-like mouth) and ]<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/leading_article/article1080425.ece |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20100531231332/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/leading_article/article1080425.ece |archivedate=May 31, 2010 |title=... and paper scissors |work=The Times |date=June 11, 2005 |accessdate=2010-11-04}}</ref> (formed by the '']'' ]). This reduces the chances of a round ending in a tie (from 1/3 to 1/5). The game was invented by Sam Kass with Karen Bryla, as "Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard".<ref name=kass>{{cite web |url=http://www.samkass.com/theories/RPSSL.html |title=Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard |publisher=Sam Kass |accessdate=2010-11-04}}</ref>{{npsn|date=April 2014}} |

The game was mentioned in four episodes of '']''. According to an interview with Kass, the series producers did not ask for permission to use the game, but he was later referenced in an episode in the ] for which he thanked them on his website.<ref>{{cite web |title=The True Story behind RPS, Lizard, Spock |url=http://h30565.www3.hp.com/t5/Feature-Articles/The-Real-Story-and-Some-of-the-Math-Behind-the-Famous-Rock-Paper/ba-p/3551 |archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20120519182326/http://h30565.www3.hp.com/t5/Feature-Articles/The-Real-Story-and-Some-of-the-Math-Behind-the-Famous-Rock-Paper/ba-p/3551 |archivedate=May 19, 2012 |accessdate=January 10, 2014}}</ref>{{self-published-inline|date=April 2014}}<ref name=kass/> |

==Rules== |
The rules of rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock are: |
*Scissors cut<!-- Although concerned with a single instance of scissors, dictionaries confirm that 'scissors' is a plural noun so should always carry a plural verb --> paper |
*Paper covers rock |
*Rock crushes lizard |
*Lizard poisons Spock |
*Spock smashes scissors<!-- For source info see Talk: Spock "Smashes" Scissors --> |
*Scissors decapitate<!-- Although concerned with a single instance of scissors, dictionaries confirm that 'scissors' is a plural noun so should always carry a plural verb --> lizard |
*Lizard eats paper |
*Paper disproves Spock |
*Spock vaporizes rock |
*Rock crushes scissors |
There are ten possible pairings of the five gestures; each gesture beats two of the other gestures and is beaten by the remaining two. As with the original rock-paper-scissors game, if two players pick the same gesture, it is a tie. The original rules (rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock) remain the same. |

==Alternate Games== |
Game 1 |
Played by 3 people. One referee and two players. Using the basic rules outlined above two players draw both hands with a sign (Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock) both hands could show the same sign or different. The draw must be within 2-3 seconds(can be longer if agreed upon on all players), which referee would keep the time and some cases break the tie. Minimum 10 draws but can be more if agreed by both players. |
Winner is determined comparing right and left hands of both players. Example game play would be as follows. |
P1(Player One),P2(Player Two), L(left Hand) ,R(Right Hand) |
P1 L Lizard P1 R Paper |
P2 L Spock P2 R Scissors Result (Player One wins on Left hand 1 pts. Player 2 wins on the Right Hand 1pts.) |
If for example P2 draws Rock instead of Scissors the round will be won by P1 2-0. If the sign that player makes is not one of the signs defined by the rules the player automatically loses for that sign. Both players could show the same sign only for one hand. Then both will get 0 points. However for the second hand the referee would decide who made the similar sign first and that person would get the point. |
Requires use of non-dominant hand, fast reaction. Could improve mental agility. |
Game 2 |
Second game is the expansion of the first with an additional rule that the players could not use the same sign for the same hand for the next round. working memory is involved. The referee is required to keep track of the signs. Using a camera would help. If required the rule can be modified so that the players could not the same sign for the same hand from two or more rounds before. This forces players to rely on their working memories. |
