Peter Godwin (born in London) was lead singer with the band, Metro, (with Duncan Browne) in the late 1970s and became a successful new wave artist in the 1980s. Metro released three albums internationally: "Metro" (on Sire Records in the USA and Transatlantic in the UK) and "New Love" and "Future Imperfect" (on EMI).
In America, his most well-known song is probably his 1982 "Images of Heaven", which got alternative airplay throughout the 1980s. He also got airplay and MTV rotation with his song, "Baby's In The Mountains". Both songs were hits on the U.S. Billboard Club Play Singles chart in the early 1980s. "Baby's In The Mountains" charted at #4 and was promoted with a video shot in New York by "Californication" director Stephen Hopkins.
"Images of Heaven" and many other tracks by Godwin were produced by Georg Kajanus. The song had two videos made for it. The first featured an "adult" interpretation of the lyrics (with naked models) but was deemed not suitable for broadcast television. Another, more innocuous version was made featuring an attractive, skimpily-clad brunette in a candy bar commercial that Godwin imagined appearing before him in various locations to include his own living room couch and floor. Both were directed and produced by David and Kathy Rose. Godwin's 1983 solo album, Correspondence was issued by Polydor Records.
Godwin's solo recordings were released with some success in over fifty territories worldwide, including Japan and the Far East, Latin and South America, as well as Australasia, North America, Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom.
In 1998, a number of his songs from his time with the band Metro, his early 1980s underground hits, and three new songs were released on CD. The title was Images of Heaven: The Best of Peter Godwin, and it was released on Oglio Records.
Alongside of his recording career, as a songwriter- apart from his writing for Metro and his latest band Nuevo- Peter Godwin has written for and with a variety of international artists including Steve Winwood, David Bowie, Reggie Magloire (Technotronic, Indeep), Duncan Browne, Georg Kajanus (Sailor, Data), Camouflage, Michel Van Dyke (Ruben Cossani), Petia Pavlova, Ronny, Nathalie Gabay and The Drifters.
One song Godwin co-wrote with his band Metro, "Criminal World", was covered by David Bowie on his 1983 album, Let's Dance. Godwin thanked Bowie for covering this song in the liner notes for the Images of Heaven CD.
"Love Is A Shield", co-written with Camouflage, reached #9 in the German singles chart in 1989 and stayed in the charts for over six months. It was also a hit in Argentina. It had further success when it was featured in the 1994 American movie "Twogether", which starred Nick Cassavetes.
Peter also co-wrote two albums with Michel Van Dyke: "Reincarnated" and "Kozmetika". The single "She Comes At The End Of The Day" was a big hit for Michel in Germany in 1993.
More recently, Godwin co-wrote all the songs on the latest Steve Winwood album, Nine Lives, which in 2008 reached #12 in the Billboard US Album Chart. The single from Nine Lives, "Dirty City", features Eric Clapton on guitar.
In 2009 Peter formed a band with Johnson Somerset called Nuevo . Their first album "Sunset Rise" is available on their website www.nuevomusic.com.
