Chief Bill Gillespie learns that he has been fired by the city council as chief of police. At about the same time, an African American named Hampton Forbes (]), who was a former ] agent from ] is hired by the council to replace Gillespie. Forbes is greeted by Gillespie at the police station, and is told that his chief of detectives Virgil Tibbs is on leave, attending ]. |

For his last case as chief of the ] police, Bill Gillespie investigates the murder of a boy, which was apparently committed by his friend. He learns that the two were playing with a gun when it went off. |

* For the seventh season of ''In the Heat of the Night'', a number of changes had been made to the series. Howard Rollins, who had been playing Virigl Tibbs had been written out of the series due to his continued legal problems. Ann-Marie Johnson, who had played his wife Althea Tibbs had also left the series to join the cast of ]. Tibbs was replaced by Carl Weathers, who made his first appearance as the new police chief Hampton Forbes on this episode. In addition to the cast changes, a newer version of the police uniform was introduced in this episode for the first time. |
