The '''Hacker Emblem''' was first proposed in ] by ], claiming a need for a uniting and recognizable symbol for his perception of ]. This does not refer to the mainstream media meaning of the word hacker: "being someone who breaks or otherwise circumvents ]", but the positive meaning the word has within the hacking community: beign a person that makes great things with computers, because hackers refer to a criminal who uses computers as a cracker (CRiminal hACKER). Raymond points out that one does not claim to be a ] by displaying this ], but suggests that "by using this emblem, you express sympathy with hackers' goals, hackers' values, and the hacker way of living".

Other means to display the image have evolved, mostly relying on ]. Examples include:

Another version of the emblem has been circulating recently, said to have been created by the hacker ]. The new version takes the form of a sticker, with the embelm above the letters "VIVA". This new emblem expresses an idea similar to supporting the hacker ways and not wanting them to die out, which is becoming more and more of a fear for many as more regulations are placed on the internet by governments, as well as the media's portrayal of the "bad" hacker.
