I was wondering if it was possible to make a bot that would scrape the Google News page (news.google.com) every hour and list the articles in a template, perhaps ] (which could also be used as a watchlist)? Perhaps it would be redundant, since many of them would appear in {{tl|popular articles}} anyway, but it's just an idea I had. If it's too much of a , I will understand. :This is a great idea! I have created ] <small>(as there is a ])</small>; see also ]. This will be a nice watchlist to cope with heavy ]s (Google News' effect is up to 10 times stronger). --- Best regards, ] (]) 03:01, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Edit summary on fr

Hi, please change the edit summary you are using on french wikipedia (Misplaced Pages python library) to something like interwiki, thanks. Akkeron (talk) 18:14, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Duplicating transcluded interwiki links

In Numbo3-bot added two interwiki links which were already transcluded from Misplaced Pages:Help desk/Header so they got a double listing (and Misplaced Pages talk:Help desk#new Hebrew/Yiddish (?) interwiki links says they were messing up the archiving bot). PrimeHunter (talk) 11:19, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Answered there! --- Sorry; best regards, Numbo3 (talk) 12:09, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Bot blocked again

Template:Popular articles

Can your bot please exclude favicon.ico from the list? For some reason whatever counts the article views is counting requests for http://en.wikipedia.org/favicon.ico, which is the little "W" logo that the browser displays in the address bar, as views of that article. That file is obviously going to be popular as nearly all browsers will load it, but it is not an article, and favicon.ico, which is a redirect, likely gets very few views and certainly isn't anywhere near the top 15 or even 1500. Thanks -- Gurch (talk) 11:29, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Done, thanks for this hint. I saw this already, but thought this would be temporarily (like other weird stuff like that, e.g. "404 error"). "Favicon.ico" will be hidden with the next update. -- Regards, Numbo3 (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
A minimum of 850 hits is kind of arbitrary. How about changing it to 1,000? Gary King (talk) 21:48, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
This is for making sure that only on extremely rare occasions there are not even 15 items reached. I will improve this in future (either fixed top 100 or making it variably for each hour), but will have to change the analysing structure then (efficiency issue at the moment). -- Best regards, Numbo3 (talk) 00:58, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Bot source code?

Hello. The idea behind your bot is very interesting. I was wondering whether you can publish its source code in behalf of the common benefit. I've been working on pywikipedia for almost 10 months, and such bot will inspire me some new helpful ideas (basicly for Arabic Misplaced Pages).--OsamaK 15:51, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure which source code (for what task) you mean, Template:Popular_articles? What functionality in detail is your point of interest? -- Kind regards, Numbo3 (talk) 23:16, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

An idea for a template similar to Template:Popular articles

I love Template:Popular articles (and the ability to use it as a watchlist, and I noticed that Numbo3-bot updates Template:Popular articles every hour. Thank you for that bot.

The Signpost has mentioned several times , that Google News now links to Misplaced Pages articles.

For example, right now Google News links to the articles:

  • 2009 flu pandemic
  • 2009 U.S. Open Golf Championship
  • Iranian presidential election, 2009
  • Kate Gosselin +
  • Kodachrome +
  • Mark Sanford
  • Neda Soltani +
  • Speaker of the British House of Commons election, 2009
  • Voting Rights Act

..and several of those currently appear in Template:Popular articles (the one's I marked with '+' signs). I see there are also Misplaced Pages links on other categories (for example, Entertainment links to Kate Gosselin+, Alice in Wonderland (2010 film)+, and Matthew McConaughey).

I was wondering if it was possible to make a bot that would scrape the Google News page (news.google.com) every hour and list the articles in a template, perhaps Template:On Google News (which could also be used as a watchlist)? Perhaps it would be redundant, since many of them would appear in {{popular articles}} anyway, but it's just an idea I had. If it's too much of a hassle, I will understand. Thanks again for your work. --Pixelface (talk) 02:48, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

This is a great idea! I have created Template:Linked on Google News (as there is a Template:On Google News); see also Misplaced Pages:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Numbo3-bot_3. This will be a nice watchlist to cope with heavy Slashdot effects (Google News' effect is up to 10 times stronger). --- Best regards, Numbo3 (talk) 03:01, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
