The Naked Brothers Band is a 2005 ebullient mockumentary about a kids' rock band. Originally independent, the movie was later adopted by Nickelodeon. The movie premiered on January 27, 2007. The movie won an audience award for family feature film at the 2005 Hamptons International Film Festival.

Plot

The plot centers two real-life brothers Nat and Alex Wolff who are members of a six-member band called the Silver Boulders. The band features singer-songwriter/keyboardist Nat Wolff, drummer Alex Wolff, the band’s manager Cooper Pillot, cellist Thomas Batuello, guitarist Joshua Kaye, and keyboardist David Levi (who has known the Wolff brothers since pre-school). Nat and Alex thought they were living the good life until the band breaks up. Thomas writes his own ballad called “Boy’s Rule Girls Drool” and Nat doesn’t approve his song choice. Nat writes his own ballad about his crush Rosalina (he speaks in a British accent whenever Rosalina talks to him to act like one of the Beatles) and the rest the band didn’t want to use his song choice because they didn’t want to write love songs about girls. Thomas, David, and Josh go there separate ways and form a new band called “The Gold Boulders.”

After, the band breaks up Alex’s lemon-lime soda addiction spun out of control. After, Nat and Alex decide to change the band’s name back to The Naked Brothers Band like they use to. The Naked Brothers Band features 12-year-old guitarist Cole Hawkins, 11-year-old bassist Rosalina, and 9-year-old band manger Cooper Pillot (including Nat and Alex).

They go on tour to a Chicago concert and The Naked Brothers Band competes against The Gold Boulders. The Gold Boulders performs first and sings Thomas’s ballad “Boy’s Rule Girls Drool” and the crowd hated it and right before the Naked Brothers Band performs Rosalina asks him if that British girl Rosalina was really his never ending love (which Nat told her to cover up his real feelings for her) then Nat say’s “I wrote it for you” and then Rosalina kisses him on the cheek. The band performed “Hardcore Wrestlers with Inner Feelings” and “Rosalina” featuring Dad on the accordion near the ending of the song and the crowd loved it. David, Thomas, and Josh watched them perform “Rosalina” and they liked it and wanted to join the band.

Nat throws a party for the band, which was on the 4th of July. Then, there was a knock on the apartment door, it was David, Thomas, and Josh and they all apologized. Then, they performed their hit song “Crazy Car” on the roof of the apartment building just like the Beatles did. They managed to let Rosalina in the band as the bassist. Unfortunately, Cole had to go back to Connecticut and Josh didn’t want to be in the TV series, but Qaasim Middleton replaces him in the series.

Background/Production

When Nat and Alex were young, one day they announced, "We’re the Naked Brothers Band!" while dancing naked around their apartment after a bath. They formed a band in preschool with Nat's best friends. Draper let Nat film his own sitcom, "Don’t Eat Off My Plate", which was the origin of the Naked Brothers movie. Nat Wolff wrote all of the songs performed in the movie, except 'That's How It Is' which was written by Alex Wolff.

The brothers real-life mother Polly Draper (best known for her role as Ellyn Warren on the 1987–91 show thirtysomething) created and produced the film and their father Michael Wolff (who was the band-leader for The Arsenio Hall Show, from 1989–94) is the co-executive producer and music supervisor of the film. Wolff stars as the brothers' geeky father, who plays the accordion and would do anything to be in the band.

The film has special appearances by 18 celebrities including Arsenio Hall, Cyndi Lauper, Julianne Moore, Uma Thurman, Tony Shaloub and Cindy Blackman.

The film was Draper’s first shot at directing; her screenwriting debut was in 1999 with The Tic Code.

The executive vice president and general manager of Nickelodeon:

At first we were intrigued by the idea, but we weren't sure that kids would understand the vague tongue-and-cheek of it. Then a bunch of us took it home to our own children, and they loved it.

An executive producer of the series said he thought the brothers would be big when he watched the film at the Hamptons International Film Festival:

They're just real: real brothers, real friends; it's all the stuff kids do when they're hanging out on the playground. The idea that you're watching a documentary is so much fun. Then you put them into that fantasy of being a world-famous rock band, and that's the sauce that makes it work.
