An IP has commented at ] on the fact that immigration isn't mentioned, and with the rich culture of carnival, synagogues, Irish club, etc it does seem surprising that we don't seem to have anything about the centuries of immigration into Leeds. There are plenty of ] though perhaps mostly print rather than online: looking at the under "I" for Irish showed another publication about Italians in Leeds, just as a sample. I'm away from my Leeds bookshelf at the moment but I'm sure there's scope to add a section, or a new article, or a historical expansion to ]. (If, on the other hand, this information is already in the encyclopedia, then it needs more links to make it visible - nothing in the "Leeds" template suggests where to find it, and ] could use a short section with a {{tl|main}} link.) ]] 09:20, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

== Pevsner for Goole? Architect W.?.Moffat? ==
==Discussion at ]==
]&nbsp;You are invited to join the discussion at ]. — ] (]) 22:58, 15 March 2020 (UTC)<!-- ] -->

In an unsourced update to ], {{ping|Wikijohnword}} said the architects were "] and ]". agrees. Hurst has since been amended to ], a red link. I thought I'd found our man Moffat as ] (right initial, plausible dates, worked with George Gilbert Scott), but ... the shows the church as by William Hurst and William Lambie Moffatt/Moffat. The Friends of Doncaster Mansion House have a page "" about an architect born 1787, which says that in 1838 he "entered into partnership with a Scotsman, William Lambie Moffatt. This period has less local interest as much of the practice’s work involved churches and public buildings elsewhere."
== Monthly collaboration suggestion: Lendal Tower ==

Has anyone got a copy of Pevsner covering Goole which might have something to say, or any other information about our redlinked architects here?
I created the article on ] about a year ago and think it has the potential to become a higher quality article than it is now (start-class). The sources I’ve already referenced contain a lot more information and if other editors read these they'll probably find things worth adding that I’ve missed (particularly to do with the architecture as I'm not great with the terminology and technical stuff), also they may be able to make improvements relating to grammar and Manual of Style guidelines. ] (]) 00:49, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
:Thanks for the suggestion, I will use for May as I have already got the April ones selected. Though there does not appear to be much activity on some of the selected articles, may be the members are not active or are doing other things. ] (]) 14:10, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

] isn't redlinked anywhere but shows up in a search as architect of six buildings which have articles, and another when he's spelled with just the one "t" as "Moffat".

Ahah: just found which credits Moffatt with the church at Goole! So NHLE and the church archives have got it wrong? All a puzzle. There's another bio of him which identifies a lot of his workhouses, hospitals and schools but unfortunately doesn't identify his churches! ]] 15:24, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

== Notable People (]) ==

{{ref-talk}}
Hi there, coming out of retirement trying to tackle this article as it's my hometown, going to make an attempt to bring it up to at least a "C" class using the ] settlement guidelines, so I may ask for help on more than one occasion. Firstly, the list of notable people seems quite messy and exhaustive here when compared to somewhere larger like ]? I'm not sure where the guidelines sit really, if they have a Misplaced Pages article of their own, do they warrant making it onto a list of people from the town, or do we select the most notable few? Your help and guidance would be much appreciated, take care all. ] 07:21, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
:Hi {{u|Cacolantern}}; given the size of the notable people, have you considered spinning it off into a separate list like ]? If they are retained, then I would expect all to be cited as having that connection to Richmond. At least all have blue links, so their inclusion is warranted, but a list like this can be quite bloated. The crux, as you say, is who to include, as which is more notable, a rugby player over a headmaster? Regards. ] (]) 08:20, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
::I have added several ODNB cites. ] (]) 09:12, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
::: Thank you for the help {{u|The joy of all things}}, I may just do that, I think that's a sensible option, will probably get round to it after some other sections, thank you as well for the cites. ] 09:35, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
::::No worries; as it happens I have a couple of Richmond-style articles in the works, and I spent a good deal of last week improving ]. ] (]) 09:39, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
:::::I would probably get the list in to shape here first and then spin off as one of the last operations on the page. There needs to be work on the ODNB references several have the link on the accessdate and several have no date information whatsoever. The last one also appears to be a dead DOI link. ] (]) 13:11, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
::::::{{u|Keith D}}, {{u|Cacolantern}} - half way there! I have sorted the Born in Richmond section, will look at the next section tomorrow. Regards. ] (]) 20:58, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
:::::::{{u|The joy of all things}} Thanks. Can you add the dates while you are doing this, needs the publication (modified) date and probably accessdate. ] (]) 21:04, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
::::::::{{u|Keith D}} The date and accessdate are no longer parameters of the ]. I did ask the custodian/admin/template guru who had effected the changes back in 2019 (I think), and their response as to why the url/date/accessdate parameters are not required is ]. ] (]) 05:57, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
:::::::::{{u|The joy of all things}} The template has all the parameters of {{tl|cite encyclopedia}}. There is nothing in the link to say that {{para|date}} is not required. I would say the date is required as the ODNB gets updated periodically and so may not support the text any more. ] (]) 10:16, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
::::::::::{{u|Keith D}}, okay, I have inputted all the dates into the cites that I appended yesterday. If accessdates are needed, then you will need to confirm this, please. I am going to take a look at the previous cites that have some dead doi links and update. Regards. ] (]) 11:00, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
{{od}} Right, I think I have sorted it (dates and everything). There are a couple (like Hounsfield) who I cannot find reliable sources for, though. ] (]) 14:39, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

== ] Review ==

Hello folks, On 16 March it's 50 years since the ], which was held in Leeds! As part of the celebrations, I'm supporting a short, fast (!) introduction to editing at Leeds City Museum (). There's a much wider programme also for those interested ] (]) 08:36, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello again! I think I've got as far as I'm going to get in the meantime with the Richmond article, the history section has barely been touched by myself as I'm struggling to find any 20th century events, but if anyone else fancies a go then of course, go ahead! Notable people looks great, but I didn't want to do anything drastic like split it until we had a clear consensus!
I'd appreciate an independent mind to review and re-classify the article now if that's okay? Hpefully it's climed out of "start" class.
I will continue working on it when I gather more notable information and reliable sources.

== Weekly clean-up listing ==

Hello all; the Tuesday run of the cleanupworklistbot has generated an extra 62 articles this week with the tags of ''Harv and SFN no-target errors''. I did see this sometime last year when a test was run to see what it was like and it threw up lots of issues. I think the problem lies when either some has written a cite starting with <nowiki>{{sfn|...|...|...}}</nowiki> and then not had a link in the ref section (such as at ], where it displays the Patent Rolls with an SFN citation, but nothing in the sources or bibliography), or, when a source has more than one author and needs it ref parameter changed from <nowiki>|ref=harv}}</nowiki> to show <nowiki>|ref= {{harvid|author1 surname|author2 surname|year}} }}</nowiki>.

Is this correct, or am I just muddying the waters. Thanks and regards. PS - 26% of the articles linked to Yorkshire have some sort of problem that needs attention, if we muck in, we can sort a lot of them! Thanks. ] (]) 18:38, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
:Probably the second one of multiple authors may be because the author parameter is set out wrong and not using {{para|last}} and {{para|last2}}. Another problem could be the year in the short form & long form do not match each other.

== To-do list for new articles? == == Collaborations of the month July 2024 ==

Hi,

I've recently got back into contributing to Misplaced Pages and I'm looking to help out with Sheffield-related articles as that's where my knowledge is.

Is there a to-do list of Sheffield/Yorkshire pages to be created? I was going to ask on the WikiProject Sheffield Talk page but that doesn't seem to be used any more (last post was 9 years ago!). I've been tidying up a few Sheffield articles up to now but keen to have my own 'project' as well :)

Thanks!

] (]) 14:50, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
:Not specifically Sheffield but there are some in ] in the "Article requests" list. Depends on members adding them then they think an article is needed or they see a red-link in an article. ] (]) 23:29, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

== Eyes on requested ==

For the last few weeks I have been trying to assist a determined Paid CoI who registered two days before (with a sizeable deletion of sourced prose) to an article based on a business, ].

At my request, a CoI declaration was made, confirming that the business had contracted ''Chelgate Local'', a subsidiary of ] to ]

After considerable Talk discussion, this new editor has submitted a revised proposed change at ] under two new subheadings. As I am the only contributor to Talk, I am requesting comments to form a consensus, and also to avoid any suggestions of ]ership on my part. Until seeing this CoI contribution, I had only edited a caption, and this is my first experience of a paid contributor.

One aspect includes the development of a free App for Android and iOS; I have no experience of such software hence unable to conclude if this constitutes ].

Thank you.--] (]) 21:56, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

== Whitesnake ==

Hello, the ] article was tagged for the project some time ago and has recently been nominated for good article status. The article at one stage had references to ] but there are no references to Yorkshire any more. Is there something missing from the article, as it now stands, or was the previous mentions of Middlesbrough incorrect? Anyone got any insight on this? ] (]) 18:39, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
:David Coverdale was/is from Saltburn and did early gigs on Teesside. That's it. It's as pointless as stating that Queen are from Zanzibar because Freddie Mercury was born and brought up there. I would expect the article on David Coverdale to be tagged for Yorkshire, but not the one about Whitesnake, who formed in London. Another example; three of the current members of Marillion are from Yorkshire: the Boro, Whitby and Donny, but they formed in Aylesbury, so again, I would not expect the Marillion article to have a Yorkshire tag. Obviously that's my opinion and it's not rooted in policy (I don't think it is at any rate). Regards. ] (]) 21:21, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

I think the newsletter is helpful and a good reminder to keep up to date with things, but I find it can notably increase the size of my talk page. ::Thanks, I received the message and it was about a tenth of the size of the full version. Great work on coming up with a solution so quickly, if I'd kept my talk page a bit more organised I may have thought to ask about it a bit earlier. I've had a go of trying to create a version of the message that has been simplified down a little further:

::As my understanding of how to put this together was mostly by trial and error there may be areas that could be improved on either technically or in terms of the appearance. It contains all the information from the original message (once the MediaWiki delivery notice has been added to the end) but I removed the top section to make it non-collapsible as I think this would no longer be necessary. As with the original message it is only the issue number and date that would need to be updated. ] (]) 18:22, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

== User script to detect unreliable sources ==

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to ] and ]s. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the ]. The idea is that it takes something like
*John Smith "" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14. (<code><nowiki>John Smith "" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.</nowiki></code>)
and turns it into something like
* John Smith "{{highlight||pink}}" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{tl|cite web}}, {{tl|cite journal}} and {{tl|doi}}.

The script is mostly based on ], ] and ] and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is '''not a script to be mindlessly used''', and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at ]. Questions, comments and requests can be made at ].

== Event at Leeds City Museum ==

Hello all! Just a quick note to say that the team at Leeds City Museum are running a to which existing editors are totally welcome too! ] (]) 15:31, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
: Hi Lucia,, I've only just seen this. If you are planning any more of these, I'd love to come and help out, if you think I could be useful? Please let me know on my talk page, though, because I might miss this page (too much on the watchlist). The major problem that my non-wiki friends have - for some reason - is uploading their images to Commons. They all seem to give up due to "time, effort and hassle", and that includes people profient in IT. Their main complaint seems to be that the upload wizard fails at some point. So that is something that I could help them with. (there's nothing wrong with Commons or the upload wizard - people just don't seem to know exactly what info to feed it with). We do need more pictures of Yorks locations, people, etc. ] (]) 14:51, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

== Wikidata queries to identify potential articles ==

Hello, I’ve joined this group as a denizen of Yorkshire trying to improve my Wikimedia skills.

Using the Wikidata query service I’ve run a few queries to list various Yorkshire entities and corresponding Misplaced Pages URLs where they exist. Not sure how useful people will find it, but here they are:

Rivers: https://w.wiki/6BNb

Castles: https://w.wiki/6BNZ

Churches: https://w.wiki/6BNg

Lakes: https://w.wiki/6BNr

Market towns: https://w.wiki/6BNe

N.B. Results are only as good as the data in Wikidata. For instance, there are limited results for ‘Market towns’ because the records lack the relevant property, which I’ll start adding (Edit: thanks to {{reply to|Tagishsimon}} who used Petscan to identify market towns and batch add the relevant property.)

==Proposed Merge==
== Project-independent quality assessments ==
] It has been suggested that the article ], be merged into ]. You're invited to ]. -- ]-'']'' -- 07:45, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

Quality assessments by Misplaced Pages editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at ], but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent ] was approved and has been implemented to add a {{para|class}} parameter to {{tl|WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{tl|WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

== Requested move at ] ==
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{tl|WPBannerMeta}} a new {{para|QUALITY_CRITERIA|custom}} parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. ] (]) 22:43, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

At ] we are discussing the collage images for that article's infobox. One of the suggestions has been to use the image to the right. Thematically it is on point, but photographically it could be better, so if there is anyone local who could get a (or anyone who knows of a suitably licensed) higher quality image from approximately that angle that would be very useful. * Removing the mention of the former district in the lead.
* Removing the district field from the infobox.
* Updating any other mention of the district in the body.

If you can also update the at the same time that would be helpful.

Cheers, ] (]) 09:35, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Pevsner for Goole? Architect W.?.Moffat?

In an unsourced update to St John's Church, Goole, @Wikijohnword: said the architects were "William Hurst and W. B. Moffat". NHLE agrees. Hurst has since been amended to William Hurst (architect), a red link. I thought I'd found our man Moffat as William Bonython Moffatt (right initial, plausible dates, worked with George Gilbert Scott), but ... the Dictionary of Scottish Architects shows the church as by William Hurst and William Lambie Moffatt/Moffat. The Friends of Doncaster Mansion House have a page "Doncaster Architects: William Hurst" about an architect born 1787, which says that in 1838 he "entered into partnership with a Scotsman, William Lambie Moffatt. This period has less local interest as much of the practice’s work involved churches and public buildings elsewhere."

Has anyone got a copy of Pevsner covering Goole which might have something to say, or any other information about our redlinked architects here?

William Lambie Moffatt isn't redlinked anywhere but shows up in a search as architect of six buildings which have articles, and another when he's spelled with just the one "t" as "Moffat".

Ahah: just found this which credits Moffatt with the church at Goole! So NHLE and the church archives have got it wrong? All a puzzle. There's another bio of him here which identifies a lot of his workhouses, hospitals and schools but unfortunately doesn't identify his churches! PamD 15:24, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Apologies for the lack of source material, this was largely taken from newspaper archives of Goole Times giving a history of the church throughout the years, particularly that from 25 years ago commemorating the 150th anniversary of the church. Wikijohnword (talk) 15:31, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
"The church, which was built by Messrs. Hurst and Moffatt, of Doncaster" according to the Leeds Intelligencer - Saturday 29 April 1848 Page 8. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000193/18480429/049/0008 May be useful for consecration detail. Keith D (talk) 20:26, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
...and Pevsner states that the church was " built by the Aire and Calder Navigation company 1843-8. The architects were William Hurst and W. B. Moffat." Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 20:45, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
