The film is a loose retelling of the life of pop superstar Britney Spears. It starts from the beginning of her career not including ]. It also goes into her relationship with ]. The film also covers her marriage to ], her downward spiral and ends with her performing at her residency in ]. The film did not use any of Spears' songs, due to the singer and her team not consenting to the film's production.
Britney is doing a documentary in 2008 about her life and states that she only wants to be loved . Flashback to 1998 florida where she first goes on tour with N'sync. There her parents starts fighting. She meets with ] and eventually the two talk reminiscing about ] and talking about how Britney's parents are having money trouble due to getting her career started, during Britney's birthday party. The two end up having sex on the tour bus. After this they end up in a relationship. At Britney's Beach house the house gets broken into while they are at the beach they steal several items including a sex tape. The belongings eventually get returned and Britney's parents are seen fighting again. Justin comforts Britney during this difficult time. Britney gets a new choreographer, Wade to help with her iconic VMA snake performance and Justin appears to be getting jealous but let's it go after Britney assures him it is nothing. At the club Britney gets jealous of a girl talking to Justin and the two end up getting into a fight. Britney then goes to Wade and talks to him about the fight. At SNL while Britney and Justin are to perform their together, Justin finds a card from Wade suggesting they may have had sex allegedly. He ends up breaking up with Britney for good after this. At some point they are at a club and there is some sort of a dance-off between the two it is super cringe. Britney performs at the VMA in hopes to show off to Justin but he is now with ]. Britney then gets married to the guy from her old high school in Vegas but the marriage gets annulled. This begins the downward spiral. She finds out that her parents are getting a divorce and goes into a deeper depression. She soon meets with ] and they have a super tumultuous toxic love affair. She fires her manager since she thinks he is controlling her too much after Kevin and her get married. They end up having two boys together. Britney catches him cheating at the club and gets a divorced and rehires Larry. She eventually becomes into even more of a downward spiral shaves her head and hits the car with an umbrella. She threatens her mom with a lawsuit while on the set of Zoey 101. Shortly after she meets Sam Levy the creep who tried to be her manager. He is controlling her and doesn't let her see anyone without him knowing. She performs at the VMA in 2007 and after watching herself on stage and hearing Justin wishing her luck she has a mental breakdown. At some point she goes to a photoshoot and rubs food on her dress and let's her dog shit on the floor and refuses to let the makeup lady touch her. She leaves with the dress and refuses to continue the shoot. After finally getting out of Sam's care after her mom sees how deep in a depression she is. She finally seeks some help and is put under a conservative controlled by her dad. We then flashforward her to her performing at her residency in Vegas and the movie closes out.

It also goes into her relationship with Justin Timberlake. The film also covers her marriage to Kevin Federline, her downward spiral and ends with her performing at her residency in Las Vegas. The film did not use any of Spears' songs, due to the singer and her team not consenting to the film's production.

The film was critically panned upon release. One writer for NME called the film a "car crash" and criticized it for its numerous inaccuracies and choice of casting. Billboard criticized the film for having "too many pieces missing." The Guardian gave a more mixed review of the film, calling it "tacky, but oddly compelling."

The film was watched by 1.01 million viewers and held a 0.4 rating among viewers 18–49.
