The Jakarta International School (JIS) is the largest private international school in South Jakarta, Indonesia. JIS was founded in 1951 by a group of expatriates in Jakarta with the name Joint Embassy School. The school is now governed by a School Council that is overseen by a Board of Governors representing three of the founding embassies: United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
The school offers classes for students from pre-K to 12th grade based on an international curriculum which draws from the best around the world. A very extensive International Baccalaureate diploma program is offered as well Advanced Placement courses. Until 1994 the school was a second campus for the United Nations International School of New York, although the two schools are now independent.
Campuses
The school's headquarters are located in the Cilandak campus, near the residential neighborhood of Pondok Indah in the south of the city. Cilandak Campus also hosts the middle school (grades 6-8) and the high school (grades 9-12). There are two elementary school campuses catering to the international community of Jakarta in different parts of the city: Pondok Indah Elementary - which is connected to the Cilandak Campus - and Pattimura Elementary, located further north near the central business district.

The school participates in the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools, competing in various sports and other competitions (such as Model United Nations and cultural convention).
Middle School
The middle school has more than 2,000 students and faculty. The Principal is Geoff Smith, the vice principal Steven Meade and the Activities Director Michael Boots. Intense competitions occur in the 3 different interscholastic sporting seasons. There are 6 different learning communities and three grades. LC 1 - LC 2 for Grade 6 ; LC 3 - 4 for Grade 7 and LC 5 - 6 for Grade 8.
High School
The high school caters to about 1,100 students from about 60 countries in grades 9 to grade 12. Most of the facilities within the high school are also shared by the middle school. The school is academically focused, and students consistently perform above average on the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement examinations. The high school is presided over by a Principal, currently held by Dr. Timothy Stuart. There are two Vice-Principals: one in charge of academics, presently Roger Brumby and one in charge of administration, Peter Round. Two other administerial posts are those of the Sporting Director, Mark Gray and the Activities Director, Julie Rusnak.
Elementary School
Both the Elementary campuses, at Pondok Indah and Pattimura Elementary, cater to grades pre-K to 5. The campuses have extensive facilities-libraries, gymnasiums, swimming pools, computer rooms, music rooms, art rooms and playgrounds.
