Ula can also employ the help of a dog shaped drone to survive a hit from the ghosts. After which the drone takes time to recharge.
== Difficulty ==
Beating levels at higher difficulties gives you extra flavour text in the form of a "gallery" option in the main menu after beating the game.

Difficulty is separated into three modes: EASY, STANDARD and HARD.

EASY
Generators do not ], and the drone is recharged after 4 seconds.
(The number 99 is shown next to each generator in place of a countdown)

STANDARD
Generators explode after 40 seconds, and the drone is recharged after 10 seconds.

HARD
Generators explode after 30 seconds, and the drone is removed.

==Gallery==
The gallery is unlocked after completing level 13.
It contains some backstory for the characters and notes from the creater.
There are 27 gallery panels in total, with panels 6-27 acting as rewards for beating hard mode levels.

Panel 1 shows 3 versions of the game dated 2022-2024
"Hello! Thsnks for playing Awaria. My previous game, Helltaker, basically made itself. It filled me with a false belief that game development is easy, and I can effortlessly create anything I want. Awaria was the opposite. This game didn't want to be made, and it fought against me every step of the way. I see now that I still have a lot to learn."

Panel 2 has drawings of ghost girls in suits
"For a long time, I couldn't decide on the setting. Since I automatically gravitate towards my comfort zone of girls in sharp suits, my favorite option was noir. Adventures of G.G. Ghostcatcher, exorcist for hire. However, as the core gameplay started to take shape, I realized that the noir setting did't fit in the slightest."

Panel 3 has drawings of tunnel runners in yellow maintenance gear
"The design of common Awaria suits was supposed to imitate bees. I had this idea of a hive of tunnels maintained by drovse of poor, expendible worker bees. Later on, I ditched the idea of yellow clothers to create a clear contrast in brightness between teh physical (dark purple) and the paranormal (bright green)."

Panel 4 has portraits of Zmora with dark purple clothing
"I clung to the idea of ghosts wearing physical clothes for as long as I could. Ultimately, it didn't survive in gameplay. I needed clear silhouettes for enemies, and that required uniform brightness. I miss those high contrast bright glowing tears in the bodysuits though..."

Panel 5 has drawings of Yaga, Ula and the ghosts with their names under them
"Are ghosts still a thign in 2024? They were prety cool in the ancient past of 2021. How can such a tiny game take so long to make? In retrospect, maybe I should have released the game in 2023 with only Zmora in it and add new levels as free updates. Locking myself in a room for 3 years was not the best of my ideas."

'''After beating 4 hard mode levels, Panels 6–8 are unlocked.'''

Panel 6 has sketches of Ula Usterka and her drone

"When the higher-ups want you gone, they exile you to work in the tunnels. Ula Usterka is a rare example of a tunnel runner volunteer who joined the maintenance crew to reunite with her undead friend. Her drone does not appear in the cutscenes because of hard mode and because I'm too lazy to draw it."

Panel 7 has sketches of Zofia Zmora

"Zofia Zmora died from electrocution on her first day in the tunnels and came back as a Shocker-type ghost. Not much to say about this one. She's just a very mean ghost with glasses. Back when she was supposed to be the only ghost in the game, her element was going to be fire, and she summoned minions. Other ghosts ended up inheriting her original abilities."

Panel 8 has a portrait of Zofia and Ula mid-possession

"After the events of the game, Zmora and Usterka became a famous duo, often teaming up against powerful wraiths. Ghosts feed on human emotions like anger and pain, but they can feed on love as well. Unfortunately, only the most obnoxious people tend to come back as ghosts, and undeath does not make them any more likeable."

'''After beating 8 hard mode levels, Panels 9–11 are unlocked.'''

Panel 9 has sketches of the Cutwire twins

"Caroline Cutwire was cut in half by automatic doors, and now, somehow, she's shorter, and there are two of her. I wanted to give Cutwire a projectile that would slowly follow behind the player, but I couldn't figure out how it was supposed to look. Until I realized I could just turn the projectile into another ghost."

Panel 10 has sketches of Nikita the smelter

"Nikita Naprava... I had her design and gameplay figured out... but I had no idea what her personality was supposed to be. I've tested the violent brute and the insolent punk. The current version is more of a crazy motherly type. However, since it was a last-minute decision, her character is not explored well in the game."

Panel 11 has a picture of Nikita and the Cutwire twins playing cards

"To this day, Nikita and the Cutwire twins relentlessly haunt sector F, regularly coming up with new strategies to catch Usterka. When the shields are up, they chill in the lower tunnels playing Macau. Cutwires are notorious cheaters and take immense pleasure from bullying their colegue"
<!--the misspelling of colleague is how it was written-->

'''After beating 12 hard mode levels, panels 12-14 are unlocked.'''

Panel 12 has sketches of Baba Yaga and Wraithtaker

"Yaga woke up one day with a dream. Harem full of ghost girls. It was a glorious success at first, but after 20 years, her dream had gone sour. The legends say her Sector A harem consists of all the most dangerous Ultra tier ghosts that no other tunnel runner can deal with. Initially, she was going to be a huge, muscular guy called Wraithtaker"

Panel 13 has sketches of docter Striga

"Docter Sylvia Strzyga died from failure of her artificial heart and became a rare Scrapper-type ghost. I wanted her to look horrifying and intimidating compared to the cute girls you faced so far, but I messed it up. I should have made her way more grotesque. I'm sure she looks VERY scary when using her full power - we just never got to see it in the game."
<!--I assume the name is supposed to be Sylvia Striga, but I can't be sure.-->

Panel 14 has a drawing of Yaga and Striga

"Yaga and Striga eventually made up (temporarily) over their shared passion for denaturat. In case it's not clear: You should NOT drink denatured alcohol. Even one glass can result in permanent blindness or death. Yaga is a fictional character and has an illegal artificial liver transplant anyway, and Striga is already dead."

'''After beating 13 hard mode levels, Panels 15–27 are unlocked.'''

Panels 15-27 are the recipe for the Ulas pudding pies, so sections will not be titled

Panel 15 "This is Tunnel Runner's Cooking Show. I'm Jagoda Jęczyduch, though you might know me as Baba Yaga from sector A. I have with me Ula Usterka from sector F. She'll show us how she makes her signature pudding pies"

Panel 16 "For the pie dough, we will need around 250g of flour, 60g of powdered sugar, 125g of butter, and 3 eggs. Shout-out to Ula's mom, who generously stole all this from the luxurious pantry of queen bitch Albina Awaria herself."

Panel 17 "First, we need to separate the egg yolks from the whites. This recipe does not need egg white for anything, so we will store it in the fridge and use it when making scrambled eggs for breakfast the next day."

Panel 18 "We combine the ingredients in a bowl and make the dough by hand. If you read "Cooking with Helltaker Vol. 2 Apple Pie", you are already more than familiar with the process of making pie dough."

Panel 19 "After you're done, you can throw the dough at your local Splitter-type ghost. They won't be able to resist the need to cut it in half. Both halves are going to rest in the fridge while we work on the pudding."

Panel 20 "We will need 2 eggs (once again, only their yolks), 200 ml of milk, 25g of butter 15g of vanilla sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, and 1 tablespoon of potato starch. I wonder how much Ula's mom would charge me for a cheap bottle of honey liquor."

Panel 21 "1/3 of the milk we will mix in a glass with flour, starch and egg yolks. To prevent flour from forming into lumps, stir it with the heavy-duty pneumatic power drill available in every sector (or with a simple fork). In the meantime, cook the remaining 2/3 of the milk with vanilla sugar."

Panel 22 "Once the sugar has melted, we can just add in the flour mix we prepared. Lastly, we add the butter. Keep on the heat and stir all the time. Just make sure you don't drill through the pot. We are done once the butter melts and the pudding gets thick. Let it cool for now."

Panel 23 "Next, we need to roll the dough. It's what I would have said if we didn't have this convenient hydraulic press available in every sector. The first half of the dough will form the bottom of the pies, while the second half will be used to close them from the top."

Panel 24 "We can use an empty glass to cut out the same amount of dough every time. Then we press the dough into the tart molds. Depending on the size and depth of your molds, you may end up with anything between 10 to 20 pies."

Panel 25 "Next, we fill the pies with spoonfuls of pudding, and close them with dough. Push your thumb on the edges to seal them and remove all the excess dough. You will end up with lots of leftover dough after this part - combine it together and make additional pies if you still have pudding to spare."

Panel 26 "Now we can put them in a 180-degree oven for 25 minutes or employ a Smelter-type ghost to bake them pyrokinetically. Just keep in mind that they tend to overbake stuff. Stop them before the pies start to get visibly darker at the edges."

Panel 27 "Pies will crumble if you try to take them out of their molds immediatly after baking. Instead, give them some time to cool down and harden. This Was Tunnel Runner's Cooking Show. Join us next time, and I'll teach you how to extract alcohol from generator fuel with a loaf of bread."

Awaria is a 2024 bullet hell indie video game by Łukasz “Vanripper” Piskorz.

Gameplay

One of the levels of Awaria. The player controls Ula (the purple figure, bottom center), in order to evade the green ghosts and their attacks.

The player controls a mechanic, Ula, who runs through the game's small top-down levels attempting to fix broken machines, while evading the attacks of increasingly aggressive ghost girls.

Depending on the difficulty level, getting hit by a ghost's attack leads to a game over. If Ula manages to evade the ghosts and fix the machines, she can kiss the ghosts as a reward for beating each level.

Development

Awaria is a stylistic follow-up to Piskorz's 2020 game Helltaker, though it is thematically and mechanically different. "Awaria" means "mechanical breakdown" or "failure" in Polish.

The soundtrack is composed by Mittsies, who had also scored Helltaker. The sound design is by Patryk Karwat.

Piskorz distributes Awaria for free over Steam and itch.io for Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

Reception

Like Helltaker, Awaria was well received by players, with 96% of Steam reviews positive following its release.
