The 2010 Explosion on Deepwater Horizon drilling rig occurred on April 21, 2010, when personnel from the semisubmersible drilling rig Deepwater Horizon reported fire. The fire reportedly started at 10:00 p.m. CST. The rig is stationed 41 mi (66 km) off the Louisiana coast in the US sector of the Gulf of Mexico. The majority of the 126 member crew is safe but eleven are still missing. Seven were critically injured and hospitalized. Some reports indicate 15 missing. Two of them were air lifted to a trauma center in Mobile, Alabama. US Coast Guard has already launched a rescue operation. Four helicopters, four coast guard boats and one plane are being used for rescue operations.

The drilling rig is owned by Transocean Ltd but is leased by BP.
