Hawkins was born in Essex in 1962 (in a March 2006 post he wrote that his birthday was on the first day of Lent in 2006. He was brought up in Warwickshire. He now lives in Shrewsbury.
Career
Hawkins' broadcasting career started on a student radio station at Warwick University. He then worked for independent local radio station Mercia Sound before joining BBC Radio 4 in 1984, presenting the News Stand programme. Hawkins has worked for various commercial and BBC local radio stations across the United Kingdom in various roles on both sides of the microphone, including spells as a producer and manager.
In 2002, Hawkins received a silver Sony Radio Academy Silver Award, in the "interactive" category, for his drive time programme The Baldy Brothers on Century FM. He was also highly commended at the BT sponsored Regional News and Current Affairs Awards. Hawkins was one of five people who were shortlisted for the 2006 Sony Radio Academy Speech Broadcaster of the Year Award. Hawkins is a keen supporter of Twitter, using it to interact with listeners during the show. His producer and assistant also use Twitter when the show is on-air. Hawkins was persuaded to try Twitter after finding Facebook not to his liking.
Hawkins has also worked for a disability-rights group and as a newspaper journalist, hotel restaurant pianist, and stagehand; and at one point ran the coconut shy on Brighton Pier.
