SE Template/Category

First time and I'm sure I broke some rules. I created a category called 'Category:Social engineering (computer security)' and further created a template to more easily add pages that fall under this category. (Template:SE).

Was this done correctly? Lexlex 06:10, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello Lexlex. I just looked at the category and the template, you created. The category seems to be ok. The mistake you made, was the template. We do not use templates, to link to an article or to a category. Other articles of interrest can be listed at "see also" and the category is shown by adding ]for example. The template, you created would direct to a project. Projects are groups of users, taking care of a special subject area. As far as I know, there is no Project Security exploits. Please ask the administrators to delete this template. You can do so by writing {{Db-author}} on the talkpage of the template. Thw1309 07:09, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Fanta

Hi Lexlex. The Wiki guidelines and advise are that political flags are not used in contentious situations. You were advised to discuss the matter with the other Fanta editors. I have removed the flag that is causing some editors a problem. I am not saying that the flag should not be there (though my own view is that it should not), but that you would do better to discuss it with the other editors given the history of disagreement with the use of the flag in that article coupled with Wiki guidance that in such situations such a flag is best not used. I am sorry you misinterpreted my advise. Regards SilkTork 19:30, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello SilkTork, Gosh I'm not sure what to say. I believe I did follow your advice, asked for comments and received nothing in over a week. What length of time do you feel is reasonable for a cooling off period? Again, while I understand that it can be a sensitive issue with many people I am perplexed at the lack of honest response and am curious how you think this will play out. No one has yet to propose any timeline or solution - other than removal and complaining. Frankly, current revisionism and political correctness make me more uncomfortable than a 60 year old regime's flag and I am willing to gently and carefully tread down this road to an honest completion. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lexlex 01:19, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Fanta flag debate

There has been some discussion and edit warring over the use of the 1940 German flag in an article on the Fanta product which was originally formulated in Germany in 1940. A debate has opened for those interested: Talk:Fanta#Debate_on_use_of_flag_in_Fanta_article. SilkTork 10:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:WesternElectric.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:WesternElectric.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Misplaced Pages articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Misplaced Pages:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Misplaced Pages policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Alpta 17:41, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Image:WesternElectric.jpg

I have tagged Image:WesternElectric.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Misplaced Pages policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. Alpta 22:54, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:WesternElectric.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:WesternElectric.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 16:05, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Your move of circumcision

I've reverted your move of circumcision to 'male genital cutting'. The latter may be consistent with female genital cutting, but the former is consistent with language used in the real world. As WP:UCN states, "Except where other accepted Misplaced Pages naming conventions give a different indication, use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things." Fair use rationale for Image:StarWarsHS.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:StarWarsHS.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Your Redirect of Circumcison

I reverted your edit to Circumcison as per Misplaced Pages:Redirect#Spellings, misspellings, tenses and capitalizations. You had it directed to Genital modification and mutilation; however, now it is redirected to Circumcision. A link to your edit can be seen here. Please take the time to read that article to see how to properly use redirects. The Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia, not a place for you to insert your personal opinion through various edits. If you continue editing articles in such a manner, you could be blocked for vandalism. Please stop, and consider improving rather than damaging the work of others. Speedy deletion of Allison Smith (announcer)

A tag has been placed on Allison Smith (announcer) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you.  Chzz  ►  03:55, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Susan Berkley

I have nominated Susan Berkley, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Susan Berkley. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?  Chzz  ►  22:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Global warming/FAQ.

Are you aware of why this entry is wrong . Or did you remove it for other reasons? --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 17:09, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I had a suspicion it was not the correct format but also noticed that another question had referenced a document that covered it - so reverted it. If it had remained, what should I have done here or how should I have entered the question?Lexlex (talk) 18:38, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
You can't do anything wrong with the formatting, other editors will just correct it for you. Thats what collaborative editing is...
No - i was referring to why the CO2 doesn't come from the Oceans. And why your questions answer would be a negative, instead of what you might infer by common sense. --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 19:22, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Kim, I honestly cannot figure out why it is claimed that CO does not come from oceans, because that seems to be the most likely place. While I understand that a study was done which found that the CO concentration in the oceans did not decrease while the concentration in the air increased, simple physics do not jibe with that conclusion. Warm water is not physically capable of holding as much CO as cold water. The ocean water is warmer so it cannot hold as much CO as when it was colder and yet this study says otherwise. Something is not making sense to me. Can you enlighten me? Lexlex (talk) 05:25, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes, of course i can tell you where you go wrong. The trouble here is that you think that it is heat alone that determines the amount of CO2 that is dissolved in water. This is not the case. The determining factor is not the temperature of the water alone - but the pressure of CO2 on the surface of the water, combined with the water temperature. (see Henry's law)
Lets take your soda-bottle example... when you open the bottle - the partial pressure of CO2 on the surface of the soda, is going to be 380ppm (current atmospheric pressure of CO2), and since the soda is super-saturated, it will release CO2 until the point where the dissolved CO2 is in equilibrium with the temperature of the soda and the atmospheric pressure. Since the amount of CO2 in the soda is too small to influence the atmosphere, its only the temperature of the soda that is important.
Lets take the Oceans and the atmospheric content of CO2 and let us assume a constant temperature, with an increase of CO2 content in the atmosphere.... Since the partial pressure of CO2 on the surface of the Ocean increases, it follows that the Oceans will absorb CO2 (to get to a new equilibrium).
Now let us do it the other way around, we have constant level of CO2 in the atmosphere - but instead increase the heat of the Oceans, it follows then that the Oceans will now release CO2, to reach equilibrium. This is what happened during glacial=>interglacial transitions.
Finally we have the real world example, we increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, and at the same time increase the heat of the Oceans. Since the partial pressure of CO2 on the Ocean surface is higher than the equilibrium - then the Oceans must per Henry's law, keep absorbing CO2, until equilibrium is again reached.
Now for the final part. We know that the Oceans are absorbing CO2 - even without considering the above. We know this, because the Oceans are getting more acidic, had the Oceans been releasing CO2 it would have turned more alkaline.
So not only do we have a physical explanation as for why - but we also have a verification of it.
I hope this makes sense. Otherwise please ask. (another interesting verification that our emissions are the reason for the increase is the Suess effect) --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 14:16, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Wow, thanks for your thoughtful reply. I will chew on this and get back to you forthwith. Lexlex (talk) 15:06, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Fanta flag

Hi. We don't use flags that way here, and that wasn't vandalism.--John (talk) 06:10, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi John. You are not really being being clear. I made an edit and you summarily deleted it with no explanation and a flippant phrase. I would consider that vandalism. You have yet to explain your actions other than saying "We" don't use flags "that way" here. Pray tell, who is "we"? Do you represent some group? What is "that way"? Explain your actions please. Lexlex (talk) 23:32, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, we did discuss this at length on the article talk page a while ago and there was no consensus to use the Nazi flag on the article. Then there is the guideline WP:FLAGS that I directed you to. It advises against using flags as decoration in this way; this means that if the flag adds no extra information to the article (as in this case) that we do not use it. "We" in this instance means the community of people who write and edit articles on Misplaced Pages. We decide things by consensus and in this case the consensus is against you. If you are desperate to use the Nazi flag on the Fanta article then I suggest you try to form a consensus for it. Just adding it against consensus isn't likely to succeed. Calling others' good faith edits vandalism is a big no-no too; don't do it. Let me know if you need any other help. --John (talk) 23:52, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Lela Star

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Lela Star, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

fails WP:PORNBIO, no other indication of notability

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Misplaced Pages is not" and Misplaced Pages's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Calligraphers

I take strong issue with Your changing the list of calligraphers. As it was before, any-one could easily use the list to find calligraphers by era or name; now they are in some relatively impenetrable category thing. Wik should be user-friendly, not arcane. Kdammers (talk) 00:15, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Ah. maybe jumped the gun thinking no one would care. I'll revert it and make a proposal in talk. I agree the organization of the category is somewhat impenetrable and needs change, but a manual list is also pretty silly. I'll dig into it automate a list of calligraphers and in the meantime will revert. Lexlex (talk) 02:11, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Hullaballoo Wolfowitz

Just to let you know, if Hullaballoo Wolfowitz wants to remove information from his talk page without responding to it, that's his right as per WP:TALK. Removal of information is taken as an indication the editor has read it, so if HW doesn't want to respond, that's okay by[REDACTED] rules. I reverted your edit replacing the matter . Take care! Dayewalker (talk) 18:37, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I was about to do that myself. My bad. Lexlex (talk) 18:39, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

SIT info

Thank you very much for your feedback. I don't often get this so it is very nice when I do.

I undertsand what you are saying about original research, however anyone in the UK with access to a 'phone can verify what I have said. Do you need a book to tell you the sky is blue? No, you can see it is blue, but thats original research isn't it?

I think it's a very good idea for your article work and suggestions, please go ahead and do it, however I can not find anything online about UK SITs to back up what I am saying, even though it's common sense.

If you can help me any further please do. Please also tell me a bit about yourself. Thanks. --Cexycy (talk) 01:47, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

To add, citing policies is fine, if someone is refusing to follow them, take it it WP:ANI. Telling someone that what they think doesn't matter is uncivil and inappropriate.--Terrillja talk 19:58, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
You're saying personal observations do count here? I'm sorry, but they don't. My tone may be brusque, but I speak the truth. Editor's opinions do not matter in Misplaced Pages. I'm sorry if you don't like it said so plainly, but it is the case. Lexlex (talk) 10:17, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Talk:Scientific opinion on climate change

Thank you for your contributions to the encyclopedia! In case you are not already aware, an article to which you have recently contributed, Scientific opinion on climate change, is on article probation. A detailed description of the terms of article probation may be found at Misplaced Pages:General sanctions/Climate change probation. Also note that the terms of some article probations extend to related articles and their associated talk pages.

The above is a templated message. Please accept it as a routine friendly notice, not as a claim that there is any problem with your edits. Thank you. -- TS 23:51, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
