File information
Description

Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita

Photo #NH 63694

Description: This appears to be the photo described on page 74 of Thomas, Evan (2007), Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945, Simon and Schuster, ISBN 9780743252225, which describes it: "A formal portrait of Kurita, taken in 1944, shows a rather severe figure with a shaved head." The book goes on to say that Kurita's daughter, Shigeko Terada, remarked about the photo that Kurita "... was suffering from dengue fever when the photo was taken, and his face had been worn by defeat."
