	For a period of time in the ], when it was a stop on the ], Wayland was called "Cyclone." However, the name was changed, as it deterred potential travelers from staying for fear of experiencing a ].{{Fact\|date=May 2007}} The community has had many names including Cyclone, Newport and Parisville.<ref name=HomeTown> </ref> The town is also the home to the Wayland Community Church. During it's history the little town was home to local landmark such as "The Wayland Mall", which was basically a genral store & home the to previous post office.

	There are two streets in Wayland with distinctive names; Creamery & Basket both named after long gone landmarks. The "Basket" stands for "Basket Factory" which was well known by many as it produced most of the grocery baskets hand woven from lumber strips and transported to many of the stores in NE Ohio. The basket factory shut down with the advent of the modern day grocery bag and it served as a home for the Portage County road dept. for awhile and then later was converted to a home in 1980. It remains on it's original location to this day.

Wayland is an unincorporated community of Paris Township in Portage County, Ohio, United States. It has a post office with the ZIP code 44285. The community is part of the Akron metropolitan area.

It was founded as Newport and was a stop along the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. It was later called Parisville and eventually Cyclone. Because there was some confusion for railroad passengers when the town of Cyclone was announced, townspeople changed the community's name to Wayland in 1900, after Wayland Hoyt, a Baptist minister there at the time.
