Born in ], she met her future husband, ], while working as a ballroom singer. The couple married in 1944, and on 12 January 1945, their first child and only daughter, Lesley, was born. Soon, they moved to the ], where their first son, Barry, was born on 1 September 1946. On 22 December 1949, twin boys Robin and Maurice were born. The family later moved back to Manchester. The youngest of the Gibb children, Andy was born on 5 March 1958. Later that same year, the Gibbs immigrated to Australia, where the three oldest sons formed The Bee Gees, which had previously been known as The Rattlesnakes.

Barbara died on 12 August 2016 at age 95 in ], where her family had lived since the 1970s. She outlived her husband, as well as three of her five children -- and the youngest three at that -- Andy (who died in 1988), Maurice (2003), and Robin (2012).
