Vandalia is a suburb of Dayton in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. It is the location of the James M. Cox Dayton International Airport. The population was 14,603 at the 2000 census.
Geography
Vandalia is 10 miles north of Dayton on Dixie Drive (former U.S. Highway 25). It is between the Great Miami River and the Stillwater River. The city has been called the "Crossroads of America" due to its location on the National Road and the Dixie Highway. These correspond to U.S. Highway 40 and the decommissioned U.S. Highway 25, which in turn, have been supplanted by two major expressways: East-West Interstate 70 and North-South Interstate 75.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.8 km² (11.9 mi²). 30.6 km² (11.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.59%) is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 14,603 people, 6,235 households, and 4,090 families residing in the city. The population density was 477.4/km² (1,236.5/mi²). There were 6,489 housing units at an average density of 212.1/km² (549.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.08% White, 1.28% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.
There were 6,235 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $44,463, and the median income for a family was $55,270. Males had a median income of $41,938 versus $26,853 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,199. About 3.5% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.
