You're back

Oh goody. Hope you're feeling better. seresin (public computer) 13:38, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, feeling a little better. Are you back now? Seraphim♥Whipp 13:44, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
From my nap? Yes. I didn't really leave, just have had a lack of internet. seresin (public computer) 18:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad that was all :). I think there's a possibility that I'm going to be quite busy in the coming days. Keep your eyes peeled :). Seraphim♥Whipp 18:44, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Yay :D. Welcome back :) Sceptre 18:54, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank-you :). Seraphim♥Whipp 18:56, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Are you GT-able atm? I'm too tired to compose an email right now :P Sceptre 18:59, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Yep ok. 'Bout 5 mins? Seraphim♥Whipp 19:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Cool. (Although it's now 13 minutes, I'm not holding it against you :P) Sceptre 19:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationales

I don't get it. What are fair use rationales? ILikeMusicaLot (talk) 17:26, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

A fair use rationale is a written explanation (which we add to an image description page) of why we should be allowed to use a copyrighted image (a non-free image) as "there is no automatic entitlement to use non-free content in an article". So to show you a working example of this, click here.
So if you believe wikipedia is justified in using a non-free image, you would fill out a template like this:
{{Non-free use rationale
| Description =
| Source =
| Article =
| Portion =
| Low_resolution =
| Purpose =
| Replaceability =
| other_information =
}}
"Purpose" is a rather important field as it is the place where you explain why the image benefits the readers of the article in which it is being displayed. For the image I linked above, the purpose is to act as "the primary means of visual identification of the article topic".
WP:FURG can help explain how you fill those fields out and this essay might help explain a few things too. If you have any more questions or would like me to explain in more detail, you are more than welcome to ask me :). Seraphim♥Whipp 18:11, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'll add a rationale to that image now! ILikeMusicaLot (talk) 18:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Go you! Glad I could help. :) Seraphim♥Whipp 18:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

AfDs

Seraphim, regarding your comment on my talk page, if the discussions are discussions and not votes, then why should we be afraid to discuss? If you really believe that commenting on those we disagree with multiple times is not helpful, would you agree that then say a nominator arguing for deletion who comments on every keep post is also problematic? I can provide you with examples if you would like, because I am really curious as to what you think is okay as discussion and what isn't. Look at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Appeasement of Hitler, do you think anyone is over discussing? What about Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/List of fictional Alumni of Real Universities? Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't mind discussing things with other people, I just have trouble with you. I find that such "discussions" are not productive and serve no purpose other than to make me want to destroy things. Mainly my keyboard...by smashing it. Or destroying my mouse by throwing it at the wall. Repeatedly.
So my mouse is begging you not to badger me at afd. Sincerely, Seraphim♥Whipp 18:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
So, would it then be okay if I made the same request for all those with whom I believe do not add productive or purposeful comments in Afds? Also, if anything should make you want to destroy things, let it be the price gouging by oil companies!  :) Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
You do whatever you think is best, like I have in making my request. I enjoy editing very much, but at present you make my time here very un-enjoyable (and very little makes me impatient or frustrated). If you really do believe that WP:Editors matter, then I'm sure you'll honour my request. Seraphim♥Whipp 18:53, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I will indeed strongly consider it, but I hope that you will take note of others on the other side of these discussions who in effect do the same thing you suggest I do (the difference is I don't call people names like some do) and will also caution them as well. And as I said once before, I again urge you to try the Resse's Whipps! Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 18:58, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
My mouse and keyboard thanks you. Seraphim♥Whipp 19:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Seraphim, why would make the above request and then comment to me in such a fashion? I am trying to defuse that disagreement civily per User talk:Protonk#Suggestion, User talk:Protonk#Precedents, and User talk:Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles#suggestion and I set up User:Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles/Deletion discussions in the hopes that neutral parties would offer me suggestions on the talk page. Best, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 22:01, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Because the most important thing I told you, you completely ignored. You don't have to listen, but you think you'd give it go when you're frustrating what seems to be a group of editors by using that technique. Seraphim♥Whipp 22:04, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I am willing to follow that advice, but in that particular interest after I had been trying to deescalte the disagreements with that editor in a civil fashion, he then goes ahead and starts a thread like that, I didn't see it meriting any other kind of response. Please note my comments to him on his talk page and in the AfDs that we disengage or what have you and AFTER those why someone would not try to resolve disagreements in a civil fashion when offered baffles me. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 22:16, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't know...perhaps Protonk wanted some completely neutral input (Jaysweet is pretty darn awesome over there). I'm glad you accepted my straight talking. I have the feeling you could do with some good ol' venting...and I do get the impression that there's a slight passive-aggressiveness thing going on sometimes as a result. Seraphim♥Whipp 22:35, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
It's frustrating when I really am trying to defuse the situation in a civil fashion and then he starts yet another thread at Administrators' noticeboard/3RR#User:Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles reported by User:Protonk .28Result: .29, which to me shows lack of knowledge of 3RR, i.e. it's the fourth revert, which I have not and will not do. Plus, my retitles (all different ones mind you) have been made in the effort of making the thread less pointed and to be honest less insulting. I'm not sure what more he wants. Notice at the end of the Wikiquette alert...I have agreed not to respond to people with similarly worded replies any further. And I have tried to engage him in a manner to somehow resolve things peaceably. What more can anyone realistically want? Again, even before this matter, I set up this hoping I would get constructive feedback regarding XfDs. I do not know how many others have set up such areas. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 22:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Title/3rr

Starting this here (I'll watchlist this page) to avoid confusion on my part:

Of course it still has a useful purpose. for one, I don't think that copying my format for the WQA entirely and providing the same style allegations in reverse shows that he has decided to refrain from the behavior in question. Frankly I think that he is flaunting the accusation. Also, I don't subscribe to the notion that the problems are a disagreement between the two of us (me and LRGdC...err LRGdC and I). We disagree, naturally, but the diffs represent his actions in response to several editors, not just me. I also don't think that literally avoiding copying responses is sufficient. in my opinion, he is being deliberately obtuse and pointedly polite in order to take umbrage if someone looses their cool and responds in frustration. in this case is it especially frustrating to find olive branches in my talk page from him which serve to later buttress claims that I am unwilling to compromise. I think it is bad Wikiquette at the very least and that is why the WQA is staying. Thank you for your honest efforts at reconciliation. Protonk (talk) 23:44, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

He did agree to stop repeating people's comments back, which does show he's made a step in correcting a problem you identified. Perhaps separating the WQA into two entries (say under two sub-headings), would A.) Make it easier for a neutral party to comment on B.) Allow eachother to express qualms C.) Enable each other to address points made. I think the best thing to do right now would be for you to condense your post down, expressing what it is your have concerns about and what outcome you would like. Clean slate and what not. Le Grand could rewrite his response to your concerns and likewise. I will say one thing, Le Grand has had a bit of a tough day with regards to being given criticism. Seraphim♥Whipp 23:56, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
the WQA WAS two separate entries (following his addition of one on me but prior to his fusion of the two) But if it will help, I'll break it back up. Protonk (talk) 02:40, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
What will help will be to let sleeping dogs lie. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 02:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. There is such a thing as beating a dead horse and needlessly exacerbating things that for all intents and purposes have been resolved. There are far more rewarding and worthwhile aspects of Misplaced Pages to focus on instead. Sincerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 00:02, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm asking you please stop. Let this WQA run its course without insinuating that I am obsessed or vindictive. Please stop insisting that this WQA is about a dispute between us. It isn't. I tried to make that clear in the WQA text and in comments on your talk page. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a standing dispute between us. From my point of view there is the matters at hand in the WQA and the 3RR (the 3RR I'm happy to withdraw if we can agree on keeping the two WQA's separate as Seraphim suggested above). I think it is unfair and dishonest to paint my actions as borne from some dispute between us. It debases the accusations and makes it seem as though your talk page entreaties to me were rejected in bad faith. I don't know what is so hard about laying bare the facts and letting the process work. I made a WQA. You rebutted my claims. Some other people may or may not weight in. The process goes on. Protonk (talk) 02:50, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
I have asked you multiple times to not escalate things further. I think your comments about me are unfair and dishonest, and given my agreement with Seraphim Whipp, unnecessary at this point. You already had Seraphim Whipp and DGG comment. You don't need some unnecessary pile on that will just make things worse. Please walk away and end this so that we can both get back to improving the project. Sicnerely, --Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles 02:57, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

LSTI deleted

Hi, my LSTI entry was deleted as it used the same text from a news item. I am one of the chairmen of the LSTI (a Wireless industry initiative) and we have been through reviews to agree on our descriptive text. I guess we own the copyright, but clearly it's in our interest to distribute this freely. Is there a way to do this within Misplaced Pages? (sorry if this is a FAQ) LSTI editor (talk) 16:22, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

You're very welcome to ask questions. Textual content has to be GFDL license compatible and as you said, it's not in your interest to distribute that freely. The easiest way around this would be to write the article from scratch in your own words. However, the article would need to be able to pass the criteria at WP:CORP. An entity is considered notable if there are reliable sources which have written about the entity. You might want to use news articles that discuss the company. Do be aware of WP:COI, and make sure to present the topic from a neutral point of view. If you're going to continue to be an editor, I would also suggest that you change your username to something that doesn't have your company name in. Feel free to ask any more questions, or if you want anything explained. The wiki way can be a bit tough to understand at first! Seraphim♥Whipp 16:42, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. In fact we ARE happy to share the text and let other people copy it (journalists do it all the time). Is there a way to use this frequently quoted text in Misplaced Pages? Regarding notability, we are often accused of being "shrouded in mystery". I'm working to remedy this, and I thought a wiki would help. LSTI editor (talk) 21:07, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
To be honest, a paragraph like that, though it is very well written, would probably be unsuitable for wikipedia in that format anyway. It would save a lot of trouble by just writing something original. If you have some more sources like the one above, I'd be prepared to begin the article for you. Off the top of my head, Google is a great example of an article about a business. Seraphim♥Whipp 22:38, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

No problem. I'm rubbish at copy-editing my own stuff. Feel like giving Made in the Dark a once over? (I'm just gonna go tweak the prose first, let me know :) ). Seraphim♥Whipp 15:38, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay. If we're both taking the pages to FAC, let's keep an eye on each other's. Sceptre 15:40, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
That's a fine idea. I'm sure I'm far too attached to MintD to see where I've made mistakes. Seraphim♥Whipp 15:43, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
If I can be honest, your prose is a little bit blocky, and I might end up shaving a few kilobytes off when improving it :) Sceptre 16:00, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I know *sigh*. I probably shouldn't haven't written the bulk of it in one day. The thought of copy-editing that much prose kept driving me away so I never got round to re-writing the prose like it needed. Seraphim♥Whipp 16:06, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Done. I got rid of about 2KB of fluff. I think it might be ready for FAC now :) Sceptre 16:53, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

One last thing before I put "The Stolen Earth" on FAC - can you have another look over the critical reception section? If you want to, this may be helpful in satisfying the criterion that "its prose is engaging, even brilliant, and of a professional standard" - something the section may stumble on. Thanks! You know Misplaced Pages rules - you have to upload a picture of him with a cute caption :p. Any case, it's on my watchlist for when you nom it. Sceptre 11:00, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
I have news! The tiny grey tabby was a boy, which we decided to name Rufus. However, we never actually got to meet him and got strung along by the family who were supposed to be giving him to us. On the day we were supposed to collect him, the owners said they had let him out (12 week old kitten who hadn't had any injections yet) and he'd not come back home. Fortunately, their neighbours found him and took him to the vets. My mum rang the vets, told them we were supposed to be giving him a home...and then we got the bad news. He had an ulcer on his eye, which meant his eye would need to be removed, he was going blind in the other eye and had cat flu. The nurse said that one of the nurses at the practice were going to give him a home. We were all very upset, but were at least happy that he'd get all the care he needed.
Onto the happier news, yesterday we visited a woman who cares for cats for the cat protection league. She had five kittens, and four of them needed to be re-homed. A brother and sister, and a girl and boy. My mum and I fell instantly in love with the brother and sister, but unfortunately, the woman said that we could not take them home that day because she had already promised to show the kittens to someone else. I was taken with the fifth kitten, who is about 7 weeks old and not ready to be re-homed. The lady said that the kitten (May) was a nibbler and that she'd have trouble finding a home for her but... she very much warmed to me, and that was it! We've decided to call her Bailey, and we'll be able to take her home within the next two weeks! And depending on whether the other two kittens are taken or not, we're very seriously considering having them as well! Seraphim♥Whipp 10:51, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Cute. If you took the picture with a wide-angled lens, she'd be super cute. Shame about Rufus, though. Though it does make me think of naked mole rats. :/ Sceptre 10:55, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm very excited! The woman said she's a nibbler, but I just thought it was adorable as she's only got tiny tiny teeth. Seraphim♥Whipp 12:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Vampire Weekend

Link to my post. Seraphim♥Whipp 09:50, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

What is Afro-pop? It probably isn't African popular music, because that article is discussing popular music from the African continent. Vampire Weekend is an indie rock band from NYC. Either the sources are wrong, or you are linking to the wrong Wiki article. WesleyDodds (talk) 09:34, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Also, it's best not to cite reviews for genre classification, because the purpose of a review is to critique the music, not necessarily to classify a band. WesleyDodds (talk) 09:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
I changed it to say Afro-pop influences and did not wikilink it, in the hopes of meeting a middle ground. I will say however, if the scope of the African popular music article is not as inclusive as it should be, that shouldn't prevent us from linking to it. How on earth can you claim the sources are wrong? Surely it's your opinion that's wrong? It's sources that matter, not personal opinion. Genres should always be referenced if contentious. The sources provided are perfectly adequate to be used as sources to support genre, because they discuss the band's sound in far more detail. Seraphim♥Whipp 09:50, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
The press isn't always right. These are writing created by human beings, who occasionally are incorrect, lie, or just don't know what they are talking about. I can give you famous examples (Jayson Blair, for one) of incorrect sources even among the most reputable and respected publications. Particularly with the music press, you have to watch out for hyperbole, wordplay, and just plain bad writing. When reading sources, you have to ascertain whether or not they adequate, and sometimes they aren't. That Pitchfork review is fine to cite for their critical commentary about the album, but it's inappropriate to use is as a primary source for the band's genre. So you're trying to say to me that all three sources must be wrong? The Washington Post, Pitchfork and The New York Times? I have countless others I could add to support afro pop influences... I can't see any objective motivation for why you don't want that genre in the infobox. You haven't provided any reason than "the sources are wrong" or "the sources aren't good enough". I'll be quite happy to substantiate my claim with more sources if you request. The difficulty here is that I'm having trouble trying to understand where you're coming from. I understand that African popular music is music from the African continent, but it's not my job to dispute what the sources have said. There clearly is a different style of music that incorporates African rhythms, and is influenced by African music, called Afro-pop. It's just a case of the wikipedia article having a limited scope. This is perhaps something I can change. Seraphim♥Whipp 10:12, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Death Cab

Yeah, I realised three seconds after hitting save. Sceptre 16:16, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I think I have exacted upon you what is colloquially known as a "burn" right now. Though I'm not telling you how; that's for you to figure out. Sceptre 00:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
I've figured it out. As you know, we were able to get the brother and sister cats. We've called them Odin and Ruby and here are some cute pictures of them:
I don't know if we can have Bailey now...The two have settled in really well already. Seraphim♥Whipp 18:37, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Gah :(. Though I don't explicitly say it's my idea, neither do I cutpaste from AFC - I do a bit of wikifying, etc. Sceptre 16:56, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
You just have to save the article specifically as written and credit it to the right person, making your own edits after. Seraphim♥Whipp 16:57, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Good point. Thanks anyway. I went through my AFC creations last night and was shocked to find so few. Sceptre 17:00, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
No problem! You're not the only one to do that! :) Lol. Does this mean I have executed a burn on you now? :P Seraphim♥Whipp 17:03, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Nah... you can't talk to me about GFDL compliance. And because you're an admin, you can make your archives so! :P Sceptre 17:08, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
I still don't know why you think the GFDL is preserved more with moving lol. The only difference is navigation. Providing every comment is signed and dated, the GFDL is perfectly preserved! Seraphim♥Whipp 17:16, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Becayse I never edited your archive 6 ;). Seriously, it's better off to move talk pages when archiving; if I want to review a post I made in March 2006, I can find it easier if the talk was moved, instead of hunting through the page history. Sceptre 17:19, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Aha, but then by your standards, we couldn't merge information from article A to article B because the author never edited article B! But anyway, have a good evening, I'm off out. Seraphim♥Whipp 18:04, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Tiny prayer to Father Time

How's my GFDL compliance look now? Sceptre 15:13, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Much better, although you've just been given credit for a DYK submission that you did not write. Seraphim♥Whipp 09:50, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. Oh dear :/ Sceptre 12:07, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
All sorted though. I've been checking out other AfC creations (checked about 15 days of July) but apart from one person, the majority are compliant :). It's one of those problem areas though, because the way afc operates is really sucky in terms of attribution. I've got an idea about how we can fix this so I'm going to suggest it at the talk page. Come join the debate, tell me what you think. Seraphim♥Whipp 12:24, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Turns out that two days ago, someone had a better idea! Seraphim♥Whipp 12:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks...

for catching and crediting that properly. Didn't occur to me to check for possible AFC articles when handing out the thank you credits. Thanks!--JayHenry (talk) 02:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

No problem! You would have seen the credit on the template as it was when it was nominated, and the nomination was where the credit wasn't given. I told iMatthew - he was great about it! Seraphim♥Whipp 10:01, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I won, apaprantly

In other words, you know you were wrong to do it, and I was right. Get over yourself; who appointed you the sole arbiter on what gets on the front page.--Bedford 10:41, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
