* It's only a ''cleanup'' project if you are actually ''adding references''. Stamping articles with tags actually makes a bigger mess, since you are leaving redundant instructions for someone ''else'' to do work. Misplaced Pages:CiterSquad is a category based project. Category:Articles lacking sources (Erik9bot) is populated by a bot, and contains articles appear to have neither a reference nor an unreferenced tag. Per Misplaced Pages:Verifiability The threshold for inclusion in Misplaced Pages is verifiability, not truth. "Verifiable" in this context means that any reader should be able to check that material added to Misplaced Pages has already been published by a reliable source. Misplaced Pages:Verifiability is one of Misplaced Pages's core content policies. The others include Misplaced Pages:No original research and Misplaced Pages:Neutral point of view.
The primary goal of this project is to check that the article is unreferenced, and if the article is appropriate for Misplaced Pages, add the template {{BLP unsourced}}, {{unreferenced}}, to encourage editors to reference the article. If there are poorly formatted references in the article, format them per Misplaced Pages:Citing sources or place the {{Refimprove}}. Community consensus requires that unreferenced articles be checked by a human before an unreferenced tag is added to an article.
The secondary goal an ensure that articles meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability, by including at least one reliable published (online or offline) reference. The project Misplaced Pages:Unreferenced articles has this goal, articles with {{unreferenced}} are reviewed, based on the length of time the article has been tagged.
The Bot
The category Category:Articles lacking sources (Erik9bot) is populated by a bot named Erik9bot, it finds articles that don't appear to have a reference, and the article does not have an unreferenced tag. Weekly it will check to see if the article has been referenced or tagged as unreferenced and remove from the category as appropriate. The category is a hidden category.
The tasks
- Articles in category high count in July 16, 2009 was 30,805, as of August 1, 2009 count is approximately 29,625.

- Check for any references, unreferenced tag or under referenced tag, if it has been referenced or tagged for more then a week report at User talk:Erik9bot
- If there are poorly formatted references in the article, format them per Misplaced Pages:Citing sources or add {{Refimprove}}, {{citation style}}
- Add the template {{BLP unsourced}}, {{unreferenced}}, to encourage editors to reference the article Or
