== My Article Vanished ==

Hi, I have been submitting minor edits anonymously for a while, and recently signed up because I wanted to submit a new entry. It was only a few lines, but I wanted to expand and add to it eventually. My contribution vanished without trace! What happened to it?
Is it in a "pending" bin somewhere? - John.

Linking

Hi! I recently linked to a relevant website on the iPod page for converting DVDs to an iPod format video file. I got a message from another member saying that Misplaced Pages cannot be used for commercial purposes. Yes, it was my site, but it is by no means on the internet for commercial purposes, merely for helping iPodders. I would like to know whether I should put it back up. Thank you. —This unsigned comment was added by Ekozie (talkcontribs) 03:48, 21 March 2006.

You can check out Misplaced Pages:External links for guidlines about what types of external links are appropriate. Also, you should talk to the editor who removed your link. Mind if I ask you a question? I am working on a project about colour-blindness. Is colour-blindness an infectious disease like the common cold or influenza? Hope you can reply to me soon.....

Thank you!

Reporting IPs or Users that are doing vandalism

How do I report an ID or an IP of someone that keeps doing Vandalism? --Triage 15:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

There are several places depending on the nature of the vandalism. If it is obvious vandalism, and the vandal has been warned, report to WP:AIV. If you want a watch on a user or for more complicated cases, see requests for investigation. In extreme cases see long term abuse, but that is only to be used in certain situations. For a general guide, see cleaning up vandalism. Petros471 15:33, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

PBS -BBC?

Some 15 or 20 years ago there was a program on PBS of British origin that was most unusual. I think it was shown twice . It consisted entirely of shots where the camera was the eyes of the protaganist. It was otherwise silent. The protaganist simply traveled from place to place through places of business such as factories and warehouses traveling from locale to locale, room to room, and at the end of each of the travels of the protaganist he would come upon someone by surprise, and without so much as a word he would shoot him dead. There were many such scenarios in this movie. It might have occurred during the bad IRA British troubles. I have never been able to find that program. Has anybody ever seen this or know what it is? Please tell me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moebius00 (talkcontribs)

New entry with existing name

I'm trying to open up a page for the British musician Neil Campbell, as a follow on to my extensive amendments to the Richard Youngs and Vibracathedral Orchestra pages and my new A Band page. However, the name Neil Campbell is already taken concerning a US scientist. How can I resolve this? I have looked around the site for an answer to this but can't seem to find anything. Thanks. Ac@osr 10:59, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

You'll want to make the page called Neil Campbell (musician), and the place a link on Neil Campbell to the page you created along the lines of:
This article is about the scientist. For the musician, see Neil Campbell (musician)
However, if both Neil Campbells are equally notable, a disambiguation page should be created. That would mean that Neil Campbell would be a disambiguation page, and would link to both Neil Campbell (musician) and Neil Campbell (scientist) (the original article would be renamed).
That may have been really confusing, but start by making Neil Campbell (musician)! Let me know if you need any help with the disambiguation afterwards. -- Natalya 13:42, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

watch

Hi,

I received a gold pocket watch from a friend. On the back is inscribed.
       A.A.STORES
       --95 3/4--
       Montpelier

  Alderney Butter Color

I am assuming This may have come from Vermont. But I really dont know how to research, the past history of company's that may have been in business back in the early 1900's. I'm assuming this was a presentation watch. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hey, the Misplaced Pages:Images gives a rather short summary on using images, Misplaced Pages:Uploading images tell how to upload a new image, Misplaced Pages:Extended image syntax goes into detail on how to place an image into an article, and you should also visit Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags and Misplaced Pages:Image use policy to learn about adding source information and proper copyright tags to images. Recipes

I am an older (53) user, and would like to add a couple of Australian recipes. Don't have time to read all the info on your site. But have registered as a new user. Can someone tell me in "layman" terms how to do this--Mumbum

Misplaced Pages is not a cookbook, but fortunately we have a sister project called Wikibooks, which does have a cookbook. You can edit the cookbook pages in much the same way as you asked a question on this page. You will need to register a separate account to edit Wikibooks, although you are welcome to use the same user name. You can sign up here. At Wikibooks, I don't think there are any page-creation restrictions on new users, so you should be able to start a new recipe page right away. Thanks for your interest in contributing. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. --TantalumTelluride 05:05, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

about gec

I just made a page and I'm not sure if it's all right

Hi,

I made the page 'Martha Whittington'. I am a fiction author and wanted to include my info on Misplaced Pages to allow my readers know more about me and my work. I'm not sure if this page is public yet or can be viewed at all. I tried adding an internal link and all I was taken to a page saying that the 'Martha Whittington' page does not exist. But when I type my name under search I go straight to the page I created. I have been reading (and for hours) the help info but now I have a headache. Sorry.

Thanks for the help with this.

Trampires

I created the article 'Trampires' as a joke, and it has been proposed for deletion because of Neologism. I don't understand why this is a suitable reason for deletion. Could this please be explained to me? Thanks —This unsigned comment was added by Edmeup (talkcontribs) 19:09, 27 March 2006.

Misplaced Pages is not a jokebook. If you object to deletion in any way, you may remove the {{prod}} template from article. However, please be aware that the article is probably not suitable for Misplaced Pages because it doesn't even assert that its subject is notable. Thanks. --TantalumTelluride 19:18, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

You can find some basic information in Misplaced Pages's article on Peking ducks, but there's not much info about raising them. Maybe you can get some good feedback if you ask at Misplaced Pages's Miscellaneous reference desk. Thanks. --TantalumTelluride 21:29, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

How Can I Stack Images?

I do not know if "stack" is the proper term, so let me try to explain what I would like to do in a wiki article. When I type:

]]

then the 1st image is displayed with the 2nd image displayed flush against the left side of the 1st one with no pixels between them.

Is there a way(s) to have the 1st image displayed but with the 2nd image displayed flush against the bottom of the 1st one with no pixels between them? If not, what about with 1 pixel between them? I would appreciate notification on my talk page, thanks! Clatra 23:00, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

How to edit User page

Please! I've been trying to edit my user page but I have no idea how...all I know how to do is add predesigned userboxes. How can I create a userbox of my own?

For example, I would like to put on my userpage that I'm a Zionist and I'd like to put a star of David beside it...how do I do that?

Loomis

Hi there. There are several methods to create your own userboxes. Misplaced Pages:Userboxes shows a few. Another good solution would be to open an existing template, copy and paste the code and then edit it to sya what you want. For example, I created the folllowing userbox by editing the existing Template:User Jew:

This user is a Zionist.

The code for it was:

<div style="float: left; border:solid #adadee 1px; margin: 1px;">

{| cellspacing="0" style="width: 238px; background: #fafaff;"

| style="width: 45px; height: 45px; background: #e9e9ff; text-align: center; font-size: 14pt; color: black;" | ''']'''

| style="font-size: 8pt; padding: 4pt; line-height: 1.25em; color: black;" | This user is a ''']'''.<br>

|}</div>

<noinclude><br style="clear: both;">

I hope that helps. - Akamad 22:14, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Question mark in title

I just created an article called How Can Any Thing So Little Be Any More?, yet now I realize that the question mark in this article title means I cannot link it from other pages (for some reason it doesn't understand the question mark in the URL.) Does anyone know how to solve this?

It works as is. To link in wikipedia, just do what you just did a few sentences ago - How Can Any Thing So Little Be Any More?. To link from outside wikipedia, make sure all the spaces are underscores, and the question mark gets replaced by %3F. So it would be http://en.wikipedia.org/How_Can_Any_Thing_So_Little_Be_Any_More%3F. Does that help? tiZom(2¢) 01:47, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't know what the problem is then. Neither of those links you posted seem to work for me. Thank you for your help though.

Userbox

I see these boxes on everyone's user pages, and I've heard them referred to as userboxes. However, the userbox page is protected-deleted. Why? And where would I go to find a list of userboxes? Use my (currently non-existant) user page pls. Bduddy

Hi there! The page you are looking for is Misplaced Pages:Userboxes. The difference being the "wikipedia:" prefix. All pages that provide information about Misplaced Pages have that prefix. Wind Farms

I'm thinking of exploring the idea of starting a wind farm on a small moutain foothill above our house outside of Bellingham. I've done some preliminary researsh through the Bonneville Power Administration through their Portland Oregon office. They have done a year long study using an aenometer placed on site. It gave fair to good results. The BPA representative said the site would support about nine 1.5 megawatt wind generators. That would give the owner a$6000 to $9000 annual income. I've also contacted the owner of the land where the wind farm would be. They gave me a positive reaction.I do have some resource support here in the Bellingham area. I belong to analternative energy and green resources organization called The solar group. If this project goes through it would be in collaberation with them. The question I have at this point is where would I go for funding a project like this?

Why not make the userbox page useful?

I understand the page userbox should not be recreated without a good reason. Why not redirect it to Misplaced Pages:Userboxes. I have gone looking for the userboxes the first time I was here and ran into that page. I think it would be helpful to have it link to the most likely intended destination rather than leave it with a message that the page was deleted. Where might I suggest this to the Misplaced Pages community? Also where can I find the archived discussion that led to that page being deleted? Sifaka 01:14, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

What you are proposing is what we refer to as a "cross-namespace redirect" and is something we try not to do. The "main" namespace, or "article space" is for articles only, like China or History of Texas. Pages in the wikipedia namespace, or "project" namespace relate to wikipedia, like this page for example. This is useful because some people might want a database copy of all our articles, but don't want all the pages about wikipedia. There are also some pages that exist in both, Copyright and Misplaced Pages:Copyright for example. The first is the encyclopedia article on copyright, and the other is a project page about how copyright relates to wikipedia and other related policies. As the top of the userbox page says, "Misplaced Pages is first and foremost an online encyclopedia, and as a means to that end, an online community. Userboxes are to help us create the best encyclopedia we can."
To answer your specific question there was most likely no discussion about that page's deletion, a redirect would violate Misplaced Pages:Redirect. If you wanted to discuss the issue and try to change people's minds Misplaced Pages talk:Redirects for deletion would be the place, but there is strong support for not having them because they are usually seen as confusing for people. - cohesion 06:01, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

How can I check a company on web is real?I can just see their website. How will I know that a company is a scammer?

This is a question for the references page. Anyway, go to the Better Business Bureau. Google it, it’s the first hit. They have reliability information about a ton of orgs and buisnesses there. Try searching the name of your company in the reliability report finder. If it isn't there, it's good to be wary. First, Google the company name and look at hits that are not the company’s. Are they good referrals? What kinds of pages mention them? If that doesn’t help, contact someone about it, maybe the person who runs it, maybe even a competing business who you think would know about the company. I hope that helps. Inclusion of Video Clips

Hello, I would like to know if I can include video clips for an article and if so what the copyright restrictions are for clips obtained from various sources. Opie

Before I get into it, let me say, doing video on wikipedia isn't easy, and it's not very common. On to specifics! As far as copyright, the same rules apply to all media, see Misplaced Pages:Copyright. Basically we require the video to be freely licensed under the GFDL, Creative Commons or something similar. The video also could be public domain, or fair use. Fair use for video would be very difficult to defend though. Now on to the hard part! Video on wikipedia needs to be in the Ogg Theora format. This is a freely licensed codec that is required by consensus opinion in keeping with our free software ideals. Depending on your operating system encoding on theora may be very difficult or impossible. The codec itself is still in alpha and no standalone encoders exist yet. For this policy see Files types (commons). Also, here is a list of people who are willing to help with this conversion. - cohesion 08:05, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Suggestions for change to an artical rather than changing it myself

I just checked out one of the pages and noticed that there's very likely a error in the list of plays performed at the Greek festival, the Great Dionysia. An example would be, that the play Frogs by Aristopahnes was performed at the Lenaia where it won a first prize, rather than the Great Dionysia. This error is continued on the main page of the Frogs play, where the top introduction says that the play was performed at 'the' Festival of Doinysus which suggest the Great Dionysia instead of the Lenaia as it should be.

I'm not particularly good at writing or editing, and I'm not at all familiar with wikipedia's formatting tools. So I don't dare try 'fixing' it myself. Anyway, that was the error I encountered; But my question is (for future referance): Is there are place I'm supposed to go to -other than here- to suggest a change to other users?

Well, yes, you can ask the Help Desk or Village pump. Good luck!--Tdxiang 陈 鼎 翔 (Talk)ContributionsContributions Chat with Tdxiang on IRC! 10:15, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Being an encyclopedia, Misplaced Pages is certainly not the place for it. As for using the general concept of a wiki, it would depend on how your friend wanted information contributed to the site. Creating a biography

I would like to create a biography of a person I feel should be in the Misplaced Pages. He was a local person who gained national fame in the 1930's. He was a local character and famous in my area of Ohio for nearly all his life. He was a flag pole sitter, a daredevil high wire act and a human fly. I have an original copy of his autobiography from which to glean the facts of his life. This man has been dead since 1978. And was a personal friend of mine for the last six months of his life.

Would such an article be apropriate to publish on Misplaced Pages? Thanks for any insight.

Hi there! It does sound like your late friend should merit an article on Misplaced Pages - take a look at your first article, and then starting a new page for more info on starting an article. Reversion

I've just been to Citroën AX and noticed that it had been vandalised only a few minutes before. My stupid newbie question is "Is there an easy way revert the vandalism - how do I do it?"

dave

Yes - go to the article in question, and click on the "History" button (middle top of the screen if you're using the default skin). This will bring up a list of versions of the article. Use the radio buttons and the "compare selected revisions" button to see the difference in versions. Assuming no-one has edited the article since the vandalism occurred (be careful about this!), you can simply revert to an earlier version by opening it (clicking on the date of the appropriate revision in the History view, the one just before the vandalism, when the article was still un-vandalised), then clicking the "Edit" button. The article will now appear as it was as of the revision you clicked, and you can click "Save" to save the article in the state it was as of that version. Voila! You have just reverted your first vandalism. Go on and try it - it sounds horribly complicated when explained, but it's very straightforward once you do it yourself. Just to reiterate - make sure that there have been no changes since the vandalism you are trying to revert, otherwise those changes will be lost too! Oh, and please leave an edit summary - an abbreviation you can use is rvv, which stands for "reverting vandalism". — QuantumEleven | (talk) 22:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

how do you save an edit for ever because there are some incorect information —This unsigned comment was added by Gijoeak47 (talkcontribs) 23:28, March 31, 2006 (UTC).

What do you mean, "save it for ever"? When you modify and article and click the "Save" button at the bottom, your changes are immediately incorporated into the article. However, any editor after you can edit your changes, so there is no way to keep information in an article "for ever" - that's the whole idea of a wiki, editors improve on each other's work! You may want to check out Misplaced Pages:Introduction, it introduces some of the concepts of Misplaced Pages, and why it works (and also why it sometimes doesn't!). About Translating an article

Hey guys!

Just a little question....I was checking some info, which is available in english, thank god I know the language but I would like to cooperate translating the page into spanish.

What would I need to do to achieve that? I dont know much about creating style sheets and things like that to be uploaded to the internet, so thats the reason of my question. I would appreciate your replay

thank you

HM

Definately! One of the nice things about wikipedia is that you don't need to know any of that to edit like a professional :) If you have specific pages you want to translate into spanish, just go to the spanish wikipedia and create the new article. You can do this by typing the name at the end of the url, for example http://es.wikipedia.org/nombre_de_articulo Then translate away :) Once you are done, at the bottom of the page type ] This will add a link to the english article from spanish, then come to english and do the same thing, but ]. So, what you are doing is making a new article at spanish wikipedia, and then linking them together.
If you want to help translate but don't know which article to do check out es:Categoría:Misplaced Pages:Traducciones solicitadas. If you want more help formatting pages see es:Misplaced Pages:Manual de estilo and es:Misplaced Pages:Cómo se edita una página If you ever want to translate into english we need help there too Misplaced Pages:Spanish Translation of the Week If you have any other questions let us know :) - cohesion 19:46, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Can't find my "My Talk" article using the Search function

I am unable to find the listing of my My Talk posting using any of the words in the title of my post. --Dan 02:17, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

That's because "My Talk" is a special page - each user has one, it's a page where other users can leave you messages. For instance, my talk page is at User_talk:QuantumEleven. Yours is at User_talk:DanLCc - you can access it easily by clicking on "my talk" at the very top of the screen, just to the right of "DanLCc". Can i create my own free wiki page here ? If yes please do reply about how to create it ? Thanks in advance ..

~ Sundar

That depends what you define as a "free wiki" - Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia. However, individual registered users have a page (their user page, for instance, you can find mine here) where they can, if they wish, add some information about themselves. Misplaced Pages is not a free host, blog, or webspace provider, so you shouldn't treat your user page as a blog or for writing about things not connected to Misplaced Pages.
If you want to run your own wiki, the software used to run Misplaced Pages (MediaWiki) is available for free under the GPL license, you can download and install it on your own webserver to run your own Wiki. Be warned that it's a complex piece of software, and if you only want to run a simple wiki something simpler may serve you better (see list of wiki software for more info).
If you are looking to contribute to a specific wiki which is not Misplaced Pages, you can check out some of our sister projects (at the bottom of the Main Page). Have fun at Misplaced Pages! — QuantumEleven | (talk) 09:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

My stress-o-meter is about to explode...

Wikistress
Wikistress

I spent months working on the community portal, including creating/installing the Community Bulletin Board, and based on the heavy use the CBB gets, I was under the impression that most people liked the page. Unfortunately, the way the talk page system is set up, it seems like only people with complaints and gripes visit those, so all I seemed to get was negative feedback, on various points and then recently to the design effort itself. I did everything I could to accomodate the specific points (except for a select couple that I really liked). But then people started complaining about the page being changed at all - and it was supposedly an open page! Then somebody comes along and reverts the page to a version that existed months ago, including getting rid of the community bulletin board, soon followed by an admin who locks the page. Luckily another bold admin restored the CBB, but *sigh*, not the rest of the page. So... I called for a vote to get the page changed back! And finally, some encouragement shows up in the form of support votes. Is this what we have to do to avoid the Wikiblues around here? --Go for it! 20:01, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

It's not a vote. Misplaced Pages is not a democracy. Your so-called vote is merely a "discussion" with numbered comments labelled with unambiguous Support or Oppose tags. And yes, that's what we have to do from time to time. It usually works very well, that is, until someone threatens to leave Misplaced Pages if he doesn't get his way. The process can also become pretty ugly if it doesn't produce a clear concensus. Anyway, if the community is to reach a peaceful collaborative decision, it must indeed sometimes hold votes discussions. --TantalumTelluride 00:26, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

How do I make this page public? —This unsigned comment was added by Boncomics (talkcontribs) 16:19, April 4, 2006 (UTC).

All pages on Misplaced Pages are public, they can be seen and edited by anyone. However, looking at your contributions list, I would guess that you are talking about your user page (User:Boncomics). You seem to have misunderstood what the difference between a user page and an article is. A user page (a page which has the prefix User:) is meant to be a page briefly listing information about you, the contributor (for instance, take a look at my user page). Articles are, well, articles on subjects. You seem to have been trying to write an article - take a look at your first article, and then starting a new page on info on how to write your first article. Good luck! — QuantumEleven | (talk) 17:00, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

posting article

Am I able to post an article about an organization if I work for the organization?

While it's discouraged (because you are unlikely to be impartial to your organisation), yes, in theory, you can, there is nothing stopping you. However, please be extra cautious in your edits, read over the Misplaced Pages policy on neutral point of view (NPOV), and know that your edits will probably come under closer scrutiny than edits from someone who has no affiliation with your organisation. However, if you can make good, NPOV contributions, go right ahead! Although, as I said, you may be better off editing some articles where you have no connection to the subject matter to get the hang of the Misplaced Pages. Good luck! — QuantumEleven | (talk) 17:04, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I 'am' a new user. I've noticed on my "my preferences" page a pink coloured box that says reads as follows:

  • E-mail (optional): Enables others to e-mail you from your user or user talk page, without revealing your e-mail address. It will be revealed when you use the "E-mail this user" feature. Please note that if you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm your address.

Articles copied from a source

When someone takes an article from a source, are they suppose to put it in their own words or quote the source word by word. —This unsigned comment was added by 216.12.21.57 (talkcontribs) 17:33, 6 April 2006.

Large portions of text should never be copied word-for-word from copyrighted sources. Up to a few sentences or phrases may be copied word-for-word if the source is explicitly credited and the copied text is placed in qutation marks and the copied text contributes significantly to the reader's comprehension of the article. In most cases, it is best to draft an article in your own words using several reliable sources and to cite the sources using footnotes. (See Misplaced Pages:Cite your sources.) In the unlikely case that the copied source is in the public domain or licensed under the GFDL, it can be copied word-for-word as long as credit is given to the original authors. --TantalumTelluride 18:59, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Extra Space

I noticed that in wikihtml, when we edit, formating has extra space, for example, when we edit a comment, there's a space between the $Subject/headline:$ & the content of the message. Another example is $== Extra Space ==$ is also the same as $==Extra Space==$. Does this make comments larging in size as bytewise? Even if not, it could create confusion. So I guess Mediawiki needs to be tweaked/the devlopers\the codes needs a little editing?

Please leave one if you'd like more clarification on this issue. You could also contact me .

thanks

Could you please clarify your question? --TantalumTelluride 21:34, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Response to your first question: yes, technically it makes a difference (a few extra bytes per page), but storage space is dirt cheap and no-one cares (you shouldn't either). Wiki markup is designed to be forgiving and very easy for rank amateurs to understand, it's not strict or logical like a programming language.
I don't really understand your reasons for not getting an account, they seem frivolous. If you don't use an account anymore, just don't use it anymore, no harm done. Misplaced Pages is published under the GFDL, if this is something that you can't live with, then I'm afraid you may have to seek another Wiki to participate in. That would be a pity, as we hate losing contributors. — QuantumEleven | (talk) 16:18, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Withdrawing a Featured Picture nomination

I nominated an image for Featured Picture and afterward realized that it doesn't meet the size requirement of 1000 pixels. Is it acceptable to delete the nomination, or is a slow death required? Thanks. Mooveeguy 21:18, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I would suggest leaving a note on the nomination page explaining the situation. Then there probably won't be a pile-on of oppose votes. Letting it ride out the process won't hurt anything. --TantalumTelluride 21:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Doesn't WP:SNOW apply? Eivind 09:50, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
WP:SNOW makes a lot of sense, but implementing it requires a great deal of WP:BOLD and might cause some WP:DICKS to throw a fit. ;-) --TantalumTelluride 20:04, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Moving page sections

I am currently planning on making major edits to Clans (BattleTech), involving (amongst other things) creating a separate page for each Clan and simply linking to them from the main article. I understand that it's not recommended to simply copy and paste content, as this does not carry the edit history over to the new article. However, there seems to be no way to use the 'move' function to move page sections. At present, the best solution I can think of is to simply copy-paste to create new articles and then put a note in the talk page for each new article linking to the edit history of the main article. Any help would be very much appreciated. --Lucian Gregory 14:20, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages Admin

How does one become an Admin on Misplaced Pages and where can we find a list of them? I see userboxes stating that they are "Misplaced Pages admin", but can't find out what admin actually is or does, or who they actually are. Scotwood72 17:57, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

See Misplaced Pages:Administrators for detail on administration. Misplaced Pages:List of administrators for a full list of admins. You can nominate yourself for adminship at Misplaced Pages:Requests for adminship, though having somebody else nominate you generally increases your chances of success. The requests page has a link to the criteria the some people use for voting for admin candidates and the current prevailing requirements are somewhere around 3 months of contributions to the project with a minimum of 1,500 edits over multiple areas including the Misplaced Pages namespace as well as on articles. --GraemeL 18:05, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Stubs not displaying

Hi, I created a number of Artists stubs a few months ago. I did searches on those artists today and the stubs I created are not showing up in the search results, but they had previously. Any thoughts? - Thanks __Alp1776 02:26, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

It's possible that the pages might have been deleted according to Misplaced Pages's deletion policy. What were some of the particular article names? --TantalumTelluride 02:30, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi Alp1776, here's a page of your contributions: Special:Contributions/Alp1776. Hopefully you can track down what you're looking for from there. — TheKMan 02:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

HI, here are the Artist Stubs I contributed: Arnold Friedman, Edward Henry Potthast, John D. Graham, Richard Pousette-Dart - Thanks __Alp1776 02:49, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Great, looks like you found what you were looking for. Anyway, I tried using the Misplaced Pages search function to find Edward Henry Potthast using the term "Edward Henry Potthast" but I was given "no results" (however, "Go" sent me directly to the article). The Misplaced Pages search engine isn't the best in the world (and is sensitive to spelling and capitalization), and Google is always a good alternative. Also, I'd like to point out the Watchlist, which is a great way to keep tabs on articles that are of a particular interest to you. — TheKMan 02:57, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks TheKMan! Dumb question though, what are the differnces between "Go" and "Search" buttons? And if the stubs I contributed show up in Google does that mean they haven't been deleted? Won't I see a warning message on the stub before it is deleted? I am aware of my watchlist and view it almost daily. __Alp1776 03:08, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

The "Go" button sends you directly to the page with the search term you entered, and the "Search" button attempts to find articles that include your search term. Also, if an article shows up in Google, it doesn't always mean it still exists, as it sometimes caches articles shortly before they are deleted. As long as they still show up in your contributions page, they are still around. In cases of an article's deletion, sometimes the admin who deletes it will be nice enough to inform you of this, but this doesn't always happen, so it's best to keep an eye on articles of interest. As long as an article doesn't meet a criteria for speedy deletion, you'll see any "proposed deletion" or "articles for deletion" tags on an article for a week, and you can watch for this through your Watchlist. — TheKMan 03:31, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Is it typical that a new stub will display right away within the search results listing and then later on not display within the results? I have always used the "Search" button and not the "Go" button. __Alp1776 13:55, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

No, likely you hit the "Go" button the first time and "Search" the second. The Misplaced Pages index used by the "Search" function takes a while to be updated (it's huge!), so a newly created article generally won't appear on it for a week or two. Be patient! :) — QuantumEleven | (talk) 08:20, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

How do you make hidden text?

U.S. AMBASSADOR ZALMAY kHALILZAD'S U.S. CITIZENS STATUS

THIS IS A QUESTION NOT AN EDIT OR CONTRIBUTION: I understand that U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad came to the U.S. as an Afghan High School Exchange Student (which generally meant he came from a very wealthy family) and remained in the U.S. despite exchange student visas having limited duration. I am also aware that many "exchange students" have used their status to intentionally enter the U.S. illegally. How did Ambassadot Khalilzad really become a U.S. citizen??

Tabloid?

Hello, I noticed that there is no statement on the "What Misplaced Pages is Not" page stating that Misplaced Pages is not a Tabloid (such as the National Enquirer or Globe). The fact that these types of publications have a reputation for presenting information and/or arguments without references and have in some cases have been found to be in error...my question is...is Misplaced Pages a Tabloid or not?

NO. Misplaced Pages is just an encyclopedia.--Tdxi

Why is this not stated on the What Misplaced Pages is Not page?

It seems a bit spurious to list everything that Misplaced Pages is not (eg Misplaced Pages is not a fish), because most of them are obvious. Misplaced Pages:What Misplaced Pages is not is for things similar to Misplaced Pages which have caused problems in the past where it was not clear what Misplaced Pages was not (for instance, "Misplaced Pages is not a crystal ball", to stop articles about unsourced speculations of the future). — QuantumEleven | (talk) 08:17, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

My Article Vanished

Hi, I have been submitting minor edits anonymously for a while, and recently signed up because I wanted to submit a new entry. It was only a few lines, but I wanted to expand and add to it eventually. My contribution vanished without trace! What happened to it? Is it in a "pending" bin somewhere? - John.
