==Storyline== | |||
] tells the boys in a panic that the girls in their class have a list that ranks the boys from cutest to ugliest. The boys become obsessed with finding where each ranks on the list, with the exception of ]. ] lays out a plan to steal the list, called: "Plan Cannot Possibly Fail", which involves kicking the list-keeper in the ]. The plan fails, of course (because "girls do not have balls"), but the boys don't give up, and Cartman comes up with a new plan, called: "Plan Cannot Possibly Fail A Second Time", which succeeds in taking the list. The boys post it on the wall of the boys' bathroom (where the girls can't get it back). Here it is revealed that ] is ranked first (see list below for rest of the boys). Kyle is listed last as the ugliest in the class.
Kyle's spirits plummet as soon as this is discovered and he is teased by Cartman and even Butters. Clyde, on the other hand, has his ego inflated rapidly and he now arrives at school wearing a letterman jacket and saying "hey, what's goin' on?" to random girls. Butters is very happy for not being last, because this means he won't be grounded by his parents, yet again. As for Kyle, several students start to laugh at him for his looks. Unlike Cartman and Butters (who are ranked very low in the list), Clyde does not tease Kyle, berates anyone who does tease him and kindly reassures him that ] was ugly and yet accomplished so much. On Cartman's cruel advice, Kyle begins to hang around the ugly kids in other classes. As Kyle's spirits sink lower and lower, Stan gets increasingly concerned and anxious, and finally asks his ex-girlfriend ] why Kyle was ranked so low. Wendy personally voted Cartman the ugliest and it doesn't seem right to her either, so she takes Stan to the legislative committee of girls who make all the girls' lists. The committee room is filled with pink desks and chairs, flower desk lamps, and pictures of male teen idols (], ], ], ], and two of ]). The girls are reluctant to alter a previous list without cause, but as Wendy investigates further, she discovers that the votes for cutest boy don't add up, and goes to discuss the matter with ], who counted the ballots. Rebecca is defensive of this list and tries to steer Wendy away, but finally warns Wendy severely to drop the subject, or she might discover a secret she "couldn't handle". Wendy and Stan pay a visit to the two committee members to report Rebecca's strange behaviour and how she apparently tampered with the list and eventually discover that the committee members, Rebecca and ] (the leader of the list committee), were involved in a plot: Clyde's father owns a local shoe store, and by fixing the votes on The List to make Clyde popular, the girls could justify dating him and end up getting free shoes. Wendy, horrified that they would abuse their positions, threatens to reveal the truth to the other members. However, the others say they will make a new list for the "biggest liar" and put Wendy at the top of the list, thereby destroying her credibility. They advise her to "just let it go, and keep your little mouth shut." Wendy coldly refuses and attacks the person holding the real list by kicking her in the crotch (referring to a joke earlier in the episode) and manages to steal it from them before fleeing with Stan.
Meanwhile, Kyle plots to ] the school, an idea he gets from an ugly friend called Jamal, when he is visited by the ghost of ], who tries to show him that being ugly is a gift, not a curse. Lincoln takes Kyle to various houses (in a similar manner to the Ghost of Human Kindness in the season 6 episode ]), including Clyde, who has begun to lounge around, chatting with girls on the phone; Lincoln explains that in the process he is becoming a "douche," while ugly kids like Jamal have to work to achieve things and thus build character later in life. Kyle tells Lincoln that he cannot wait that long to be happy and that he is still miserable. Lincoln responds by calling him "a fucking asshole" and driving away in his late 1980s-model ]. Kyle then goes to carry out his plan to burn down the school, when Stan and Wendy show up and tell him that The List is forged. Moments later, ] intervenes, and holds the three at gun point. She admits that Kyle was a "casualty" of their plan, as moving Clyde up the list necessitated moving many other boys down.
Stan and Wendy explain the truth to Kyle, when ] shows up and holds them at gunpoint, while admitting that Kyle was a "casualty" of their plot. However, Wendy has called the police, who arrive almost at once. Bebe is shocked, which Wendy takes advantage of to wrestle the gun from her. A shot goes off; however, neither Wendy nor Bebe are hurt. The bullet flies off, killing ] at home. Bebe is arrested, and the list is burned after Kyle refuses to take a look at the real list, fearing an inflated ego that Abraham Lincoln's ghost warned him about. Wendy admits to Stan that she has enjoyed his company and feels that he has changed a lot since ]. Unfortunately for Wendy, Stan has not quite lost his habit of throwing up out of nervousness and her attempt to kiss him is interrupted when he vomits in her face, but this marks their reconciliation and they resume their romantic relationship.
===Extended ending===
There is an extension to the ending, which has the list being burned, only for a vomit-covered Wendy to reveal that she looked at the list and reveals that Eric Cartman is the ugliest boy. The final scene shows Cartman at lunch having to eat with the ugly kids. Butters is now mocking him. He tries to convince everyone that it doesn't matter and it's what is on the inside that counts—but he then remembers who that is and gets even more depressed.<ref>{{Citation|title="South Park" The List (TV Episode 2007) |work=IMDb|url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1137316/alternateversions|access-date=2021-04-24}}</ref><ref>{{Citation|title=The List Ending- With Original Music|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHsG6383B6I |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211212/tHsG6383B6I| archive-date=2021-12-12 |url-status=live|language=en|access-date=2021-04-24}}{{cbignore}}</ref>

List of episodes |
"The List" is the fourteenth episode and season finale of the eleventh season of the American animated television series South Park, and the 167th episode of the series overall. It first aired on Comedy Central in the United States on November 14, 2007.
In the episode, the fourth grade girls have made a secret list that rates every boy's looks from cutest to ugliest. When the boys steal the list, they are completely unprepared to deal with the results.
Plot
The boys discover that the girls in their class have made a list of them, ordered by cuteness. The boys, after two attempts, eventually succeed in stealing the list and discover it ranks Clyde as the cutest, and Kyle as the ugliest, with Cartman just above him. Kyle's spirits plummet after this discovery, while Clyde's ego inflates dramatically and he starts flirting with many girls at school. He takes pity on Kyle and kindly reassures him that Abraham Lincoln, who was apparently ugly, accomplished so much. Kyle, in an act of depression, starts hanging out with the ugly kids, and gets the idea from a boy named Jamal to burn the school down. He is visited by the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, who shows him that ugliness can be a blessing in disguise; ugly people like Jamal have nothing handed to them and they must earn what they seek and will thus develop character, while beautiful people will have no redeeming character when their looks begin to fade. Kyle decides to go ahead with his plans of arson regardless, citing the long wait he would have to endure in order to realize this blessing, and the hardships and misery he would suffer in the interim.
Meanwhile, Stan watches Kyle's behavior with increasing unease. Eventually, he asks his ex-girlfriend Wendy (who thought that he wasn't going to speak to her again) why Kyle was voted ugliest. Wendy begins investigating and discovers that the ballots were rigged in Clyde's favor: Since Clyde's father owns a shoe store, some of the girls wanted to make Clyde popular to justify dating him and getting free shoes. They hid the real list and forged a new one, meaning that the girls let the boys steal the list. Wendy steals the real list from them and she and Stan run off to find Kyle, who is about to set the school on fire.
Stan and Wendy explain the truth to Kyle, when Bebe shows up and holds them at gunpoint, while admitting that Kyle was a "casualty" of their plot. However, Wendy has called the police, who arrive almost at once. Bebe is shocked, which Wendy takes advantage of to wrestle the gun from her. A shot goes off; however, neither Wendy nor Bebe are hurt. The bullet flies off, killing Kenny at home. Bebe is arrested, and the list is burned after Kyle refuses to take a look at the real list, fearing an inflated ego that Abraham Lincoln's ghost warned him about. Wendy admits to Stan that she has enjoyed his company and feels that he has changed a lot since their breakup. Unfortunately for Wendy, Stan has not quite lost his habit of throwing up out of nervousness and her attempt to kiss him is interrupted when he vomits in her face, but this marks their reconciliation and they resume their romantic relationship.
Extended ending
There is an extension to the ending, which has the list being burned, only for a vomit-covered Wendy to reveal that she looked at the list and reveals that Eric Cartman is the ugliest boy. The final scene shows Cartman at lunch having to eat with the ugly kids. Butters is now mocking him. He tries to convince everyone that it doesn't matter and it's what is on the inside that counts—but he then remembers who that is and gets even more depressed.
Production
"The List" was written and directed by series co-founder Trey Parker, and was rated TV-MA L in the United States. It first aired on November 14, 2007 in the United States on Comedy Central. Shortly after "The List" was originally broadcast, T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts based on the episode were made available at South Park Studios, the official South Park website. The shirt design featured a hip-looking Clyde wearing his letterman jacket. When Kenny gets shot, the pop tarts come out of the toaster, a reference to where Butch kills Vincent and the toaster pastries come out of the toaster in Pulp Fiction.
