The Peoples Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) were not the same... the map gives the impression that either communist China did not exist (it did) or that the Republic of China had (filtered) over the mainland (it did not).

I can see from the map that it is not very reflective of the time period in general... I think the whole map could be vastly improved. — Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 03:17, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

::This map is absolutely awful. It's neither a current map nor a 1948 map. The countries in the Caucasus are already there for some reason, but not those in Central Asia or the Baltics, even though all of them were part of the Soviet Union. How is Yugoslavia divided in six? What's up with Africa? But Czechoslovakia is there though.
::However, China is not a problem. The vote was on 10 December 1948, and the PRC was only proclaimed on 1 October 1949. So China simply includes both the Mainland and Taiwan at that time. ] (]) 19:34, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

Hmm... It seems someone has inserted this exact same unsourced sentence - or close enough - across a range of articles. I've just come from writing a lengthy Talk page post here: https://en.wikipedia.org/Talk:Declaration_of_the_Rights_of_Man_and_of_the_Citizen#Proposal:_reference_to_the_UN_Universal_Declaration_of_Human_Rights_be_removed_from_the_lede

I'll just quote the summary of the most pertinent part here: "In short, Humphrey and his top aide, ], came up with a list of "forty-eight items" that represented, in their view, "the common core" of the intellectual history of human rights they had collected, to be presented to the drafting committee, containing British, French, American, Swedish, Norwegian, Soviet, Chilean, Panamanian and Mexican documents and proposals - all with 400 pages commentary." (Humphrey: A Great Adventure, pp. 31 f. See UN document E/CN.4/AC.1/3/June 4, 1947, ‘Draft Outline of International Bill of Rights.’)
the map that describes what each country in the UN voted for uses modern borders - for example, the borders of Germany are modern and not divided, Jugoslavia does not exist, and Ukraine is present on the map despite being part of the Soviet Union. Should this be corrected? ] (]) 22:41, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
I propose removing this unsourced sentenced and making significant additions. (Seems like these articles are gonna need a lot of work...) - ] (]) 13:28, 4 November 2021 (UTC) |
