The '''Barai''' are a [[brahmin caste in Hindu religion , they belong to Chaurasia community of India who are the land cultivating caste mainly promoting betel leave farming and selling. Betel leaves are a luxury product and is a part of yaga and pooja done for several purposes. They have various Brahmin gotras like Kashyap, shandilya, atri, bharadwaj and etc. People of this caste use several surnames like bhagat, Chaurasia,Bharadwaj,Rishi, chaurishi, brahmachati, Shankar , tamboli, Modi, Kashyap , Tiwari, pansari, sharma etc.
Barai caste has a long brahminical lineage from Rishi chatursahi from which words Chaurasia arrived from. Some of sub castes also claim descendants from Chandra Vanshi, nag Vanshi as well as Chaurasiya brahmin roots.there are several stories for this caste nai ting their root to their brahminical heritage. Barai usually use surnames like Chaurasiya . Chaurasia mean 84 which indicates 84 different gotta and castes within this community.having the brahminical ancestors, barai people followed several other varna like one of the sub caste is Kashyap Rajput which is Kshatriya caste who chose to stop brahminical lineage and got in warfare for protection of mother land. Due to such changes over time they have 84 sub castes between them. barai have stopped performing brahminical rituals having their ancestral roots to be Brahmin, and and have developed themselves in other activities in history. In 2003, barai caste was listed before high court to be in obc category due to a sect of this community according to their educational standing and social standing and coming ahead in front of govt for their reservatio, anyhow not everyone from this community enjoys obc structure as there are various sub caste like like (Kashyapa) (barai) (chaurasia)(sharma) which are not considered obc as they have fairly good soacial standing and have proven brahminical lineage , becoming one of many brahmin castes getting into obc according to their socially backward and political situation. Barai’s enjoy a good position. They follow Hinduism and different sects have different ideology between them. Some consider Shaivism whereas other consider vaishnavism.
In today’s world, we can normally see many politicians, actors, businessmen and warriors of this community .]] ] found in ], ].<ref name="autogenerated1"> People of India Uttar Pradesh Volume XLII Part One edited by A Hasan & J C Das page 177 to 182 Manohar Publications</ref> <ref>{{Cite book|last=Chaurasia|first=Radhey Shyam|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=cWmsQQ2smXIC|title=History of Ancient India: Earliest Times to 1000 A.D.|date=2002|publisher=Atlantic Publishers & Dist|isbn=978-81-269-0027-5|language=en}}</ref> The people of this community mainly uses "]" as surname (or 'Title').<ref>{{Cite web|date=2019-01-09|title=chaurasia – People Groups of India|url=https://peoplegroupsindia.com/tag/chaurasia/|access-date=2020-11-17|website=People Groups of India|language=en-US}}</ref>
