In 1981, longtime boss Philip "Benny Squint" Lombardo went into semi-retirement. Vincent "the Chin" Gigante and Santora were the prime candidates to become boss, being two of the most respected and influential members of the family. Lombardo appointed Gigante as boss and Santora as underboss. Santora would continue as underboss of the family until his death in the late 1980's. | |||
