== Requested move, over redirect ==

Please move ] to ].

I'd do it myself, but there's a redirect in the way.

Somebody deleted it by redirect, rather than move it back to draft space. Looking around Misplaced Pages at the subject, there appears to plenty of Kennedy-related articles to justify an outline. It just ain't ready for prime time yet. For example, in the titles held section, it doesn't identify who held each title. Definitely still a draft.

Hello Pbsouthwood
I’m facing an issue with my Misplaced Pages page, Prisca Abah. It’s currently up for deletion, and I’d like to understand why and what I can do to address it. I’m surprised to find my long-standing Misplaced Pages page flagged for deletion because of alleged promotional content. I had no idea anything promotional was added. Could you point out the problematic sections so I can revise or remove them to align with Misplaced Pages’s policies? Archives for lengthy talk pages

Archiving is used on talk and project pages (never on articles) to keep them from getting too long to be useful, while retaining older discussions in case somebody should need to refer to them.

The preferred method for archiving a talk page is to copy the older content to a series of subpages. This can be performed either by hand or automatically by a bot.

Actually I don't. I just know that there is probably a help page on a topic, type in what seems a likely shortcut or page title, and if that doesn't work, do a quick search. Also useful is to go to any help page and look in the Template:Misplaced Pages help pages navbox for the topic I need. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 05:10, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Question regarding how to conduct a dispute

In conducting a dispute on another editor's contribution, is it appropriate to first revert the contribution/remove the content and then begin a talk to get consensus to restore it? Or is it correct to instead tag the content in the article as disputed and then begun a dispute in the article's talk page to get consensus to remove it? I have gotten conflicting answers to this when consulting the relevant articles (WP:TALKDONTREVERT, WP:STONEWALLING seem to support the latter) and asking others on the topic (who seem to support the former) and would appreciate your insight! Sxbbetyy (talk) 17:31, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

It depends on the disputed material. If it is a breach of copyright or contravenes the requirements for biographies of living people, it must be removed immediately, with an appropriate edit summary. If it is a dispute of factual accuracy, it depends on the strength and reliability of the sources. When the change is strongly supported by a reliable source, it is usually appropriate to make the change without prior discussion, provide the reference with it, and leave a suitable edit summary. Also, an unsourced claim may be removed without prior discussion if there is plausible reason to believe that it is inaccurate (you must be able to explain your reasoning if challenged). Where the dispute is on interpretation or there are conflicting sources of equivalent reliability, the change should be discussed first. Tagging the disputed content and opening a discussion on the talk page is seldom wrong when you have any doubt. Personal opinions of editors carry no decisive weight on Misplaced Pages, even if they claim to be an authority, but they should not be dismissed arbitrarily - they may be right. Evidence is required to settle content disputes. When in doubt, ask someone for an independent opinion, but in those cases it is usually helpful to provide links and diffs so they can read up on the background of the specific dispute, as best practice varies depending on the circumstances. Disputes over relevance, neutrality and weight are usually best discussed first, as these are often matters of opinion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 05:52, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your response, that clarifies things quite nicely and just about matches what I thought was the expectation. As a follow up question, how would one go about handling situations where another editor decided to not follow that expectation and has instead chosen to prematurely remove disputed content that warrants discussion first (including if they engage in edit warring to keep it removed prior to a consensus being reached on its removal)? Sxbbetyy (talk) 17:00, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
First try to engage the editor in a discussion on the talk page to find out why they chose to handle it that way. When explaining you own actions, try not to rely on a wall of shortcut links, rather use a few more words to be more specific, and quote the actual text of any policy or guidance you base your position on. Bludgeoning with shortcut links seldom explains anything, and relies on the reader making the same assumptions that you made, which is seldom the case in a dispute. If they cannot explain their behaviour satisfactorily, you can ask for a neutral third party to assess the situation, and if necessary, report on the incident at WP:AN/I. · · · Peter Southwood : 04:05, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
Just wanted to say sorry for getting you involved in that mess at ANI, it's clear those involved do not agree with the guidelines given at WP:STATUSQUO or any of the other related articles and are insistent on closing the ANI in that favor (and evidently did not adhere to your advice regarding Meta:Don't be a jerk). It really seems at this point that there isn't any real logical reason behind it beyond "winning" that ANI report. Taking the position of reverting every disputed contribution rather than tagging in place certainly is not healthy for WP overall as it serves to enable and condone WP:STONEWALLING. Nonetheless, I appreciate that you took the time to state your position on the topic, even among what was a very hostile discussion involving another admin (as disappointing as that is to say, you certainly embody more of what I expected on this platform). I'm also new to this entire ANI process and haven't actively engaged in the WP community prior to this whole debacle (of which has left a very poor impression of the WP community in my eyes, if this is anything like what I could expect from the rest, at least in the English speaking side), so I do not know any users here. If you know of people who support the stated guidelines in WP:STATUSQUO and would like to chime in on that ANI, it would be much appreciated. But whatever the case, I did want to again thank you for your time, wish you a Merry Christmas, and happy editing! Sxbbetyy (talk) 15:21, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Cogni iitr (12:58, 19 December 2024)

Could you please help me edit and publish a Misplaced Pages page for the annual technical festival of our college? The fest's name is Cognizance and our college name is IIT Roorkee. --Cogni iitr (talk) 12:58, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

The first thing you need to do is establish whether the topic is notable. · · · Peter Southwood : 14:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
As we already have an article for IIT Roorkee, I suggest you add a section there on the festival, as that only requites reliable sources for verifiability, as it will not be a stand-alone article requiring evidence of general notability. Once that is done, you can create a redirect for the festival to that section, so people can easily find it. Please follow the guidelines regarding no promotional language and sticking to encyclopedic content. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 14:22, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Leonardo da vin (03:51, 24 December 2024)

How do I become a mentor? Thanks, --Leonardo da vin (talk) 03:51, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

You volunteer. It helps if you know your way around Misplaced Pages first, and are familiar with the editing procedures and techniques, and the policies, guidelines and how the community functions (and sometimes fails to function). We all have different skills and experience, so generally different people will be able to help with different things. When you don't know something yourself, it is useful if you know where else to go for specialist help. · · · Peter Southwood : 04:24, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
So how do you volunteer? Thanks for the info, though Leonardo da vin (talk) 16:46, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
That information is given in Misplaced Pages:Growth Team features, which you should read through to get some idea of the way the system is intended to work. It is still somewhat experimental, but the stats seem to show it is helping. I think that we are still mainly playing this by feel, and my style may not be representative of the average mentor, if such a thing exists. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 12:40, 25 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from MD Sahib (11:17, 25 December 2024)

Hello, please review my work. And suggest me how to improve it. --MD Sahib (talk) 11:17, 25 December 2024 (UTC)

MD Sahib, When creating or modifying a short description, stick to information that will be most useful to the reader, and leave out less useful information, like aesthetic judgement of a natural phenomenon, unless it is specifically notable for that aesthetic value. It may be worth reading Misplaced Pages:Short description.
As a rule of thumb; if no-one complains you are probably not doing anything seriously wrong. It is generally more pleasant to work on no-contentious topics, at least until you feel more confident in your understanding of the policies and procedures. Refer to the WP:Manual of Style, it can improve your ability to write suitable content. You don't have to be an expert to work on a topic, but you should be aware of your level of knowledge in that topic, and know your limits. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 17:56, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, but I don't set any limits for myself. I like to be an expert in what I do.If there were videos on any platform showing how to use Misplaced Pages's tools, it would be beneficial for beginners. MD Sahib (talk) 18:08, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
I work on both the Bengali and English Wikipedias. Will there be any problems with this? MD Sahib (talk) 17:43, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
As long as you stay within the requirements of each while you are editing it, there should be no problem.
I am not familiar with the requirements of Bengali Misplaced Pages, and they may mostly be compatible with those of English Misplaced Pages, but one cannot assume they will be fully interchangeable, and it is highly probable that there will be significant cultural differences. I suggest you ask around in case there is an admin on one who also edits a lot on the other, and ask for their advice. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood : 17:55, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
I know four languages Bengali English Hindi German and I want to work on Misplaced Pages in each language, will there be any problem with that? And I want access more tools. So what should I do for this? MD Sahib (talk) 18:01, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Advice regarding English and Bengali given above should remain valid for other languages. Access to tools depends on what tools you mean. · · · Peter Southwood : 04:23, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Leonardo da vin (16:31, 25 December 2024)

how to put wikiboxes and wikipedia:babel boxes on your userpage --Leonardo da vin (talk) 16:31, 25 December 2024 (UTC)

uh, i mean mine not yours, OKAY!?!? Leonardo da vin (talk) 16:52, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
They are called userboxes, so the logical place to look is Help:Userboxes. In this case it turns out to be a redirect to Misplaced Pages:Userboxes. A lot of the less basic help pages, the policy pages and guidance pages and information on the inner workings of Misplaced Pages are in the 'Misplaced Pages' name space. Another way of finding these things out is to look at the code of a page where they are used, and copy what looks useful to your user page or sandbox and play with it until you work out what works. With that and future advice in mind, do you edit with Misplaced Pages:VisualEditor or wikicode? · · · Peter Southwood : 17:18, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
How about Misplaced Pages:Babel boxes? That's so confusing that that help page Help:Userboxes is actually Misplaced Pages:Userboxes! Leonardo da vin (talk) 22:51, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages:babel boxes Leonardo da vin (talk) 22:51, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Actually when i edit, i just press the thing that says "edit source" Leonardo da vin (talk) 22:56, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Edit source is editing the wikicode, which is what I do, so we are on the same page there. It is more powerful, but can take longer to learn. Visual editor provides an editing interface that is intended to be easier to learn and use, but is more limited in what you can do. It is a WYSIWYG user interface which you open by clicking on "edit", as opposed to "edit source".
Babel boxes are explained at Misplaced Pages:Babel. A large part of Misplaced Pages's inner works was not top-down designed. It developed from input from a large number of users, often without much coordination between projects, and evolved through trial, error and occasional bickering. It works fairly well most of the time, but is not always intuitive. There are also a number of opt-in tools and gadgets for specific types of work that you can select from your preferences (accessed from the small menu at the top right of the page on the default skin). · · · Peter Southwood : 04:51, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

Question from Gunspice (22:49, 2 January 2025)

Hello Pbsouthwood I’m facing an issue with my Misplaced Pages page, Prisca Abah. Your help would mean a lot before the page is taken down. --Gunspice (talk) 22:49, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

ssh, Pbsouthwood's asleep Leonardo da vin (talk) 23:11, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
In what way is Prisca Abah "your" Misplaced Pages page?
The issue appears to be more a matter of lack of notability due to poor quality references. The reasons given in the deletion proposal are given at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Prisca Abah, you can make counter-proposals or argue against deletion there. The most effective defence would be to show that the topic is WP:NOTABLE by providing sufficient reliable sources.· · · Peter Southwood : 03:21, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
