Enabling wireless security is a necessity today. 10.1. x.x
192.168. x.x | |||
In most cases either be 10.1.1.1 or 192.168.1.1
Take note of this number.
Step 3. Open your favorite Web browser and enter the number you just wrote down. eg " http://10.1.1.1 " and press Enter.
Step 4. You are prompted to enter a user name and password. Again, this tutorial is for support for netgear router brand and the user name and password by default these are “admin" and "password". If that does not work, try “admin" and “admin" or "admin” and nothing . If that does not work then you may need to talk to whoever set up your router to begin with, because they may have chosen a different password.
Step 5. You should now be in the belly of the beast! There will zillion options in the left menu. Do not be afraid! We are only looking for one in particular - "Wireless Settings”. Click it.
You should now be presented with different options in the window on the right. Again, do not be overwhelmed. We are looking for something very specific. There should be a list of points with a header that says "Security Options”
There are two main options that we should consider for your home network. The first is WEP, which is best used if you have a very old wireless card (5 + years). Otherwise, we should look to use WPA2- PSK. Remember, if you change to a setting that is not compatible with your wireless network card, you may need to connect directly to the router via a cable to change the settings again.
First, if you choose WEP, you have some options . It can generate keys with a passphrase, or simply enter a key in. I find it easier just to enter a key ( in the section entitled "Security Encryption (WEP ) Key " ) . The peculiarity of WEP is that you must use hexadecimal characters. In effect, this means you can use the letters AF ( not case sensitive) and numbers 0-9 . If you select a 64-bit key in level encryption option, you must use 10 characters. If you select 128-bit , you must use 26 characters.
In my honest opinion, it is best to stick to WPA2- PSK. It is much safer and easier than you can establish a normal password and is not limited to hexadecimal characters. Make sure you select WPA2- PSK (AES). Then simply select a password of 8-64 characters.
Step 6. Once you have completed the security settings, scroll to the bottom and click Apply. Your router should reboot now and you have activated the security settings.
Step 7. The last thing to do is make sure your computer ( s ) know of this new password. Go to the center of the control panel, network and sharing, and then click Manage wireless networks. Here you can change the password of the network accordingly.
