Hi! welcome to Misplaced Pages!

Hope you enjoy contributing to Misplaced Pages. Be bold in editing pages. Here are some links that you might find useful:

My wikistalkers

I have a sneaking suspicion that they are either the same person or working together. Most of their contributions appear to be nominating articles that I start.

As it turned out the two were the same along with a third. I am sure there are more. All three personas nominated the same article and the accounts were banned from editing.

New articles

Edith M. Kingdon Gould

Hello Richard, in something that doesn't concern Misplaced Pages but is about Edith Kingdon(1864-1921), I wanted to tell you that on Kingdon's Findagrave.com article you posted a picture in 2003 that's supposed to be Edith Kingdon(the first picture on the article). This is incorrect as it is of Mary Anderson and not Edith Kingdon. The photo below it is correct. At some point maybe it can be corrected. thanks.Koplimek (talk) 08:13, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I will fix it now. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 15:25, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

With thanks for completing the long-overdue merger of Phocomelia syndrome into Phocomelia, and thus helping reduce the proposed merger backlog at WikiProject Medicine. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:05, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Spring ephemerals

I'm not sure why you classified Caltha palustris as a spring ephemeral; Flora of North America (cited there) says "Flowering spring-summer (Apr-Jul)". As for the broader question of whether we should have a category for spring ephemerals, I'd discuss it at WT:PLANTS but it may be kind of hard to draw the line between spring ephemerals (which in a deciduous forest lose their foliage around the time the trees leaf out) and plants which come up in the spring but persist into the summer. Kingdon (talk) 13:40, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, the list I was using had an error on it. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 19:08, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

AfD nomination of List of vaporware

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of vaporware. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Misplaced Pages:Notability and "What Misplaced Pages is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/List of vaporware (2nd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:08, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Regarding your edit to Henry Kissinger

I have raised some concerns about the particular paragraph you inserted at Talk:Henry Kissinger. Your input is welcome - there are some sourcing questions. Best, Ray 01:38, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

McGhee et al. v. Le Sage & Co Inc has been nominated for deletion

I noticed the work you've done on this article and thought you might wish to know a deletion discussion was occurring at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/McGhee et al. v. Le Sage & Co., Inc. - DustFormsWords (talk) 05:36, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Charles Cooper Nott

Hi, I see you redirected this title to the son rather than the father. My guess is that the father is more notable, however I'm not on top of the DAB policies. Is there a good reason to redirect to the son? John Vandenberg 23:38, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:9343786 109306952056.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:9343786 109306952056.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:59, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your great improvements to this article. Some of the BR articles are now at GA status. I sometimes like to imagine editor Groubani smiling down like a proud parent as the seeds he planted develop into useful articles that will help the different nations collaborate and understand each other better. Melville Henry Massue

Could you clarify footnote 1 Ruvigny's right to the title he claimed is very doubtful. His grandfather Captain Lloyd Henry de Ruvynes, an Irishman of French origin, changed his name to "de Massue de Ruvignés", apparently on the strength of his descent from a daughter of Henry de Massue, 1st Marquis de Ruvigny et de Raineval, but it seems likely that the title expired with the death of the first marquis' son in 1720, cf. Ruvigny, The Nobilities of Europe (London, 1909), 116-120 There's a query that this statement might be original research as the source doesn't directly say the same, see the article talk page . Thanks NtheP (talk) 13:55, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

I didn't add that. I may have demoted it to a footnote from the text. I will look and see what I can find, and if I can find a reference will promote the text back into the body of the article. That is also why I am a proponent of using the quote parameter in the reference citations. Anyone can point you to a book or even a page in a book, but unless you have the exact quote you can spend hours trying to figure out if the reference actually supports the text in the article, with an exact quote you can cut and paste it into Google and find the source. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 16:03, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Apologies, from my reading of the edit history I thought you'd introduced the text in the first place. Incidentally

I'm the one who raised the AfD for John Moutray and then someone else nominated all the other articles 'developed' by Moutray2010. I still think John Moutray is non notable. His court martial is the only thing of note and IMO that doesn't make him meet the notability criteria, even after your your helpful edits. His court martial arose from the convoy incident and that is well documented in another article. Moutray's career seems uneventful otherwise and this one incident apart there doesn't seem to be anything else about him. All the other articles nominated I think should stay. I admit I think that Moutray2010 has acted like prat and we have disagreed but I wouldn't nominate articles out of spite for that. He's got some useful sources and if the information can be channelled correctly it should be used, but just at the moment he seems to insist on copy pasting entire documents into articles without any attempt at editing and he seems unwilling to listen to any guidance. NtheP (talk) 21:29, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

John Moutray

I've had a closer look and I've changed my mind and am going to withdraw my AfD. I still think the article is light but the bare minimum is now made out. Where I think it could be expanded greatly is in the reason for the court-martial. I see one of the sources refers to the CM being about making a scapegoat out of him to satisfy the insurance companies. Some more on this would add greatly to the article (and his notability). May 2010

Hello. It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on others' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Misplaced Pages's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. LibStar (talk) 05:05, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

"Canvassing is sending messages to Wikipedians with the intent to inform them about a community discussion. Under certain conditions it is acceptable to notify other editors of ongoing discussions, but messages that are written to influence the outcome rather than to improve the quality of a discussion compromise the consensus building process and may be considered disruptive." (my emphasis added) My message meets the guideline of informing without influencing, cheers. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 15:05, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
That's a pretty selective reading of the relavent guideline. Don't try to tell me you've been unaware this section of the page: Misplaced Pages:CANVASS#Votestacking. Yilloslime C 15:38, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
When you say "Misplaced Pages's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large." Wouldn't that include not nominating the same damn article you previously nominated, once again, because you failed to get it deleted previously? Was consensus already established in the first AFD? You have done that before, and are doing that once again. And as long as everyone who participated in the AFD is contacted, its not canvassing. Also, his message seemed quite neutral to me. And if you are just going to redo the same AFD again, everyone who participated in the last one should be contacted to know you are dragging this up again. Dream Focus 09:24, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
DF, everything you're said would make perfect sense if the first AfD had been closed as "Keep." But it wasn't. The results was "no consensus." To come back a year later and try for a consensus decision is perfectly reasonable.Yilloslime C 15:38, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 13:49, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I love the concept of Wikilawyering, it is one of the most beautiful oxymorons in Misplaced Pages. Its like being charged as a witch in medieval times, if you don't defend yourself you are guilty, and if you defend yourself you are guilty. Misplaced Pages states: "Neutrally worded notifications sent to a few editors are considered 'friendly notices' if they appear intended to improve rather than to influence a discussion." If reciting Misplaced Pages rules is wikilawyering, then I am wikilawyering.

Consider this to be your final warning on the topic: you obviously limited the targets of your message to "editors who have or are thought to have a predetermined point of view or opinion". Next time, it's an indefinite block until you agree to not violate WP:CANVAS again.—Kww(talk) 17:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Please refrain from leaving threats on my user page. This in not the forum for threats. Cheers. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 17:37, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Boxes/templates

Re: this edit. Would you mind removing the box and icon and making it into a normal comment like:

  • Comment/Note to closing admin: This article under discussion has had new information added that addresses concerns raised in this AFD. At this point in the discussion ten additional sources have been added to the article. Spanish language articles from Mexican newspapers and English language sources from Google News Archive. The closing administrator may want to compare the nominated version versus the current version. ~~~~

As you are aware, a very similar template was deleted by consensus a year ago (here), so your use of this box would seem to contravene community norms. I'm not saying you shouldn't say what the box is saying, I'm just asking that you say it in the normal format. ThanksYilloslime C 18:49, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
