Sections of downtown were looted and torched. This caused a great uproar of the Hispanic commmunity in the city. As a result of the riot, the city of Camden, rapidly spiralled to its downfall to become of America's most dangerous cities.

The white middle class began its exodus to the surburbs -- a process accelerated by the city's 1971 riots as well as the lure of the new economic engine created by the then-unique Cherry Hill Mall which opened in 1961.
