There is a 100+ student choir, a division 1 band, and a division 1 orchestra. This year, both the 8th grade band and orchestra achieved the high distinction of getting all 1's at the regional MSBOA festivals. By getting 1's they are elligable to compete at the state level at state festival. A friendly rivalry exists between the band and the orchestra, one side bragging about its accomplishments to the other side, and making a case that they are the better group and trying to outdo the other. The two groups, dubbed the "orchdorks" and the "bandgeeks", both are extremely talented and many of the budding musicians have been accepted into the extremely competitive All-State Band, or All-State Orchestra. | |||

Kinawa is very strong academically. The students score very high on standardized tests, such as the MEAP and the ACT Explore. Some have even taken the SAT and the regular ACT, and scored well enough to attend the HATS Off breakfast, a special breakfast to honor the top 200 middle school student scorers on the SAT and ACT in Michigan. Students participate in the school geography bee, and the Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge every year. Some students also participate in Knowledge Master Open, a academic competition. There is also a student council, which organizes numerous fundraising events for various charities and organizations.
