- Misplaced Pages is a volunteer curated encyclopedia. That means it is not a social networking site, a place for self-promotion, a marketing medium or a free web host. You are expected to be familiar with the goals of this project before you post here.
- Think. Use common sense. Read this before posting; failure to do so may result in your posts being ignored or mocked.
- If you wish to discuss your link additions, I advise you to be read our conflict of interest and spam policies before posting. These pages contain information about the appropriateness of link additions.

Voting count
Dear MER-C, just a small question. I counted only 4 support votes on the alternative 1 version, did i miscount the votes ? Best regards. Richard --Central Powers 13:40, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ok i wrote in the guidelines that you need only 4 support votes, my mistake, sorry ;) --Central Powers 19:18, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- But the promoted picture was the original, with only 3 support and 2 oppose votes. Please check the FPC talk page - Alvesgaspar 14:09, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
I had clearly meant the alternative, because that's the one I carried out the closing procedure on (I have changed this). FPC on en.wiki is not a vote, I chose the picture that seemed to have the most support behind it. There was consensus to feature something in that nom.
Also, there is no strict time limit on the duration of a featured picture candidacy. I close them when there is sufficient volume to carry out the closing procedure economically. MER-C 05:50, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
RE: http://spam.terminartors.com
We have acknowledged your warning. Would you, please, explain why our external links qualify as spam? Some points to consider:
- terminartors.com is a rather large and very carefully designed project
- presently its database counts some 22,000 paintings, 500+ artists and 1000+ museums, increasing every day. I suppose you agree that it is not a small gallery
- all items are indexed in a very structured pattern so the whole database is searchable in very advanced ways
- the external links we put in Misplaced Pages all go to exact hits, no further search is needed (e.g. if you click our link under Leonardo, the link will point to Leonardo's page at TerminArtors)
Please, reconsider your standpoint and lift the warning.
Sincerely Yours

Interview Removed From Air Guitar Nation article?
Why was the external link I added deleted? It was the only interview with the movie's director in that article, and it's specifically about the movie. Please enlighten me. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.117.162.170 (talk • contribs)
- Because we had already caught you once and you said you would stop adding links. The spamminess of a link addition is related to the number of spam warnings ignored. MER-C 10:30, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I didn't say I wouldn't add links, but okay, fine. I just said "if it bothers you, feel free to delete them". So does this mean any links added from this IP address are marked as spam? It's not a spam domain at all (it's the website of a radio show I like), I didn't really understand what the spam warnings meant. I just wanted to add some links for people interested in those podcasts, I had nothing to gain for myself by adding them. Misplaced Pages is kinda confusing to a new user, especially with the huge, intricate lists of rules and regulations. So I apologize if my additions were misinterpreted. You're just trying to do your job(?) I guess. I do appreciate the explanation at least, so thanks for that. But seriously though, man, don't take this stuff so seriously. 134.117.162.170
- I'm very suspicious of editors adding links after being told not to - this is a very good indicator whether a link needs to be blacklisted (don't worry, I am not contemplating blacklisting your site). Yesterday I caught not one but three spammers reoffending. Sorry about my jumpiness. MER-C 09:12, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
It's cool, though again, it's not my site. Good luck with exams!

Hi Mer-C, question for you. What (or who) were you referring to when you wrote "Writing articles on individual Bratz dolls is a horrible idea. Don't do it." in the List of Bratz characters? Just wondering. Thanx :) Factsonlyplz 04:11, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- It would be a horrible idea because articles on individual Bratz dolls are inappropriate for inclusion in an encyclopedia and would be subject to deletion without warning. MER-C 10:25, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Agree totally, thanx for the clarification! Factsonlyplz 00:45, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I see you tagged a page that was newly created; do you do just NP patrol or do general RC patrol but look out for recently created articles among them to tag? Thanks! Phgao 11:30, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

CSD
Hello, nice work at CSD, is there a reason you don't warn users on their talk pages; Twinkle as you know does both with one click. Warning users is good practice as it alerts them, and they could then fix up an article etc. Ciao... Phgao 12:05, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes. It's painfully obvious why I tag articles for deletion - the reason is mentioned in the top corner of every single page, the title bar of the browser (which appears twice on the screen) and below the title of each page. It's also mentioned three times in the text above the article submission page, and of course in big blue letters at the top of my talk page. The boilerplate warnings miss this point, my talk page header doesn't. Editors who submit vanity pages and spam need a clue, not a template message. I do not want to sound like a broken recording of Captain Obvious.
- Plus I have enough problems with twinkle as it is, while the script I use is one I wrote. MER-C 12:57, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Undo links and warning - what comes next?
Hello MER-C
You recently assisted with removing 30 or so spam links on various Bahamas websites placed by Jbenet7 (talk · contribs). As a result, a final warning was issued
The same user is now back and link spamming continues.
I'm a little green with procedure so I thought I'd come back to you and ask what should be done next.
Thank you for your assist. SurfsUp 00:17, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm thinking local blacklist at the moment as there is no major spamming on various other wikis. I killed the spam and found another spammer. I also requested blacklisting.
- As for dealing with spammers, we have a WikiProject for precisely that purpose. See Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Spam, especially the Removal how-to which contains our standard procedures for dealing with spammers. MER-C 04:14, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Do you keep a "watch" on this incident? What happens or should happen from here? SurfsUp 05:41, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- If a site is added to the local blacklist, it cannot be added to any page on the English Misplaced Pages. So this matter is resolved, for the time being. But between now and then, I will keep an eye out via recent changes. MER-C 05:52, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notes. I see where there's been further spamming reported on some of the non-English Wikis and recommendations from an Administrator on what to do? Jbenet7 came back to one of the pages previously spammed and removed a link?? SurfsUp 00:52, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think it's serious enough yet to warrant a global blacklisting (I did check). My threshold is a bit higher. MER-C 07:02, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for your help. When I see these kind of events, I'm not sure I understand all of the nuances to protocol, however I think I get the general idea. I've been reading through the various links you provided. For example, does Admin do anything further with the blacklist request after your recent comment about the problem not rising to the level of meta? Is there a way to tell when a request is open or closed? SurfsUp 07:27, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
(reset indent) Blacklisting can still proceed locally and will be closed when it is marked Done or Not done. MER-C 07:40, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- In general terms, given one has gotten to the point of having placed a user on notice on their talk page with the appropriate warning and notified the Administrators over at "spam blacklist", what do you do with the spammer in the meantime as they continue to spam? Just wait until the Administrators step in and make a decision? Or do you go into a daily reversion war? What is the typical average turnaround time for the Administrators to dispense a blacklist request? Does any of this rise to the level of AIV? If so, at what point or level? Many thanks for your time. I'm learning. SurfsUp 06:00, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- "Just wait until the Administrators step in and make a decision?" Essentially, yes. The length of the wait varies although there are certain things you can do to speed the process up. MER-C 09:13, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Re: http://spam.lokesewa.com
Please check out the links which I have added before tagging them as SPAM. Plese go through the links and check them. The site does provide some good information about the topics that I edited. Moreover, I linked the topics with the relevant pages of that website and not only to the homepage of the website.
If you find after checking it that I have done something wrong, then please feel free to remove them. I respect the authenticity of Misplaced Pages and would not try to tarnish it. I humbly request you to please check out the links added by me and do not put them in SPAM list before reviewing them.
You removed my link from "Punjabi Kisse" topic. It is a punjabi language word and means stories written in punjabi language. I linked it to the page "Punjabi Literature and Poetry" in the website www.lokesewa.com. Please clarify me that how can this addition be a SPAM as stated by you. You can check any of the links added by me and you would find that they all are not spam but genuine pointers. I know that I edited quite a lot topics today. But all these are relevant edits.
Moreover, the site (www.lokesewa.com) does not belong to me as stated by you. So I am not advertising my product. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cooldeveloper (talk • contribs)
- Misplaced Pages also defines spam in the way a link is added - the spamminess of a link is proportional to the number of links added and the number of warnings ignored. Your edits also reek of self-promotion. MER-C 13:35, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
A Question
Hello, I have seen this term pop up on Wiki a couple times today and it has me confused. What does the "cross wiki" in "cross wiki spamming" mean? Is that across all of Misplaced Pages (other languages too) or just English Misplaced Pages? I know what spamming is, but the "cross wiki" part has me confused. Thanks ahead of time for helping me understand this (too many terms :) ). Take Care...NeutralHomer 02:44, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- It means that more than one Wikimedia project was spammed (usually this means the biggest ones i.e. en, de, fr, en.wikt). An example would be this incident where the ips 62.11.1.29, 62.11.2.10, 62.11.6.127 and 62.11.15.195 added links to the same site (sudopontino.net) in a short period of time. MER-C 08:53, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, now I understand. Where I was confused was, if it was just English Wiki or all Wikis (my guess was just English Wiki). That one person (in the diff) hit 10 different Wikis....that's crazy. Thanks, though, for helping me understand another wiki-term...there should be a Wiki Term Dictionary, hey, that's a good idea :) Take Care....NeutralHomer 09:52, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
POTD notification
Hi MER-C,
Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Human skeleton front.svg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on October 31, 2007. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2007-10-31. I'm thinking about featuring both front and back views for the Main Page, but the template is only built for a single image, so that will require some tweaking. I think this is the first time we've had a suitable picture for Halloween. :) howcheng {chat} 19:24, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Spamming of http://spam.reveillemag.com
"Spam" on Otis Rush article
I wonder why you removed the link added by Tornadorx to the Otis Rush article. As one of the contributors to this article (and as a big fan of the artist), I consider the link provide useful insights, and is far from what we generally regard as spam. While I respect your efforts to do away with spams on Misplaced Pages, I would like to ask you to take more time to carefully examine what you are trying to remove before actually doing so. I have put the link back as I do not see any evident violation of the guidelines. I hope you understand. Thanks! --Sumori 03:00, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
- Spamlinks are removed regardless of the quality of the spammed site because they were added in bad faith. The spammers' only (recent) contributions have been to add links to that site. See also WT:WPSPAM#http://spam.reveillemag.com and WT:WPSPAM#Editors spamming http://spam.britannica.com for why I removed the links. I don't particularly mind if good faith editors readd the links. Sorry about those spam links, one of our writers didn't know the proper wikipedia ettequite.
Many of the links/articles/interviews we have posted are very relevant to the topic and not meant as spam or promotion at all, but in the future I have informed them to propose it to the page maintainers first instead of spamming.

Hi MER-C. At the top of your talk page, you say "* I am not an administrator and don't intend on becoming one." But looking at your second RfA(which came pretty close to succeeding), it seems like you would make a great administrator. I've consistantly seen you tirelessly clean up vandalism, as well as helping to make sure Misplaced Pages is not put in legal jeopardy with patroling the new images added. Yeah, I kinda regret reopening that FLC because about a minute after I did that, I knew it gave future complainers precedent. At that point it was too late. The user I'm currently dealing with had made two FLCs for a page within 2 weeks (a page that I would rather nominate for an afd than an FLC, but oh well) and basically said he was going to nominate the page again. So, I figured I might as well reopen it, and maybe once it failed again he would give up. As for calling something a "no conensus" closure, I used to do that, but in the end I figured it made no difference. -- Scorpion 04:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Wikipe-tan (FL)
Thank you for your clarification on the debate. Considering the timing it felt too sudden hence the confusion. As per aliasing problem, seemingly since that is what keep the image from keeping Featured status, then it's safe to assume that correcting that problem will reverse the outcome of the delisting? In part, it's certainly not "irreparable" if redone correctly. A vector would suffice, yes? Fox816 05:08, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Considering the fine work done converting Commons:Image:Wikipe-tan Birthday.png to Commons:Image:Wikipe-tan Birthday.svg done by Commons:User:Editor at Large, who has offered to convert Image:Wikipe-tan full length.png, your judgement of "irreparable" has just been blown out of the water. -- Ned Scott 03:40, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
