The Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards is an annual awards show, usually held in April or March, that honors the year's biggest television, movie and music acts, as voted by the children who watch the Nickelodeon cable channel. The show features numerous celebrity guests and musical acts.

History

Alan Goodman, Albie Hecht and Fred Seibert started the awards show as The Big Ballot in 1986, named for the ballots kids voted with from places like Toys "R" Us. In 1987, it was renamed the "Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards". Now, it is possible to vote online at nick.com.

In 1990, the Kids' Choice Awards introduced the now familar orange blimp award. Previously, the Kids' Choice Award was a gold statue shaped to look like a beret wearing child standing up (with his left leg crossed) and holding a long orange stick (with the word Nickelodeon inscribed on it).

The Wannabe Award

The Wannabe Award is a lifetime achievement award that's presented annually at the Kids' Choice Awards. It's called The Wannabe Award because it represents the best celebrity role model or inspiration (or the person for whom the kids want to be like). The Wannabe Award has been awarded since the year 2001 and replaced the Hall of Fame Award, which was first awarded in 1991. The Wannabe Award's color is silver whereas the regular awards are orange.

Unlike other televised awards shows, the Kids' Choice Awards never says how the nominees are determined. Some choices make it hard to believe that "kids" had any say in the matter ; for example, in 2003 and 2004, the only NFL team nominated for favorite sports team was the Miami Dolphins, and in 2006, after years of Tony Hawk winning the favorite male athlete award; no "extreme sports" athletes were even nominated.

The KCA voting method, online polling, allows one to vote "Every time you visit Nick.com". It is possible for someone to vote tens to hundreds of times.

Infamous/Controversial moments

  • In 1999, Britney Spears gave a performance via satellite in Florida, in which she wore a tight-fitting white shirt that clearly gave the impression that she wasn't wearing a bra.
  • In 2001, MTV VJ Carson Daly was voted Favorite TV Actor for his work on Total Request Live. This is in spite of the fact that TRL isn't a scripted program with Daly simply hosting the show instead of playing a character.
  • In 2003, host Rosie O'Donnell (who just a year earlier, publicly disclosed her sexual orientation), issued a statement promising to not air her anti-Iraq War statements during the program. O'Donnell claimed that a lighthearted show like the Kids' Choice Awards wasn't the right place for making a political statement. "Peace is good. War is bad," O'Donnell said. "That's the message I'd like every child to learn." Nickelodeon said a "subtle" message would be acceptable, if O'Donnell decided to deliver it.
  • In 2004, Favorite TV Actress Award winner Raven-Symoné ended her acceptance speech by shouting "Disney rocks!" This was perhaps seen as a reference of superiority from Nickelodeon's rival The Disney Channel (the network that broadcasts Raven-Symoné's show That's So Raven). Others say it could have been a dig at former Disney teen queen Hilary Duff who was also nominated for Disney's Lizzie McGuire. It can also be noted that Chris Brown was announcing the Favorite Sports Athlete next to Avril Lavigne and when announcing the winner tripped over his words and said what sounded like "shit ooh."
  • In 2005, Favorite Music Band winner Green Day was criticized by some who objected to the lyrics and content of their controversial but critically-acclaimed American Idiot.
  • In 2006, Favorite Movie Actress Award winner Lindsay Lohan (who won for Herbie: Fully Loaded) accidentally exposed her bare bottom (the back of her short dress was clinging) as she was walking up on the stage to accept her award.
  • In 2006, Emma Roberts was introduced as the star of the upcoming film Nancy Drew. What should be noted is that the film wouldn't be released until that next year.

The Year Slime Almost Took A Holiday

On the 2006 KCA show, producers were panicking. The show was about to end without any mystery celebrity sliming. Jack Black calmly informed the audience that the show might end without someone being slimed. However, Robin Williams decided to help out the producers and agree to the sliming. Williams was one minute away from the show ending and finally stuck his finger in his nose and screamed, "April Fools!", the Black-accepted codename and was slimed. Producers were overjoyous. Together, with Jack Black and Robin Williams they had saved the KCAs.The sliming even continued during the credits.

  1. The very first Kids' Choice Awards took place in 1988! The host was popular TV star, Tony Danza, and the co-host was '80s Pop Princess, Debbie Gibson, who performed her hits, "Shake Your Love" and "Out of the Blue." What about the green stuff, you ask? The inaugural KCA sliming happened within the first 90 seconds of the show to Les Lye, co-star of the classic Nick show, "You Can't Do That On Television." The first KCA winner ever was Eddie Murphy for Favorite Movie Actor, and the winner for Favorite Movie was his flick, "Beverly Hills Cop 2." The Favorite Movie Actress blimp was awarded to Whoopi Goldberg, Madonna scored Favorite Female Vocalist, and "La Bamba" by Los Lobos was the Favorite Song. Highlights of the night included the Fat Boys performing their hit, "Wipe Out," and Mackenzie Astin from "Facts of Life" taking the Blindfold Ice Cream Challenge...on his face.
  2. The 1989 Kids' Choice Awards was jam-packed with celebs, from hosts Nicole Eggert ("Charles in Charge") and Wil Wheaton ("Stand By Me") to Danica McKellar and Jason Hervey - Winnie Cooper and Wayne Arnold from "The Wonder Years." Alyssa Milano won Favorite TV Actress for the second year in a row, and Favorite TV Actor went to Alf, marking the first time this award was given to a furry alien. Favorite Boy Band New Kids On The Block rocked the house, and singer/actor Corey Feldman showed off his Michael Jackson-like moves. 1988 KCA co-host, Debbie Gibson, scored Favorite Female Singer and Bon Jovi snagged Favorite Male Singer. Slime time came in the last two minutes of the show for actor Bill Kirchenbauer (Coach Lubbock on "Growing Pains") when he said those three magic words, "I don't know."
  3. "Can't touch this." Yes, that's right, in 1990, the Kids' Choice Awards had none other than MC Hammer (baggy pants and all) perform his hit, "Hammer Time"! It was a wild show, with three hosts-David Faustino from "Married With Children," and Candace Cameron and Dave Coulier of "Full House" plus the introduction of the blimps! The very first Kids' Choice Award Blimp went to Favorite Movie Actress winner Leah Thompson. Alyssa Milano won the Favorite TV Actress award for the third year in a row, and Kirk Cameron (co-host Candace's big bro), won for Favorite TV Actor. There was much slime talk throughout the show, but slime time wasn't until the final two minutes, when Dave Coulier and Wil Wheaton (from the big screen flick "Stand By Me") got it good.
  4. KCA 1991 was hosted by Corky Nemec from "Parker Lewis Can't Lose." There were a couple of firsts for the show that year, including the first ever KCA Hall of Fame Special Gold Blimp (see quiz below). And Bart Simpson became the first animated character to accept an award when he represented for Favorite TV Show, "The Simpsons." Will Smith won the Favorite TV Actor Award and cried (well, fake cried) when he accepted his blimp, while Favorite TV Actress went to Keisha Knight Pulliam, otherwise known as Rudy from "The Cosby Show." Arnold Schwarzenegger took home the Favorite Movie Actor blimp for the second time and Julia Roberts scored Favorite Movie Actress honors. The winner for Favorite Movie was "Home Alone," and star Macaulay Culkin accepted the blimp while doing his famous on-screen scream face. During the very last minute of the show, Corky got slimed.
  5. KCA 1992 was a show full of characters. Nick's own wacky duo Ren and Stimpy opened the show, and the cast of "Roundhouse" followed and they danced for an audience energized and ready for anything. Host Holly Robinson came out and further excited the crowd by calling the Kids' Choice Awards "The only awards show where kids rule!" The first presenters, Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green of the mega-popular "Beverly Hills 90210," handed the Favorite Male Actor blimp to Bill Cosby. Later in the show, Lark Voorhies and Dustin "Screech" Diamond from "Saved By the Bell" presented the Favorite Female Athlete award to gymnast Kim Zmeskal. The cast of characters continued on with presenters like Kelly Martin ("Life Goes On"), Joey Lawrence and Jenna Von Oy ("Blossom") and, who could forget, Beethoven the dog. In the last minute, the slime fell...on the audience!
  6. KCA 1994 was packed with primo presenters! Esteemed actor James Earl Jones, a.k.a. the voice of Darth Vader, opened the show and was immediately slimed! After the cast of "Roundhouse" showed off their sweet dance moves, the hosts, Candace Cameron ("Full House") and Joey Lawrence ("Blossom") came out and welcomed the audience. The first award category was Favorite TV Actor and the blimp went to Tim Allen ("Home Improvement"), whose response was, "This is just so cool." Towards the end of the show, Aerosmith scored the Favorite Music Group blimp and Steven Tyler yelped, "This is Nickelodeon! We want to thank you for voting us number one. Yeow!!!" The only famous face wilder than Steven Tyler was Frankenstein, who made an appearance to deliver the Favorite Song blimp to Tag Team for their hit, "Whoop There It Is." All in all, it was an exceptional year for KCA!
  7. From the moment the 1995 Kids' Choice Awards kicked off with the entire audience chanting, "KIDS RULE!" there was no doubt it was going to be a lively show. The one and only Whitney Houston was the host, and Mark Curry ("Hangin' With Mr. Cooper") was her "slime bodyguard." Mark protected Ms. Houston and himself from slime until the last minute of the show, when he got it bad. The first category was Favorite TV Actress and the presenters were LL Cool J and Raven Symone. In a KCA first, Tia and Tamera Mowry both won (for their work on "Sister, Sister")! KCA '95 also marked firsts in other categories, like Favorite Book ("Goosebumps Deep Trouble") and Favorite Video Game (take the quiz to find out the winner!)
  8. The 1996 KCA's was packed full with all kinds of celebs-kids, adults, twins and even Marcel, the monkey from "Friends!" The show opened with dancers, skateboarders and kids singing to the "Ooh Ooh Yeh Kids Choice!" song. The host, who was the1995 KCA host as well, Whitney Houston came out and sang, "I'm Every Woman." Her co-host, Rosie O'Donnell, did her thing from the Kids Choice Hall of Fame Cruise piloted by Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat (a big fan of rhyming). The first award was presented by Taran Noah Smith ("Home Improvement"), Raven Symone and Holly Robinson Peete (both from "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper"). It was the Favorite TV Actress blimp and it went to Tia and Tamera Mowry for the second year in a row for "Sister, Sister." Other presenters included Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five,") Michelle Trachtenberg ("Harriet the Spy,") and Kirsten Dunst ("Jumanji"). The grand slime fell in the last 30 seconds upon the Queen--Queen Latifah that is.
  9. The following all happened before the first commercial break of the 1997 Kids Choice Awards: A Rosie kidnapping, Kel Mitchell rapping, a Cindy Crawford freak-out and the first live Jim Carrey KCA appearance, where he declared, "This means so much to me...so much that I've decided to adopt each and every one of you as my own children!" A constellation of other stars made their first live appearances as well, including Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Patrick Stewart, Chris Farley, Jewel, Fran Drescher, Coolio, Jean-Claude Van Damme on his motorcycle, the cast of "All That," and Wayans brothers Damon, Marlon and Shawn. Madonna even showed up at the end on the live Nickvision screen to set Rosie up for her sliming. As for the blimps...Tim Allen won the Favorite TV Actor award for the fourth year in a row! Pongo the Dog showed up for his Favorite Animal Star win and Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum accepted the Favorite Movie honor on behalf of "Independence Day." It was truly a star-studded affair.
  10. At KCA 1998, serious fan favorites like the films "Clueless" ("Whatever!") and "Titanic" ("I'm king of the world!") scored big, and bands like *NSYNC and Hanson walked away with blimps...AND performed live! Rosie O'Donnell hosted the show again and introduced the Rosie Choice Award (take the quiz and guess who won!). Puff Daddy had the most dramatic entrance as he descended on a rope ladder from the ceiling! Puffy also won Best Dressed, a new category, and took the honorable title of slime victim during the final minute of the show, when he shared the slime love with some lucky audience members (see the photo and send it to a friend!). Other notables: KCA darling, Will Smith, won the Favorite Movie Actor blimp for "Men in Black," Kristi Yamaguchi took home the Favorite Female Athlete title for the third year in a row, and Salem the Cat won Favorite Animal Star again. Meow.
  11. The 1999 Kids' Choice Awards was all about mini-golf. Yes, that's right, mini-golf! The show opened with Michelle Trachtenberg riding in on a golf cart, yelling, "It's time for the KCAs!" Then Rosie, the host, burst though a giant golf bag to welcome everyone. Chris Tucker and Babyface teed off the first award, Favorite Movie Actress. After a ball was putted and sank, the winner was revealed: Drew Barrymore! Other notable holes-in-one: Tara Lipinski was crowned Favorite Female Athlete, Michael Jordan scored the Fave Male Athlete award and the Hall of Fame golden blimp went to Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Game highlights included Britney Spears singing "Baby One More Time," and a TLC performance of "No Scrubs." At the 18th hole, much to the audience's delight, Kenan Thompson and Randy Savage drove a cart through the fairway. Immediately after, Randy and Chilli did not get word of the rain delay and were soaked...with slime, of course!
  12. The first KCA of the millennium opened up with a bang as J. Lo rocked out to "Feelin' So Good" with a slew of dancers, an onstage costume change and a car! Rosie was the host with David Arquette as a kooky co-host for the celebration-themed event. There were several new categories for the new century, like Favorite Movie Couple (take the quiz to find out who won!), Favorite TV Friends (Ben Savage and Rider Strong from "Boy Meets World") and Favorite Rising Star (Mandy Moore). Will Smith won for Best Male Singer and Fave Song ("Wild, Wild West") and brought out his son, Trey, who thanked the audience for listening to all of his Dad's records. Other highlights included then-newlyweds Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's live duet, Adam Sandler asking the audience to say "Hi" to his parents, and, of course, *NSYNC's performance. And it wouldn't have been the celebration of the century...make that millennium...without a serious Will Smith sliming!
  13. As presenter Jessica Simpson said, "There's no better place than outer space." 2001 was the Space year for KCA. There were intergalactic vehicles, alien creatures and, of course, Space Station Slime with a constellation of star victims, including Melissa Joan Hart and *NSYNC. The galaxy's newest Rising Star was Aaron Carter, who got quite a surprise after receiving his blimp. (Take the quiz to find out what!) Destiny's Child performed an out-of-this-world version of their song, "Survivor." And towards the end of the show, Cameron Diaz beat out a solar system of other stars to take home the title of Best Burp. When she won, she exclaimed, "This is one of my proudest moments! I will keep forging forward to give you the best belches I possibly can!" Where else in the entire universe would that happen? Oh, and the final sliming? It was a Mission Hilarious: Tom Cruise.
  14. KCA 2002 was a wild ride! Pink opened the show by running down the aisle with a group of kids and then performing her hit song, "Get The Party Started." And then...there was slime. Lots of it. And it was pink! Host Rosie O'Donnell got the crowd going even more with her chant, "Bigger, louder and messier!" The first award of the night was Favorite Movie and it went to "Rush Hour 2." Chris Tucker and his son represented for the film and accepted the blimp. Later in the show, Mike Meyers and his Mini-Me, Verne Troyer, held umbrellas under the slime shower while the audience didn't stay quite as dry... About half way through the party, Usher rose from the stage to perform his hit song, "U Don't Have To Call," and in the middle of dancing, did a back flip! At the end of the show Dave Mira, AKA "The Miracle Boy," performed a World Record Slime Stunt on his BMX bike and landed in a pool of green goo! All in all, it was an awesome show.
  15. KCA 2003 was a quest to find the Stolen Slime! How did the celebs search for the swiped green goo? Through video games, of course! Jessica Alba and Lil Romeo were the first to take a video game challenge, and though they triumphed over the Spider-Man game, it still wasn't enough to win back the slime. "Charlie's Angels" stars Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu conquered the Super Mario Bros. game, but when they pulled the slime lever they were showered in spaghetti instead. When the stars weren't searching for slime, there were musical performances by Justin Timberlake and B2K, a Burp Award for JT and the Wannabe Award for KCA alum Will Smith. But back to the slime... Tony Hawk rode his skateboard down a ramp and into a pool of the green stuff and Jim Carrey got a super sliming at the end of the show!
  16. "Give me a K! Give me a C! Give me an A!" That's how KCA 2004 began, with cheerleaders...in the form of co-hosts Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz (check out the photos!). It was a rah-rah event indeed: During the show, BMX champion Mat Hoffman clinched a new title and wowed the crowd with a spectacular 14,000-foot World Record Skydiving Bike Jump, landing in a monstrous lake of green slime! Other thrilling moments included Tony Hawk burping with his kids, a major sliming for the Olsen twins, and a Wannabe Award win by funny guy Adam Sandler. At the end of the show the Wheel of Slime was revealed, and when it took its final spin, the arrow landed on none other than co-host Mike Myers. He was covered in it! "Give me an S! L! I! M! E!"
  17. With loud circus music playing and a thick fog hovering, KCA 2005 opened with a larger-than-life image of Will Smith dressed as a big top ring leader. Seconds later, the real Will Smith popped up out of a platform on stage and sang his hit song "Switch," accompanied by 60 dancers and drummers, and one wacky clown. As if that wasn't wild enough, host Ben Stiller rode through the audience in a car, wearing a special suit to protect him from potential slime (take the quiz to find out what kind of suit)! The first award of the night went to Adam Sandler, who accepted his blimp and proceeded to sing a "dog doo" ditty. The show had no shortage of other silly moments: Will Ferrell got slimed, Ben Stiller wore a bear/Rasta costume and claimed he was a rejected "Star Wars" character named Jarwinkula the Rastafarian Space Bear, and let's not forget the final sliming of the evening...Johnny Depp! It was a three ring circus, Nick-style.
