This page is for nominations to appear in the "Did you know" section (reproduced on the right) on the Main Page.
Instructions
Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.
DYK criteria
Unofficial criteria: LaPella's unwritten rules
- DYK evaluation includes:
- Length - The Article should contain at least 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles having more than 1,500 characters of prose still may be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
- Verification - The DYK hook fact in the article needs an inline cite at the end of the sentence and the article in general should use inline, cited sources.
- Date - The new article should be no more than five days old and the expanded article should be expanded at least fivefold with new text within the last five days.
- Length
- DYK qualifying characters: To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a JavaScript extension like User:Dr pda/prosesize.js (instructions on the talk page), a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools" ("Review" in Office 2007), then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. For Mac users, Apple has a Word counter widget available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Note: The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.
- Lists: Proposed lists need 1,500+ characters of prose text. The listed items themselves are not counted as part the the 1,500 DYK qualifying characters
- Verification
- Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
- interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
- short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
- neutral,
- definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
- always cited in the article with an inline citation.
- Please note that hooks are subject without notice to copyediting as they move to the main page. The nature of the DYK process makes it impractical to consult users over every such edit. In particular, hooks will be shortened if they are deemed too long: the 200-character limit is an outside limit, not a recommended length. Also, watch the suggestions page to ensure that no issues have been raised about your hook, because if you do not respond to issues raised your hook may not be featured at all.
- Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
- Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
- Other issues
- Pictures: Pictures accompanying the DYK hook should be:
- freely licensed suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely licensed pictures;
- suitable, attractive, and interesting at a 100x100px-wide resolution;
- already in the article; and
- relevant to the article.
- Pictures: Pictures accompanying the DYK hook should be:
- Sounds: Sounds accompanying the DYK hook should have similar qualities to pictures, and should be formatted using
{{DYK Listen|filename.ogg|Brief description}}
- Sounds: Sounds accompanying the DYK hook should have similar qualities to pictures, and should be formatted using
Sample DYK suggestion strings
Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.
- Nom without image:
{{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
- Nom with image:
{{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
|article2=
|article3=
|article4=
| (etc) - To include more than one author:
|author2=
|author3=
| (etc) - To include alternate hooks:
|ALT1=
|ALT2=
| (etc) - To add a comment:
|comment=
- To add the article you reviewed:
|reviewed=
- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.
An example of how to use the template is given below:
{{subst:DYKsug | article = Example | hook = ... that this ] is an ''']''' ''(pictured)''? | creator = Jimbo Wales | expander = | nominator = | image = Example.png | comment = }}
- Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
- When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
- Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
- If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|January 9}} Thanks, ~~~~
Symbols
If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:
Symbol | Code | DYK Ready? | Description |
---|---|---|---|
{{subst:DYKtick}} | Yes | No problems, ready for DYK | |
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} | Yes | Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith | |
{{subst:DYK?}} | Query | DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
| |
{{subst:DYK?no}} | Maybe | DYK eligibility requires some additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
| |
{{subst:DYKno}} | No | Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible |
Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?
This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Misplaced Pages:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.
Where is my hook?
If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings at the bottom of this page.
If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

- An interesting article, but unfortunately completely ineligible for DYK. This is not a new article; in fact, the initial version of the article is dated February 2008. On Dec 31, 2008 the article had a slight extension, but it was far less than a fivefold expansion (not even two-fold) compared with its previous version, dated Dec 13, 2008. Sorry, but completely ineligible for DYK according to WP:DYK#DYK rules. Nsk92 (talk) 04:39, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree. The article written in user space, and moved to main space here. "Unwritten" Rule D7. Art LaPella (talk) 05:05, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Please look at the full history log of the article. The article was initially created in mainspace on February 27, 2008 and was gradually expanded in mainspace over the next 9 months. Here is the diff comparing the current version with the version of December 13, 2008. The fact that the revision provided in your diff was prepared in user space does not make this a new article (because a previous version of the article already existed in mainspace), nor does it make it a 5x+ expansion compared with the previous operative version of December 13, 2008. Nsk92 (talk) 05:34, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Oops, I take it back. I see that the article was moved from userspace into mainspace using an actual pagemove rather than traditional paste-in, so the history log portion I was looking at actually referred to the time when it was still a user subpage. So it does qualify as a new article. Nsk92 (talk) 05:43, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hmmm, now I am really confused. I don't see anything relevant in the move log but I do see a creation of a brand new manual redirect from a user subpage to the mainspace article on Dec 31. Could someone else please take a look at this and try to figure out what exactly is going on? Nsk92 (talk) 05:57, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I thought this is the move log, which shows a move, and therefore I thought the article's previous version couldn't have existed in main space or it would have prevented the move. A move automatically creates a redirect from the "from" page to the "to" page. But others are certainly welcome to look. Art LaPella (talk) 06:05, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I think you are right. I was looking for the record of this move by clicking on "View logs for this page" in the history page of the article itself, but for some reason the move does not show up there. However, it does show in the log section for the Sandbox page, as you pointed out. So it seems that everything is Ok with the date of the article after all and that it was created in mainspace on Dec 31, 2008 and so the article is DYK eligible as a new article. - That's an unwritten precedent rather than a rule, and I invite comments from others, but since time is running out, yes I would move it to December 20, although that was 10 days ago. Art LaPella (talk) 05:05, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, moving it to the 20th is probably equivalent to removing this entry as a candidate. So, I would simply say if someone feels like making a minor exception to the guidelines they can approve it as is. It seems to me a fair proposal especially given that MaramadukePercy did the expansion in two stages, with a 3.5x expansion on the 29th. Template:DYKsuggestion at 18:13, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Verified. Length, date, hook and image. RMHED (talk) 20:02, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I am un-ticking this entry. IMO, the hook does ont satisfy one of the key official DYK rules:"Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided." A hook about somebody's loss of sexual potency due to overeating on biscuits, given in the context of a post-divorce squabble, certainly qualifies as negative. I suggest that the nominator proposes a different hook for this article, without these BLP problems. Nsk92 (talk) 20:25, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- I can re-change the hook if you want – but it needs to be pointed out that (as mentioned in the article) this claim pre-dates their divorce by some months (and thus is not part of "a post-divorce squabble"), is a direct quote from Madonna, sourced in the article to two reliable sources (the Daily Mail and the Fox News website) with (literally) hundreds more sources out there (I used these two to give a wide geographical spread), and at no point was denied by either party. How about "…that in 2002 McVitie's provided almost half a million biscuits free to women attending Ann Summers parties?" or "…that the design of a 1970s Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin depicting a garden party was rejected by Tesco as it included a couple having sex and two dogs copulating in the flowerbed?"? – iridescent 20:43, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Re your first point, I am not questioning the fact that the statement in the initial hook is actually supported by reliable sources. But DYK rules regarding DYK hooks are more stringent than the general WP:BLP rules and specify that any hooks that focus on negative aspects of living persons (even if properly sourced) should be avoided. Regarding your other two suggestions. The second one (regarding the Huntley & Palmers biscuit design) really pushes the boundaries of good taste, in my opinion, which is also undesirable under the general DYK neutrality rules (which are also more stringent than WP:NPOV). The one about McVitie's might work, although it needs to be properly formated as a suggested hook, with a link to the nominated article being bolded. Nsk92 (talk) 21:09, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- I like the last hook. It don't think it's distasteful. It's simply stating fact. I can understand the BLP issues, but it's not distasteful to mention that a company rejected an ad that was, perhaps, distasteful. However, I think the image is inappropriate for the main page and it's not relevant to any presented hook, so I've removed it from the template here. لennavecia 21:42, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree re last hook but, more to the point, after re-reading the entire article more carefully I am much inclined to axe it as a DYK candidate altogether. Perhaps some other DYK regulars can chime in here, since I am a relative newcomer myself. The article seems to me to be a good AfD candidate as the topic appears to be artificially created by assembling several disjointed references and seems, in my opinion not to exist as a coherent topic discussed as such by reliable sources. In the references given I don't really see any of the sources discussing the connection between sex and biscuits as a coherent subject. For example, the Madonna-Guy Ritchie episode does not even seem to fall into the scope of the article as it is defined in the article's opening paragraph. Madonna claimed that Ritchie was trying to lose weight on a "cookie diet" and that the loss of sex drive was one of the side-effects. That does not really correspond well to the article's stated subject: "human sexual behavior involving biscuits or cookies, to pornographic material involving biscuits and cookies, or to the use of biscuits and cookies as a medium for the production and distribution of pornography". The McVitie's story also seems like rather a stretch. A careful reading of the reference provided there shows that McVitie's justified its partnership decision with Ann Summers by demographic marketing considerations ("new cookies are aimed at the same target market - women aged 20-45") rather than by asserting a special connection between biscuits and sex. The ref given for the Mondongo story also appears to say that Mondongo's choice of buscuits as a medium for making a series of pornographic images was motivated by other considerations and not by asserting some kind of a special link between buscuits and sex. The ref says: "Things stink and no wonder Mondongo has even thought of making a work from out their own faeces. They didn’t, they chose biscuits, this time, equally heinous since they are what the wives of the military would have nibbled on at tea-time as they told stories to their ‘adopted’ children." Again, I don't really see in any of these references a specific discussion of relationship between sex and biscuits as a coherent subject. Overall, the entire subject of the article seems to be an artificially created one to me. Nsk92 (talk) 22:21, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

- There is only one reference in the article (which is not even an in-line citation at that), to a website that may or may not pass WP:RS. In any event, notability of the subject is not established and would need to be demonstrated first by references to multiple independent reliable sources. The article cannot go to the main page in its current form. Nsk92 (talk) 15:00, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't think it's neccesary for an article to be perfect to be on the front page, but since not even the hook has a citation in the article, this one clearly doesn't qualify. It doesn't meet the rules for DYK selection. - Mgm| 16:41, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Note: These reviews were made while I was still editing (I wanted to DYK it before I forgot). I have addressed these issues (in spades) so I would like to get this re-accessed. I've left notes on their talk pages. Is there anything else I should do? Maury Markowitz (talk) 02:06, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- There are some references in the article now, but the entry still does not satisfy the DYK requirements. First, according to the official DYK rules, there must be a sentence in the article, with an in-line citation in that very sentence, corresponding to the hook's statement. I do not see an in-line citation of this sort in the article. Second, I still have considerable doubts about notability of the subject of the article, at least in terms of such notability being demonstrated by the references given in the article itself. Notability needs to be demonstrated by detailed and specific coverage in independent reliable sources, as defined by WP:V and WP:RS. Looking at the refs in the article, I see a number of refs that appear to fall short of these requirements. For example, ref no 2 (Arendt), refs no 7 and 8 (Wallace) are references to posts at personal webpages of private individuals, definitely falling short of WP:RS. Ref no 3(Obsolete Technology Homepage), also points to a private website maintained by a single individual, a technology enthusiast, according to that website's mission statement. Again, most likely does not pass WP:RS, at least not for DYK purposes. Nsk92 (talk) 15:17, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Schiehallion experiment
Template:DYKsuggestion at 13:55, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- Date and length verified, an interesting new article. However, I have a number of issues with the hook. First, it mentions too many distinct facts that (seem to) appear in different places in the article; a more straightforwardly structured hook is always preferable. The bits about validation of Newton's gravitational laws and about the contour lines are both problematic. In the background section there is a general discussion which does indicate that Newton's gravitational laws provided motivation for the experiment. However, there is no specific place in the article which says that the experiment itself did in fact validate Newton's laws. Moreover, I would be rather skeptical of making such general claims and putting them in the hook. A single experiment almost never conclusively validates a theory, especially a complex theory like Newton's law of universal gravitation. What an individual experiment can do is to provide supporting evidence for a theory. Validation as such is achieved by consensus of the scientists working in a particular area and usually occurs over an extended period of time. The bit about contour lines is also problematic. As the article itself points out, technically this was a rediscovery, with at least two prior works doing something similar. A DYK hook is not the right place for dealing with complicated matters of assigning scientific credit of this kind. It is better to write a hook that is more factual and straightforward, e.g. something simply saying that the experiment was used to estimate the density and the mass of the Earth and the value of the gravitational constant G. (These statements would need explicit in-line citations in the article, however). Nsk92 (talk) 17:10, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- The article has been edited somewhat since this, and I have offered an alternative hook below. Responding to your points above:
- It is difficult to divorce the attempt to measure the density of the Earth with the fact that it also yielded contour lines; this is the most interesting thing about the Schiehallion experiment, and without this, it simply becomes just another 18th century science experiment. Bill Bryson, for example, brings the two facts together in A Short History of Nearly Everything.
- I have now added information in the article that the experiment was considered validating evidence for Newton's law of gravitation. The word "conclusively", I should point out, did not appear in the original hook, only that the experiment "provided validation".
- As you say, the article explains that this was not the first example of a scientist using lines to join points of equal value. It was however the first published use of lines marking points of equal land height—contour lines, as opposed to isobaths and isogons—and the following references all employ language to the effect of "Hutton invented contour lines":
- British society for the History of Mathematics
- Heritage Scotsman
- 230 Years of Geophysics: Schiehallion and the Density of the Earth, Smallwood, University of Edinburgh
- Weighing the World Edwin Danson
- John Muir trust, the owners of Schiehallion

- RSM Simplified: Optimizing Processes Using Response Surface Methods for Design of Experiments
- The Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1985
- A Scottish paper landscape, Christopher Fleet (National Library of Scotland) and Charles W J Withers (University of Edinburgh)
- And these are media that have whole pages at their disposal to make their point. I'm not sure that, with only 200 characters at mine, that the words "invented contour lines" is too far a stretch. I have however modified my wording slightly below to say "gave cartographers contour lines"
- Anyway, here is the alternative hook:
- ALT: ... that the 1774 Schiehallion experiment calculated the density of the Earth, provided evidence for Newton's law of universal gravitation and gave cartographers contour lines? — BillC 06:00, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- OK, thanks a lot for the explanation, you mostly convinced me. Date and length of the article verified, online refs verified. The hook sounds a little awakward (the part about contour lines), but I think it is OK. Nsk92 (talk) 16:13, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! Should anyone prefer a trimmed hook, I have provided a second one below that omits the middle part about Newton;'s Law (I'm really loathe to drop the part about contour lines):
- ALT2: ... that the 1774 Schiehallion experiment to calculate the density of the Earth also made the first use of contour lines to represent height? — BillC 01:28, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

- ALT2: ... that after the American E86 cluster bomb was canceled its E14 sub-muntion was altered to deliver yellow fever mosquitoes and rat fleas?
- This alternate hook could go two ways, it could be a double hook, but you'd probably have to let E86 cluster bomb slide, because by my count its only about 1,480 characters, and I really don't think I can get any more out of it without being wordy and ridiculous. Unless someone else has another source, of course. Alternatively, this hook could be used without E86 cluster bomb bolded as one of the hook articles like so:

Does this fall foul of "Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided"? The term negro has negative associations or connotations (where's LinguistatLarge for the right terminology?). I don't like to play censor, but this one has a bit of stingyness that I'm not sure is appropriate. I might even leave out the International Brigades. I don't think most people know what that is. - what about: ... that Paul Verner (pictured) fled Germany's nationalists and fought as a volunteer in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War?
- My worry is that saying East German is strange since we're talking about what is now Germany and what was Germany when he was fighting for Spain. Eastern Germany was inbetween. Can't they read the article to find out that he was an East German politician? I'm okay with adding he's a socialist too, although the "International" birgades is a bit of a tip off. - Well, actually, it did make sense to me :) All species in genus Crepidotus have a similar morphology (i.e., resembling the x-sectioned brain as you aptly describe it), so it would be somewhat illogical to have the epithet refer specifically to this characteristic for this particular species. My guess is that the naming author was particularly impressed by this fungus' ability to properly orient itself for optimal spore dispersal - common in species with 'typical' mushrooms shape, but not so much in species that have one surface directly attached to the growing surface.
- Hook, citation, date and length OK. As to the controversy above, the hook fact is sourced to a reliable academic source, which is all we need. The published opinion of experts is to be preferred over the ad hoc conjecture of on editor. Sandstein 07:49, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Esix Snead
Template:DYKsuggestion at 21:54, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think a tweak may be needed because four is a lot in "two brief appearances" and the "only" seems to minimize the achievement. In fact I would suggest (ALT 1)... that baseball player Esix Snead had 507 stolen bases in nine minor league seasons and four more in two brief appearances in the major leagues with the New York Mets? Four is a lot in two appearances, but he's no Mookie Wilson. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:49, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- I was trying to emphasize that he had a very substantial number of stolen bases in the minors, but never really made it as a major leaguer. The "but only" was intended in comparison to the number stolen in the minors not to minimize stealing 4 bases in 18 major league games, which would be about 35 in a full 162-game season. I wonder if "and" instead of "but only" loses that hookiness? Alansohn (talk) 21:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- How about something like (ALT 2)... that baseball player Esix Snead had 507 stolen bases in nine minor league seasons compared with four in two brief appearances in the major leagues with the New York Mets? faithless () 23:23, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- That captures more of what I was looking for, but how about reversing it as (ALT 3)... that baseball player Esix Snead had four stolen bases in two brief appearances in the major leagues with the New York Mets, but stole 507 bases in nine minor-league seasons? Alansohn (talk) 18:30, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that switching them around makes it read better. I do have a minor quibble, though; the word "but" still makes it read as though we're passing some sort of judgment on his accomplishments, IMHO. To me it reads like, "...Snead wasn't very good in the majors, but he did really well in the minors!" I think using "compared to" takes our opinion out of it entirely and lets the reader make up their own mind (lets them make the comparison for themselves, if you will). So my suggestion would be (ALT 4) ... that baseball player Esix Snead had four stolen bases in two brief appearances in the major leagues with the New York Mets compared to 507 in nine minor-league seasons? faithless () 19:33, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
<outdent> I'm a little confused. The original hook says 4 stolen bases in 2 brief appearances. Then there is mention of 18 games? How many games did he play in? If he stole 4 bases in 2 appearances I don't see a quibble, I think we just go with the original hook and replace the word "but" with the word "and". It's clear he didn't make it in the majors if he's only had 2 appearances. Isn't the whole point that he's notable for a zillion minor league and a few in the major league, why are we but-butting? I would also take out the word brief. Why were his appearances brief? The original hook is fine assuming he had 2 appearances, we just replace but with and. We don't have to explain why his career in the majors was short. People can read the article.ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:28, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I guess the question is what is meant by "appearances". Snead was called up to the majors twice, getting into 17 games the first time and one the 2nd. Appearances here doesn't (or shouldn't, anyway) mean games played. But I am not sure that the number of call ups to the majors he had is really relevant to the hook. So it seems to me that the following would appropriately contrast his major and minor league stolen base record without introducing confusion as to what is meant by "appearances", because 4 stolen bases in 2 games would be a lot: (ALT 5)... that baseball player Esix Snead stole 507 bases in the minor-leagues but had just four stolen bases in the major leagues? Or else maybe something like: (ALT 6)... that baseball player Esix Snead had four stolen bases in 18 major league games, but stole 507 bases in nine minor-league seasons? - Currently has a {{notability}} tag. Sandstein 17:40, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
- I am not sure about notability (although the case does have a WP:BLP1E and WP:NOT#NEWS feel to it and the entry cannot be approved for DYK with a notability tag still in it), but I think this entry is unsuitable for DYK on other grounds. One of the official DYK rules says "Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided." This article (and the hook) focuses almost entirely on the negative aspects associated with the subject, namely his fraud conviction and the pardon controversy. Given that almost all the coverage available is about that, it is hard to imagine this article being reconfigured into something more balanced, so I do not think this entry is or can be made suitable for DYK. Perhaps WP:ITN is a better place for it, but I don't think we can use it here at DYK. Nsk92 (talk) 18:20, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

- Upon inspection I notice the lasso claim is uncited and seems a bit of a stretch (it's perhaps not exactly a lasso action). I think a cited bit supporting a carniverous fungi DYK hook would be just fine. ChildofMidnight (talk) 09:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've added another (online) citation (+ link to PDF of article) for the lasso action, and removed quotes from hook. Sasata (talk) 17:45, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- The citation does use the word lasso to describe the ring swelling action that traps prey (one of five methods) these nifty fungi use. It doesn't meet my definition of a lasso action (where's the throw?) but if you don't think carniverous fungi is exciting enough, I can live with it. :) Also, the introduction should be expanded to reflect teh article contents. It's kind of short.ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:55, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Bernard McMahon
Template:DYKsuggestion at 16:59, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
- The source doesn't make it quite clear to me that Jefferson was responsible. It says McMahon was entrusted with the seeds, and then "Jefferson insisted that these new discoveries were the property of the expedition and of the federal government, so McMahon was forced, perhaps rightfully so, to grow these novelties under restriction in a quarantine-like situation." But this seems compatible with the reading that once he'd been given the seeds, Jefferson set the quarantine requirement on him. It's possible I've missed something from another part of the source, though. Olaf Davis | Talk 09:52, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- I had thought "Beginning in 1806 McMahon was trusted with seeds and plants collected from the Lewis and Clark expedition" would be direct enough: I've added a second Monticello reference that also contains the statement. If the source didn't quite make it clear, perhaps the link wasn't clicked on; footnote text highlighted in purple can be clicked on to read on-line text, which is an intrinsic part of the footnote. --Wetman (talk) 14:37, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Coat of arms of Singapore
Template:DYKsuggestion at 02:24, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
- Length and date are OK, and the article is interesting, but I strongly recommend writing another hook. The current hook is incomprehensible (and hence uninteresting) to me as a layperson because I don't know what the Darjah Utama Temasek and the Sijil Kemuliaan are, or what an "achievement" of a coat of arms is (presumably heraldic jargon?). Also, the verb "uses" is in the singular despite having two subjects; it should be in the plural ("use"). Maybe the following would work?
- "... that the Singapore coat of arms is reproduced in full on two national awards, the Darjah Utama Temasek and Sijil Kemuliaan?"

Pennsylvania Route 368
Template:DYKsuggestion at 20:37, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Your reference for the 1928 creation is a 1928 map, which only means it was assigned by 1928. Similarly, we know that the new alignment is shown as complete on a 1935 map, which means it was complete by then if PennDOH didn't jump the gun. But its non-presence on the 1934 map means that, if PennDOH never forgot to add a minor realignment, it was opened in either 1934 or 1935. Also, unless the 1934 and 1935 maps are more detailed than the 1930 map, there's no basis for assuming that it used Perryville Road. Finally, this is not interesting. Roads are realigned all the time, and there's no evidence here that this was anything but a normal realignment, built about eight years after the route was designated (and some more years after the road was first added to the state highway system as LR 311). --NE2 21:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- Its a bad wording. I guess I am an idiot at this too. I mean construction and paving, not realignments.Mitch32 21:09, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
- It's still extremely common for a route, in the early days of state highway systems, to have not been paved when it was first designated. Maybe you could say something about how it no longer meets its "parent" (better term for that?) due to a truncation that eliminated an overlap? --NE2 21:53, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not sure about Misplaced Pages politics, but it was McChrystal's job to catch terrorists, and most people would consider his success to be a "credit". I don't think the phrase goes out of its way to take sides. Art LaPella (talk) 03:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

- While that's his job, this hook implies he went out and killed Zarqawi himself, which is not the case. The article and references confirm that Bush "credited" him with killing Zarqawi, but it just meant he commanded the forces that did, he didn't actually kill anyone, and it has probably been a long time since he did (if he ever did). - Citation was added with the sentence about the two 90-minute westerns as requested. The citation that was there was for the whole first paragraph, not just the particular sentence.Billy Hathorn (talk) 01:39, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- OK the info about the westerns has been verified with the assumption of good faith, as it is an offline source. However, the information about Randy Boone's relations to Daniel Boone is sourced to a site with very questionable reliability, http://www.hollywoodteenmovies.com/PAT%20BOONE.html. I would find something a bit more reliable. If not, then you should probably remove the info from the hook; that would work, although the hook would not be as interesting. Dabomb87 (talk) 02:49, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes-no question
- ... that when computer scientists and others treat questions such as "Would you like chicken or roast beef for dinner?" as yes-no questions they are exploiting a real linguistic ambiguity in such questions?
Jonathan de Boyne Pollard (talk) 20:59, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- If you improve the referencing in the first paragraph of How such questions are posed, I think we could do a more interesting hook mentioning the cross-linguistic variation in how yes-no questions are posed. —Politizer /contribs 21:17, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- It's already fully referenced. Cruttenden supports the entire paragraph. Jonathan de Boyne Pollard (talk) 21:35, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- For DYK purposes, we rarely accept instances where a single reference "covers" an entire paragraph; we require that there be an inline citation next to each fact. For example, in the paragraph you and I are looking at in this article, the content of that footnote is ambiguous: it's at the very end of the paragraph, so a reader doesn't know if it's "covering" the whole paragraph or just the comment "Such questions are labelled declarative questions, and are also available as an option in those languages that have other ways of asking yes-no questions" (or, for that matter, the comment about intonation in Jakaltek). These referencing issues are exacerbated more, even, in cases like this, where the references are offline books so the reader can't easily check for himself to see what's in there. Therefore, a hook talking about the cross-linguistic variation or listing examples of other languages would not be accepted right now, with the reference the way it is; there would have to be separate inline citations for each example given in that paragraph (even if all the inline citations are all to the same source). —Politizer /contribs 21:43, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- Then it's your own self-imposed loss. You make daft hoops to jump through, that actually make articles look terrible, and you'll end up with no-one jumping through those hoops. Such overlinking is patently unnecessary for actual readers, who don't need umpteen links to the same citation in a single paragraph. If DYK (or, more properly, the individual people at DYK such as you) require such silliness, then that is simply bureaucracy, rather than anything aimed at making a good article. You'll find plenty of discussion about this dotted around Misplaced Pages on people's talk pages and elsewhere, where it has been repeated time and again that one doesn't need a link to a citation on every sentence, and that it is a quite reasonable and normal idea that links to citations at the end of a paragraph cover that entire paragraph. I suggest that you start with Misplaced Pages talk:Footnotes/Archive 4#Every sentence should have a reference?, Misplaced Pages:Featured article candidates/Ailanthus altissima, the several times this is listed at Misplaced Pages talk:Citing sources/Archive Index, and this. Your bureaucracy here isn't to the betterment of the actual Misplaced Pages articles themselves. Jonathan de Boyne Pollard (talk) 22:39, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- As you wish. All I'm saying is, when you have a paragraph like that and then a single book reference at the end, if I as the reader don't have access to the book then I have no idea whether it's 5 (or however many) sentences all covered by one reference, or 4 bits of unreferenced OR followed by one other sentence that happens to have a reference. —Politizer /contribs 22:46, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- DYK requires that the DYK hook be inline cited in the article for the article to appear on the Main Page. The inline discussions mentioned above likely do not address the circumstances where the article will be linked from the Main Page, which receives 3,000,000+ hits a day. -- Suntag ☼ 04:22, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Generally when I use a single source for an entire paragraph I just note that this is the case in citation itself, I did something like that on 1st Gas Regiment. I am inclined to agree that if the fact is easily verifiable and the submitting editor goes that extra length to make sure a reader knows that the entire graf is cited to that one source then it really shouldn't be a problem for DYK purposes.--IvoShandor (talk) 05:03, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with you, but in this case the fact isn't easily verifiable; the paragraph is a list of several examples, which in theory could come from anywhere, and the reference at the end of the paragraph is an offline source so most readers have no way to check. —Politizer /contribs 05:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- A simple solution is a note in the citation that it is for all examples. Offline really hasn't a thing to do with it, as most readers in the western world would have easy access to a local or university library, while its not as easily verifiable (being offline), it's still not difficult. If a citation is truly redundant there isn't much of a point in demanding multiple cites, especially if it could easily be solved with a note in the actual citation itself, as I did on the gas regiment article. Just my thoughts. --IvoShandor (talk) 06:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC) Not that I even think this is that big of a deal or anything, if it were me I would just add the citation, because who cares? It's Misplaced Pages, but if we can make it easier for nominators, we should.--IvoShandor (talk) 06:18, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- As near as I can tell, the hook doesn't come from the Cruttenden supported paragraph. It comes from Greg W. Scragg (1996). Problem Solving with Computers. Since the source was presented in the article as off line, Jonathan could have made the hook a little easier to verify through the wording in the article text. -- Suntag ☼ 07:39, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I was just suggesting that we could do another hook if the creator improved the referencing in one paragraph; that's what started this. —Politizer /contribs 12:49, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think Jonathan took your above 21:43, 21 December 2008 post to mean that DYK wouldn't accept the original hook unless Jonathan added an inline reference on the end of each sentence in the Cruttenden supported paragraph. It looks like this thread resulted from a missundersdanding. (It would really be ironic if the missundersdanding were from a linguistic ambiguity.). -- Suntag ☼ 13:05, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- I located the "chicken or roast beef for dinner" quote in this source. The hook should be revised to say something like "when computer scientists and others intentionally treat". The phrase "linguistic ambiguity" should appear some place in the article. The idea that "all" computer scientist are "exploiting" the ambiguity when they treat the question as a yes-no question is based on author Greg W. Scragg's opinion about computer scientist. However, it is presented as a fact in the hook. -- Suntag ☼ 07:16, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
