This page documents an English Misplaced Pages policy. It describes a widely accepted standard that editors should normally follow, though exceptions may apply. Changes made to it should reflect consensus. | Shortcuts |
This page in a nutshell: As a shortcut around AfD for uncontroversial deletions, an article can be proposed for deletion, though once only. If no one contests the proposal within seven days, the article may be deleted by an administrator. |

Proposed deletion |
Proposed deletion is a process used for nominating articles for uncontroversial deletion, and deleting such articles after 7 days if no objections are raised. Its purpose is to reduce the load on the Articles for deletion process, for cases where deletable articles fail to meet the criteria for speedy deletion.
- See Category:Proposed deletion for the listing of all articles currently proposed for deletion.' An automated summary table can be found at WP:PRODSUM.
Process
Proposed deletion is done in three steps:
- An article is nominated when an editor reviews the article and adds the {{prod}} tag to the top of the article.
- If any user objects to the deletion (usually by removing the {{prod}} tag), the proposal is aborted and may not be re-proposed.
- The article is first checked and then deleted by an administrator 7 days after nomination.
Nominating
Prior to nomination, editors should:
- Review the article's history to confirm that it has not been recently vandalized.
- Confirm that the article is eligible for proposed deletion by checking that it has:
- not previously been proposed for deletion, and
- not been undeleted, and
- not been and is not being discussed at AfD
- Note that only articles, lists, and disambiguation pages may be deleted using the Proposed deletion process.
To nominate for propose deletion, editors should:
- Add the
{{prod|reason for proposed deletion}}
to the top of the main article page, providing a clear and non-generic reason. - Provide an edit summary that clearly indicates that the article has been proposed for deletion. Do not mark the edit as minor.
- Consider adding the article to your watchlist.
- Consider notifying the article's creator and significant contributors by adding the {{PRODWarning}} tag to their talk page.
To second a proposed deletion, editors should consider:
- Consider adding a {{Prod-2}} tag to indicate your opinion.
- Consider adding or modifying an {{Oldprodfull}} tag on the article's talk page.
Objecting
To object to and therefore prevent a proposed deletion, remove the {{prod}} tag from the article. You are encouraged to also:
- explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion, either in the edit summary or on the talk page.
- notify the editors involved in the PROD by placing a {{Deprod}} tag on their user talk page.
- add or modify an {{Oldprodfull}} tag on the article's talk page, to prevent renomination under Proposed deletion.
- consider improving the article to address the concerns raised.
If the article has already been deleted, please follow the Deletion review process. If undeleted, add the {{Oldprod}} tag to the Discussion page.
Conflicts
ShortcutIf anyone, including the article's creator, removes a {{prod}} tag from an article, do not put it back, even if the tag was apparently removed in bad faith. This excludes removals that are clearly not an objection to deletion, such as page blanking.
- If you still believe that the article needs to be deleted, list it on Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion
- If Proposed deletion fails, the article may be taken to Articles for Deletion for further discussion
- if it was, then the Articles for deletion process must be used instead. If the reason given is valid then the article will be deleted
- If it has been, it is not eligible for deletion by this process and should be kept or sent to AfD
- If you feel that the article should be deleted, but not without discussion, you may nominate the article for an Articles for deletion debate
- If you feel the article should be re-deleted, list it on Articles for deletion
Note that:
- The addition of an AfD tag is equivalent to contesting the proposed deletion.
- The {{prod}} tag may be restored if replaced with a speedy deletion tag.
Other deletion processes have priority over proposed deletion:
- An article flagged for both proposed deletion and AfD should be dealt with at AfD, and the {{prod}} tag should be removed.
- Appropriate alternatives such as Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems or Misplaced Pages:Criteria for speedy deletion take precedence. However, when tagging a proposed deletion candidate for speedy deletion, the proposed deletion tag should be left in place in case the speedy deletion is rejected. (Note: a rejected speedy candidate is still eligible for proposed deletion, but a rejected AfD candidate is not.)
- Any deletion via this process which is taken to deletion review is implicitly a contested deletion, and the article may therefore be immediately restored by any administrator without discussion.
- Any article deleted via this process and then recreated is not subject to speedy deletion under criterion G4, as recreation is a way of contesting the proposed deletion.
Deleting
Prior to deletion, administrators should check the article, its history, and deletion log to confirm that:
- the {{prod}} tag has been in place continuously for at least 7 days
- no objections have been raised on the talk page.
- the article is eligible for proposed deletion: never previously proposed for deletion, never undeleted, and never discussed at AfD.
If you decide to delete the article, provide an informative deletion reason, such as that given by the nominator, not just "expired prod". This is because once the article is deleted, the reason for the {{prod}} is no longer visible to non-administrators. If you are using an automated script, check that it does not leave an inadequate message. To ensure independent judgment, an article should not be deleted by the same person who added the {{prod}} tag.
If you decide not to delete the article, consider editing it to deal with the concerns raised, or nominating the article for deletion on AfD. You should document that it has been contested with an {{Oldprodfull}} on the article's Talk page.
