Armstrong was born on February 28, 1995 to Billie Joe and Adrienne Armstrong in Oakland, California. He grew up occasionally on the road with his father, most notably appearing in the documentary for the ] with his dad. They were originally name "The Raining Souls" but later changed it to "The Clocks" in 2008 and finally "Emily's Army" in 2009 to honor a cousin of the Beckers name Emily who had suffered from Cystic Fibrosis. The band recorded their first material in 2008, a demo titled "This Kid.". In 2009 They released an EP and added Guitarist Travis Neumann to the group.
