==Personal Life== | |||
At an early age, Van Amstel learned to love ballroom dancing as it gave him the opportunity to express feelings without saying a word, and he also experienced it as therapy to deal with many emotional obstacles throughout my childhood including an alcohol abuse within his family. As a child, Van Amstel was overweight, and he is now involved with the Heart Association promoting a healthy lifestyle, especially through dancing.<ref>http://dancingwithlouis.com/bio/</ref>
Van Amstel is openly gay. Growing up, he was bulled for being gay. When he was 15, his mother reassured him that if he ever felt different, he could talk to her. At the time, he did not know what she meant, but afterwards, he began experimenting and learning about himself, opening up a whole new world to him outside of dancing. When he was 17, he went to Germany and fell in love with a guy. He never said anything, but his mom saw it. She approached him about it, and he simply replied, "Now you know. That's it." Since then, Van Amstel said he's had many boyfriends. He said that he even went on a date with a girl and fell in love with a girl. But he said that in his heart, he's pretty sure he'll end up with a man.<ref>http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/ARTICLE.php?AID=26345</ref>
Van Amstel kept quiet about his sexuality publicly until revealing his boyfriend on ] in 2009. He said he is proud of who he is, but he does not label himself as gay. He believes labeling leads to discrimination and hatred and does not want to be put in a box. His inspiration from ] to stand up for what he believes in has led to him joining equality organizations. He's also used the story weeks in seasons 10 and 11 of ] to express his beliefs about equal rights, bullying, and discrimination. During the story week in ] of ], Van Amstel and his partner ] played an interracial couple who fall in love during the 1960s and have to deal with discrimination. Nash remarked during rehearsal that she "can't imagine how it would feel to not be able to be with somebody that you love" and she would be devastated if she could not be with her boyfriend. Van Amstel replied, "I hear you. I'm still in that boat. We've come a long way, but you've gotta help me fight my battle too." He stated in a live interview with ] the night of her performance that their story meant a lot to him and "everyone should be able to get married."
During the story week in ] of ], Van Amstel and his partner ] celebrated pride and self-happiness while dancing their colorful samba to ]. After their performance, Cho stated that they were trying to end gay suicides and help the gay community. But Van Amstel later remarked that their story was not told correctly at all. He said their plan had been to tell a story of Cho's emergence from her painful background of being bullied about her weight and being unhappy with herself to finally being able to love and accept herself. He said that we all live under a rainbow, with all the colors representing our differences, differences that should be celebrated and not discriminated against. However, ABC edited their package to make it look differently. The judges continued to misinterpret the message, and Cho decided to go with it to help the gay community. Van Amstel said that their story was not only for gay people, but for everyone being bullied and committing suicide. He was angry at her for pushing her beliefs and provoking the world, instead of simply sharing her beliefs in a classy manner. He credits the misinterpretation for their exit that week.
In the past two years, Van Amstel has discovered a passion for hosting. Hosting has made him more vocal about his feelings of equality and he joined organizations such as the ], the ], and ]. He wrote, "I truly believe that if we stop labeling people and communities, we will be able to have a better dialogue, followed by mutual understanding and respect. With integrity and thoughtful communication, we will end minorities and enjoy the fact we are all part of the majority, mankind. We all live under the rainbow with all its beautiful colors, which in my opinion represents all races, all nationalities, all religions, all countries, all ages, people of all physical appearances, all sexual orientations, both sexes, all everything."<ref name=autogenerated1/>

Louis Van Amstel (born June 23, 1972, Amsterdam) is a Dutch-born ballroom dance champion, professional dancer, choreographer, and a dancesport coach who appears on the U.S. reality television series Dancing with the Stars.
Biography
Louis Van Amstel was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on Friday morning June, 23rd 1972. Even though he was born in the city, he lived his childhood in a very small town outside of Amsterdam. His dance life started at the age of 10 after his family decided it was important for his social skills to learn ballroom dancing. His grandparents were competitive ballroom dancers as well. Van Amstel's mentor and coach, Ruud Vermey, cross trained him in many forms of dance and educated him in choreography as well. Van Amstel went on to do a lot of competitive ballroom dancing.
From the age of 15, he was traveling abroad representing his country in major dance competitions in both Ballroom and Latin, where he gained a lot of dancing experience. To make it big, Van Amstel had to get an international partner, move to England, and therefore stop traditional school. He and Vermey convinced his parents to permit him to terminate high school at 16 to pursue his dance career. His parents were torn, because they wanted him to finish his education, but they allowed him to go. Van Amstel went on to become a world champion in 1994.
During the summer of 1989, Van Amstel partnered up with British dancer, Julie Fryer, and they danced together for the next several years winning many competitions. He went on to win three world Latin Dance championship gold medals in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Van Amstel became a 7-time Dutch and 3-time world champion.
Van Amstel's eagerness to bring Ballroom Dance mixed with other forms of dance to the theater world brought him to New York City in 1991, and he fell in love with the city. After he stopped competing at 26, Van Amstel decided to move to New York City in June of 1997, leaving his home country. That summer, he coached Tony Dovolani, Karina Smirnoff, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and his brother Val, and they became close friends. They now work together on Dancing With The Stars. He also founded his dance company VanDance, LLC.
In 1998, Van Amstel decided he wanted to immigrate to the United States and returned to the Netherlands to apply for his immigration papers. In July 1999, his passport was stamped and he received his green card within weeks of his return to the United States. After arriving back in New York City, Van Amstel started competing with Karina Smirnoff. They won the United States national championship in 2000.
In 2001, Van Amstel's desire to be on Broadway led him to renting a Broadway theater to create his own show. He was given nine months to create "Latin Fusion," a ballroom dance extravaganza fused with other forms of dance. 28 dancers joined him and they helped in making the show a huge success premiering on June 22nd, 2002. Later, in 2004, Van Amstel bought a house in Utah and produced another show in Salt Lake City called "Latin Revolution" in September of that year.
While traveling to New York City for work in early 2005, Van Amstel received a call from BBC in London asking if he was interested in auditioning for a new dance show called "Dancing With The Stars". Van Amstel immediately said yes, flew to Los Angeles for his audition, and was cast for season 1. At this time, he was coaching Jonathan Roberts, Anna Trebunskaya, Alec Mazo, Edyta Sliwinska, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and Elena Grinenko. He informed them of the show leading to their castings on the show as well. He also helped cast one of his fellow dancing instructors, Ashly Delgrosso, on the show as well. For the first season of Dancing With The Stars, Van Amstel was partnered with Bachelorette star, Trista Sutter. They were the first to be eliminated from the competition.
After season 1, Van Amstel was coaching Cheryl Burke and her pro partner. He helped her join Dancing With The Stars as well. Van Amstel was invited back for the second season of Dancing With The Stars and was partnered with hostess Lisa Rinna. They made it to the semi-finals, but were eliminated resulting in their fourth place finish.
After season 2, Van Amstel was asked to choreograph the first national tour of Dancing With The Stars. He traveled all over the country for the tour before being nominated for an Emmy award for his group paso doble "Carmina Burana". Van Amstel continued choreographing for the winter tour of Dancing With The Stars starting in December of 2006. He also choreographed for the following summer tour of 2007 and the winter tour of 2007/2008. He also worked as a co-director and dance captain for all of these tours.
Van Amstel returned to Dancing With The Stars in season 3 and was partnered with High School Musical star Monique Coleman. During the eighth week of the competition, they received two 10s for their Cha-Cha-Cha marking Van Amstel's only 10s of Dancing With The Stars to date. They made it to the semi-finals, but were eliminated resulting in their fourth place finish. Van Amstel did not participate in season 4 of Dancing With The Stars due to all the females being taller than he, but he nonetheless maintained a role as a performer and choreographer throughout the season and season 5 as well.
During his time off from Dancing With The Stars, Van Amstel set up a not-for profit dance company called "Visionworx Dance Theater," which is unique as it combines all four major dance forms. However, the recession hasn't helped raise funding for the company. He also choreographed and appeared on numerous TV shows such as The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Hannah Montana, and All My Children.
Van Amstel returned to Dancing With The Stars in season 6 and was partnered with actress, businesswoman, and wife of Elvis Presley Priscilla Presley. The couple made it to the fifth week, but were eliminated resulting in their eighth place finish.
After season 6, Van Amstel was asked to create and choreograph a show called "Ballroom With A Twist" featuring a rotating cast of dancers including a variety of ballroom dancing styles: classical, country, Latin, and more. The show also featured former American Idol contestants including David Hernandez and Carly Smithson. Ballroom With A Twist recently toured in theaters around the country and was very successful. Van Amstel also choreographed seven dances on season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance. Three of the seven dances made it to the finale and were mentioned as the judges' favorite picks at the Kodak theater in Hollywood. He continued choreographing in seasons 6 and 7 as well.
Also during his time off, Van Amstel helped support the Heart Association which addresses obesity. He decided to help fight obesity by creating his dance program Louis' Dance Blast, recently renamed LaBlast, which helps contribute to people becoming healthier through dancing in a fun, enjoyable way. This program is accessible to everybody, regardless of dance ability, financial situation, or the need of a dance partner, and dance moves of many of the styles on Dancing With The Stars are taught. The program was helped inspired by Van Amstel's former dancing partner Lisa Rinna who wanted to continue dancing after Dancing With The Stars was over. Van Amstel travels all over the country with LaBlast, which has recently partnered with CRUNCH. He also released an online dance lesson, that can teach you to dance 8 different dances such as salsa, tango, foxtrot, waltz, jive, chacha, and others. During this time in 2008, Van Amstel became a citizen of the United States.
Van Amstel returned to Dancing With The Stars in season 9 and was partnered with reality TV star and singer Kelly Osbourne. After a very emotional and epic season, the couple beat the odds and made it to the finale where they finished in third place. Kelly Osbourne still credits a huge part of her weight loss and her subsequent new found happiness and confidence to Van Amstel. Her family thanked Van Amstel for doing what they were trying to do for 25 years. Van Amstel and Osbourne still remain very close friends. Van Amstel tweeted a message saying that somebody inspired him to not stay quiet about his personal beliefs anymore and stand up for what he believes in, and in an interview, he stated that person was Kelly.
Van Amstel returned to Dancing With The Stars in season 10 and was partnered with Reno 911! star Niecy Nash. The couple made it to the eighth week, but were eliminated resulting in their fifth place finish. Before returning to Dancing With The Stars for season 11, Van Amstel appeared in the season finale of the Bachelor Pad as a dance instructor for a dance competition for future winners David and Natalie. He also choreographed a dance routine for the hit show Lie To Me. For season 11 of Dancing With The Stars, Van Amstel was partnered with actress and comedian Margaret Cho. The couple made it to the third week, but were eliminated resulting in their tenth place finish. Van Amstel appeared in Cho's comedy music album Cho Dependent as her therapist. He will be appearing in an upcoming episode of Drop Dead Diva with Cho. During the 200th episode celebration of Dancing With The Stars in season 11, Van Amstel won the award for biggest dancer transformation.
For season 12 of Dancing With The Stars, he was partnered with playboy model and reality star Kendra Wilkinson. During the fifth week in the competition, they danced the 1000th competitive dance of Dancing With The Stars. The couple made it to the seventh week, but were eliminated resulting in their sixth place finish. Van Amstel currently resides in Los Angeles, California, but he travels all over the country teaching at his LaBlast program and doing LaBlast teacher's training. He will be choreographing for the current season of So You Think You Can Dance.
LaBlast
The idea for LaBlast first came about after season 2 of Dancing With The Stars. Van Amstel’s celebrity partner Lisa Rinna had told him that she had an amazing experience with him and wanted to keep on dancing after the show was over.
Rinna’s time with Van Amstel not only taught her how to dance, but also helped her get even more fit while doing it. Although Rinna needed to satisfy her new-found ballroom dance addiction, as far as she knew there weren’t any classes offered that fit exactly what she was looking for. After a discussion between the two friends, it quickly became apparent to Louis that there was a real opportunity to create something new and exciting that wasn’t already out there.
This was the birth of what would eventually become LaBlast! The premise was simple; create an affordable partner-free dance class that anyone could participate in to learn to dance, get fit, and have fun with. With the help of Rinna, Van Amstel launched his first class in a small dance studio with 5 friends. After just a few weeks, the classes were packed! More and more classes were added and before he knew it, Van Amstel was teaching eight classes, 6 days a week. People were really enjoying the experience and buzz about the classes was spreading. Many students started taking classes 3 or 4 days a week and the physical, mental, and emotional results were dramatic. After just two years, the classes became so popular that Van Amstel had no choice but to expand by developing the classes into a dance program that would be suitable for instruction at dance and fitness studios worldwide. Van Amstel invited a close friend and noted colleague, Helma Zenner from the Netherlands, to come try the newly designed program. Helma tried all 5 levels and fell in love instantly. She was so enthusiastic about it that she offered her expertise in both fitness and dance education, and assisted Louis in creating the first edition of the LaBlast program manual.
In 2009, immediately after the conclusion of season 9 of Dancing With The Stars, Van Amstel flew to his native country of the Netherlands to test out the LaBlast program in several dance and fitness studios. The response was very positive, and soon three LaBlast Teachers Trainings were completed. Currently, over 30 dance and fitness studios in the Netherlands have added LaBlast to their weekly schedule! With this success, Van Amstel came back to the states with a determination to bring his program to students all across America.
LaBlast recently announced a partnership with CRUNCH fitness gyms to offer the LaBlast program in select pilot CRUNCH locations with a goal for a national rollout in the near future. Van Amstel is also working with individuals, dance studios, and fitness centers all across the US to train professionals into becoming certified LaBlast instructors.
LaBlast additionally organizes vacation retreats at health spas and resorts around the country. The vacationers enjoy morning LaBlast classes everyday, many on a terrace overlooking the ocean. Then health spa activities (and beach time where available) in the afternoon, and finally dance parties in the evenings. Future retreats are being planned for New York City, Las Vegas, Canyon Ranch Tucson, Mexico, and select ocean cruises. Information regarding these retreats will be posted on the LaBlast website along with the newsletter, which also can be joined through the site.
LaBlast is an innovative partner-free dance fitness program. It is designed to be an affordable alternative to private dance and/or workout lessons. Classes are a one-hour cardio dance fitness workout using elements from several types of dance forms, including: Cha Cha Cha, Disco, Jive, Lindy Hop, Merengue, Paso Doble, Quickstep, Salsa, and Samba.
LaBlast uniquely incorporates fitness routines and movements into dance training (sometimes with light weights for additional muscle tone and definition). Music is a key component to the classes, using a wide variety of genres ranging from pop, rock, hip hop, country and disco that creates a fun, energetic club-like atmosphere to workout in. The result is a high-energy experience that makes you want to dance.
The program is offered in five levels- from Beginner through Advanced programs to work out in:
Level 1 Beginner: For the absolute beginner student who has never danced before. Includes the Cha Cha Cha, Salsa and Jive.
Level 2 Advanced Beginner: For beginner students with some light dance experience. Expanded dance moves with Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Jive. Additional dance styles added are Disco and Meringue. This includes the use of light weights to build muscle tone.
Level 3 Slow Intermediate: For students with moderate dance experience. Further dance movements added to the five styles from level 2, and the addition of the Lindy Hop, Samba and Paso Doble with increased weight use and more advanced fitness routines.
Level 4 Intermediate: For students with semi-advanced dance experience. Same as level 3 with the addition of the Quickstep, more enhanced and creative dance movements, and focus on cardio and muscle endurance.
Level 5 Advanced: For students with full blown advanced dance experience. Difficulty level increases in all dance styles, added speed and duration of all dance/fitness movements, and overall an intensive professional level athletic workout.
Early levels of LaBlast offer students an easy introduction into the program and gradually build up a solid foundation. As the levels progress, the intensity also increases as dances and choreography are expanded and technique and details are refined. The most advanced levels in LaBlast focus on building stamina, improving technique, expanding fitness routines, and introducing more advanced choreography. Those looking for a challenge will find it here.
LaBlast is a dance fitness program to help you get in shape or stay in shape. Whether you want to tone your body, build muscle, maintain a healthy lifestyle, learn to dance, or just have a great time, LaBlast offers something for every one of all ages.
