Famitsu (ファミ通, commonly abbreviated in Japanese kana to Fami), is a Japanese video game magazine published by Enterbrain, Inc. Currently, there are five versions of Famitsu. Weekly Famitsu, Famitsu PS2, Famitsu Xbox, Famitsu Cube and Advance, and Famitsu Wave DVD.
Weekly Famitsu
Weekly Famitsu (週刊ファミ通, Shukan Famitsu) is considered the most respected video game news magazine in Japan. Weekly Famitsu concentrates on video game and reviews, as well as video game industry news. The magazine was originally called Family Computer Tsushin (ファミリーコンピュータ通信, famiriikonpyuutatsushin). Family Computer is the name of Nintendo's eight-bit video game console in Japan (the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the United States), and tsushin is the Japanese word for "news". The first issue was published in 1986. Weekly Famitsu is sold every Friday with a circulation of 800,000 per issue.
Others
Famitsu PS2 is sold every other Friday, with a circulation of 300,000 per issue. Famitsu Xbox is sold on the 30th of every month with a circulation of 150,000 per issue, and Famitsu Cube and Advance is sold on the 24th of every month with a circulation of 200,000 per issue.
Famitsu Wave DVD (ファミ通 Wave DVD) is published monthly. Each magazine includes a DVD disc with video game footage. The DVD disc is NTSC Region 2 encoded. The magazine was originally called GameWave DVD.
At the debut of the PlayStation, PlayStation Tsushin was published, but later the magazine changed its name to Famitsu PS.
Scoring
Famitsu is well known for its harsh grading of current videogames. Video games are graded in Famitsu by a panel of four video game reviewers. Each reviewer gives a score from one to ten (ten being best). The scores of the four reviewers are then added up with a possible score of forty. Famitsu reviewers are unmercifully tough, and it is extremely difficult for a game to receive a perfect score of forty. Famitsu Wave DVD does not grade video games.
Only five games so far have received the absolute score:
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
- Soul Calibur (Namco, for Dreamcast)
- Vagrant Story (Squaresoft, for PlayStation)
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Nintendo, for Nintendo GameCube)
- Nintendogs (Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
Rumors of bribes have surfaced after they gave Shadow the Hedgehog 8, 8, 8, 7,(Shadow is generaly accepted to be garbage.)
