Aloha

Just though I would let you know I just about giggled with excitement when I saw you were getting involved in the Mid-April 2011 tornado outbreak article. I hope life has been treating you well; I haven't seen you around the wiki hardly at all. At any rate, it would help us greatly if you could help out with that article. The more experienced severe weather editors we have on board the better. =) Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 05:35, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Images

With regards to freely licensed images in the tornado outbreak article, I even checked Flickr for ones of the Tuscaloosa tornado but came up empty. I added the {{Image requested}} template to the talk page, but I doubt that will produce results. It seems the only routes here for images might be permissions requests and or fair-use rationales. Any other suggestions? Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 16:57, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Regarding "Super Outbreak" as an adjective

I agree that such an adjective should be officially defined before using such terminology to describe an event. I accept the undo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mongoose470 (talkcontribs) 03:01, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Re: April 25-28 2011 Tornado Outbreak wording

Good evening! What I meant to do with my edit was to clean up that particular section so that it would be clear that the Tupelo-Gainesville outbreak was actually the second-deadliest in U.S. history, according to the known death tolls. I didn't make it clear enough the first time around but I tried again. (CapeFearWX (talk) 03:14, 1 May 2011 (UTC))

Re: yeah, that news article is full of shit; it's pretty much accepted that it was a single tornado.

That is your personal opinion. How about a citation? You offer no citation other than Grazulis. What page number? How about a sample piece of text that supports your claim? How can anyone verify that? I am reverting your revert. Think wisely before starting a revert war. "that news article is full of shit; it's pretty much accepted that it was a single tornado." Back that opinion up. How do I know you are not "full of shit?" I added an additional citation. TimL (talk) 06:04, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

(Expanding) Blue Circle Phenomenon appearance on NEXRAD weather maps.

To date there are no explanations of this repetitious phenomenon.

This is at least a valid stab at explaining the incidental appearance of expanding blue circles appearing at a distance from radar sites. The comparative analysis to explosive shockwaves may be removed if it will prevent misunderstandings.

I could express the system in greater systematic detail if you wish.

(Expanding) Blue Circle Phenomenon appearance on NEXRAD weather maps...Continued

I agree with the page change to the Radar page and unfortunately, this is original work - my apologies. I'd like to know your thoughts on the phenomenon which I can possibly provide a screen captured image. I believe that the process occurs in relatively calm but saturated air where the heat of vaporization reaches a super critical level forcing the moisture to diffuse outward from the source and those radars that are in Clear Air Mode can pick up on the wave of outflowing moisture.

Great to hear from you so soon,

John

DYK for Tornadoes in New England

Updated DYK queryOn 8 July 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tornadoes in New England, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that though generally uncommon, tornadoes in New England have nevertheless included two of the ten most damaging such storms in U.S. history? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

The image you provided is not the correct image I'm referring to. I'll get back to you after next week - Going to Hilton Head for a week. When I get back I'll try to obtain a sequence of images. FPC closure

Hi RoB! Thanks for closing Misplaced Pages:Featured picture candidates/STS-134 launch, we do need the help. A couple minor squabbles:

  • Make sure you keep the comment "End of FPs" at Template:Announcements/New featured content, your edit removed it. I have added it back. The comment is used by my FPC-closing script. See below.
  • Make sure to increment the FP count at Misplaced Pages:Featured pictures when promoting, I have done so for your promotion.
  • Instead of doing all that work manually, you can use a script I wrote: User:Jujutacular/closeFPC. There are only a few things you still have to do manually, mainly adding the image to the proper sub-page of WP:FP. If you have any trouble with it, or you are not sure exactly how to install/use it, let me know.

Hope this helps! Thanks for taking an interest in FPC closures, and I hope to see you around again. Cheers, Jujutacular  00:36, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

May 21-27, 2011 outbreak sequence

Rather than getting into a messy revert, I'll discuss here. The two tornadoes listed at the end are merely a continuation of the previous event rather than a separate outbreak. The front stalled out near the East Coast, creating continued severe weather events, including those two tornadoes. Since it's synoptically the same system, there's no real reason to exclude them. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:20, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Alright, no argument here now. Thanks for the clarification. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:36, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Radar Blue Circles Continued

I'm back from Hilton Head. Sorry for the delay on this subject. I have already captured an image from http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/full_loop.php that shows the expanding circles (always in the morning and at a distance from the radar sites). I can provide the screen captured images but I’m not sure how to attach the images in this forum. Thanks, John

tehelka edit

You must take some time and read through the the tehelka wiki page, especially major stries and tell me if yo can spot even one story incriminating the UPA govt. which has been in power since 2004 and it can be safely assumed (if you bother to open your eyes sometime) has been involved in a far lot more scams, corruption and wrongdoing. As i wrote,in popular paralance referred to as the most corrupt govt this country has ever had (seeing the record of politicians in this country, its no mean feat). I'm no Congress or B.J.P fanbooy ,just a citizen severely disillusioned by the nexus whixh exists betwen the media and the politicians and how the press has been infiltrated and severly diminished. Blaming the poor ethics of the magzine on biased versions and then indulging in semantics over the word vandalism is a cheap and hollow shot.Bit of bland babble. Infact the tehelka page as of now is severely biased and is a self indulging eulogy. As for evidence, unless you are blind or have burried your head in the sand, i think i have provided the link to the debate for the reader to judge and decide on the neutrality of the tehelka jounalists.I paraphrased what happened. There was no personal opinion involved. Your act basically calls into question your prejudice, ability to think neutrally and seperate your own political opinions and whether you are competent enough to responsibly execute your duties.

Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Opposition to the legalisation of abortion". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by January 17, 2011.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

Nahum Gergel

Hello, Runningonbrains,

I've just finished adding references to the article about Nahum Gergel and wondering is this enough or I shall look further?

Also, I've started to work on the Russian translation of the article - as soon as translation is finished I'd like to contribute it and to link it to the original English article. Is there an easy way of doing it (providing there is an already existing article in English)?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

News and progress from RfA reform 2011

RfA reform: ...and what you can do now.

(You are receiving this message because you are either a task force member, or you have contributed to recent discussions on any of these pages.)

The number of nominations continues to nosedive seriously, according to these monthly figures. We know why this is, and if the trend continues our reserve of active admins will soon be underwater. Misplaced Pages now needs suitable editors to come forward. This can only be achieved either through changes to the current system, a radical alternative, or by fiat from elsewhere.

A lot of work is constantly being done behind the scenes by the coordinators and task force members, such as monitoring the talk pages, discussing new ideas, organising the project pages, researching statistics and keeping them up to date. You'll also see for example that we have recently made tables to compare how other Wikipedias choose their sysops, and some tools have been developed to more closely examine !voters' habits.

The purpose of WP:RFA2011 is to focus attention on specific issues of our admin selection process and to develop RfC proposals for solutions to improve them. For this, we have organised the project into dedicated sections each with their own discussion pages. It is important to understand that all Misplaced Pages policy changes take a long time to implement whether or not the discussions appear to be active - getting the proposals right before offering them for discussion by the broader community is crucial to the success of any RfC. Consider keeping the pages and their talk pages on your watchlist; do check out older threads before starting a new one on topics that have been discussed already, and if you start a new thread, please revisit it regularly to follow up on new comments.

The object of WP:RFA2011 is not to make it either easier or harder to become an admin - those criteria are set by those who !vote at each RfA. By providing a unique venue for developing ideas for change independent of the general discussion at WT:RFA, the project has two clearly defined goals:

  1. Improving the environment that surrounds RfA in order to encourage mature, experienced editors of the right calibre to come forward, pass the interview, and dedicate some of their time to admin tasks.
  2. Discouraging, in the nicest way possible of course, those whose RfA will be obvious NOTNOW or SNOW, and to guide them towards the advice pages.

The fastest way is through improvement to the current system. Workspace is however also available within the project pages to suggest and discuss ideas that are not strictly within the remit of this project. Users are invited to make use of these pages where they will offer maximum exposure to the broader community, rather than individual projects in user space.

We already know what's wrong with RfA - let's not clutter the project with perennial chat. RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all the task force needs to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion where the entire Misplaced Pages community will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus.

New tool Check your RfA !voting history! Since the editors' RfA !vote counter at X!-Tools has been down for a long while, we now have a new RfA Vote Counter to replace it. A significant improvement on the former tool, it provides a a complete breakdown of an editor's RfA votes, together with an analysis of the participant's voting pattern.

Are you ready to help? Although the main engine of RFA2011 is its task force, constructive comments from any editors are always welcome on the project's various talk pages. The main reasons why WT:RfA was never successful in getting anything done are that threads on different aspects of RfA are all mixed together, and are then archived where nobody remembers them and where they are hard to find - the same is true of ad hoc threads on the founder's talk page.

Proposed deletion of Steven Joseph

Hello, Runningonbrains, and thanks for your contributions to Misplaced Pages!

I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you worked on, Steven Joseph, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

It helps to explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the Help Desk. Thanks again for contributing!Template:Z79 ... discospinster talk 21:51, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Steven Joseph

Hello, Runningonbrains, and thanks for contributing to Misplaced Pages!

I wanted to let you know that some editors are discussing at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Steven Joseph whether the article Steven Joseph should be in Misplaced Pages. I encourage you to comment there if you think the article should be kept in the encyclopedia.

The deletion discussion doesn't mean you did something wrong. In fact, other editors may have useful suggestions on how you can continue editing and improving Steven Joseph, which I encourage you to do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the Help Desk.

Question - Mass Updates of Climate Data

Hello...

I posted a request regarding climate data here WikiProject Meteorology. In going through this section, it looks like you've got a meteorological background. I would love your opinion if you get a moment. I committed a newbie faux pas by posting without properly reaching consensus.

Right now, just looking for feedback. If I touch a page, I get plenty of feedback :-). Seems like things are a bit slower in the talk project pages, so thought I'd get more active in asking folks to sound off.

If reaching out is a Wiki faux pas, please chalk it up to not knowing the community. I know weather normals and averages, but I'm still new on Wiki.

Thank you.

MSU Interview

Dear Runningonbrains,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 20:55, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Venturi Effect (tornadoes)

Hi there - It seems we have a slight bit of an editing discrepancy regarding the mention of the Venturi Effect in the article on tornadoes. You're probably justified in removing it (I'm certainly not going to force the issue, so that needn't concern you), but I do think it's an important thing to understand in terms of the overpasses' lack of safety. You said in one of your edit summaries that "no source explicitly mentions the Venturi Effect" but there is one that does, and it actually comes from NOAA (). Like I said, I'm not going to press it (you're likely far more knowledgeable than I on the subject), but could you tell me, after reviewing the source I provided, whether you still feel the same way? Thanks. Cheers. Sleddog116 (talk) 02:56, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

I promise I did look for a source for the Venturi effect, but did not find one. I didn't have a problem with mentioning it per se, but the grammar was poor and I couldn't immediately find any sources backing it up, so I removed it. I'm trying to clean up the section right now, and will re-include it, as it seems logical to include both scientific and empirical evidence against sheltering under overpasses. However, I will be cutting some of the narrative for space and flow concerns, and since a lot of material is duplicated at Tornado myths. Your work and opinion is always appreciated, and I hope my edits are agreeable to the both of us. I welcome you to let me know if you have any other concerns about the article or my edits.-RunningOnBrains 03:09, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
I did notice that at Tornado Myths - to be honest (another reason I'm not pressing the issues), I didn't notice that fact in the Tornado Myths article until after you mentioned it just now. I feel kinda dumb now. Word it the way you think best - I was working more on just cleaning up the article than on the actual content, and I hated to think that an important piece of information might have been left out. Thanks for the prompt response. Sleddog116 (talk) 03:16, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Morristown Edit

Why does the Mark Bell entry continue to be added to the notable residents section of the Morristown, TN? I have edited this section numerous times to correct. It is not vandalism. Please explain how Mark Bell is notable? He is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morristown1234 (talkcontribs) 03:04, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

no link to archive page on WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Joss Pentoscope

Hello, I noticed that on WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Joss Pentoscope there is no link to WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Joss Pentoscope/Archive. Normally, you'd expect to see a line like "This page's archived case(s) is/are at Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppet investigations/Joss Pentoscope/Archive" but that does not appear anywhere. Thanks. material added to pi article

Hi. I've been working on pi for the past couple of months, getting it ready for FAC. I just found out there was an RfC/Merge proposal at the Tau article. Tau is a very fringe subject in math, and adding more than a single sentence about it in the pi article is a pretty big violation of UNDUE policy. I reverted the change to pi for that reason. Then I discovered you changed the tau article to a redirect. I dont think the pi Talk page was notified of the merge discussion, or I could have jumped in earlier. Would you mind un-doing the change; putting a merge notification in the pi Talk page; and putting a notification at the Math project; and then if consensus for merge happens, wait until after the FAC is over to take any action? Thanks. --Noleander (talk) 03:31, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

AUiBH

That page is Official page of American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so I want to change it because I work there. And I dont want to have that information about SUNY on my Official page on Misplaced Pages. If there is a price for it please tell me ? Im willing to pay, but I dont want to have that informations on AUBiH. If I need to deliver some docuents from court etc. tell me I will upload it and show everything to you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NewFace88 (talkcontribs) 21:21, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

NewFace88, you seem to be a little confused about how wikipedia works. Misplaced Pages is not the private domain of Denis Prcic. It is a place where, like many universities -- perhaps not AUBiH, but most universities -- the free exchange of ideas is embraced as a way of creating an accurate and comprehensive view of a particular topic. Here, at wikipedia, all users are free to edit as long as they stay within the guidelines... guidelines established by wikipedia, not Denis Prcic. So quite frankly, what your boss is telling you is irrelevant as to whether an entry on an article is valid or not.
If AUBiH wants to be a respectable institution of higher learning, it needs to act the part. Until then, information unbecoming a respectable institution, such as AUBiH's conduct with SUNY, will continue to arise and become public knowledge. The way to change things is not to repeatedly try to delete information on wikipedia, but to change the behavior at AUBiH. Fairview360 (talk) 13:38, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

WP:AIV

La Mujer Del Vendaval hasn't aired in Mexico at all (let alone USA), so "Coming Soon/TBA (aired)" & "first_aired: Coming Soon/TBA, last_aired: TBA" fall under "incorrect information". As a matter of fact, there is little info about this "upcoming" telenovela. The first & last aired parameters should only be used if an airdate exists, and the last aired parameter shouldn't have "present" until the network airs the first episode. The same applies for this edit which he was warned on April 25.

Regarding the El Talisman warning from April 12, I was referring to this edit; no explanation was given as to why it was removed. The April 14 warning for Abismo was for the insertion of a machine translated synopsis, which I reported weeks ago (edits were deleted) as it was considered a copyvio. The April 25 warning was for the unexplained removal of a page protection tag; guests can't edit that page due to excessive insertion of copyvio material that occurred this month. I hope this clears up confusion. Platinum Star (talk) 00:28, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Copyright problems board

Welcome. :D I appreciate your pitching in at Misplaced Pages:Copyright problems/2012 April 6 and just wanted to thank you (hate that backlog). Any time you feel like pitching in, please do! We've got plenty of work there to go around. :D --Moonriddengirl 13:40, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

LOL! That's how I got sucked in. :) I wandered by one day - years and years ago - and went, "Wow, would you look at that backlog?" I've been mopping the room every since. Seriously, I'm obviously dedicated to trying to keep on top of it, and I really do appreciate any time you want to give it. I know it's tedious work, and honestly I'd rather have people poke occasionally than burn out. I've seen that happen more than once. :) --Moonriddengirl 22:08, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Close paraphrasing

Hi, thanks for looking at it and sorry about any confusion. The issue came up at DYK where User:Nikkimaria raised concerns about Khaled Ali (link to DYK discussion). Unfortunately, s/he noted that many if not most sentences bore some resemblance to the underlying sources. They were too closely paraphrased in her opinion. User:Dpmuk has been going through the list one by one and found fewer problems; so far he's done Kamal Abbas, Wael Khalil, and Death of Hamza Ali Al-Khateeb. Those are the longest articles I've written, so the bulk of the review is finished. I'm not sure how I can help accelerate the process, except note that I always provide references immediately after the sentences I write, so the proximate citation is exactly where to look for any close paraphrasing issues. Again, sorry for the time this is taking. Let me know if you need anything else. Ocaasi 22:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Also, not sure if you realized, but this is being reviewed at Copyright Problems, where I posted about it: Misplaced Pages:Copyright_problems/2012_March_28#28_March_2012. Ocaasi 22:58, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Dennis Noel

Just a quick reminder, when you're speedy deleting a page could you also check whether there are any redirects that need to be G8ed along with it? I had actually moved Dennis Noel from an incorrectly capitalized title just before tagging it as uncategorized, and you left the redirect untouched. I've deleted it now, so no worries, but just a quick reminder to check "what links here" before moving on to your next task. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 08:33, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

the surviving and non-surviving walls of Walmart and not seeing the whole picture

I stand by my assertion that the the walls of Walmart were instantly destroyed and collapsed. Since I was there and you were not. I will explain why one picture doesn't soundly refute my assertion or does it support a correct synthesis or a factual original research conclusion. The picture from a website you are using as evidence is very misleading when using it for your own opposing conclusion. The picture at: http://mchenrycountyblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Joplin-Walmart.png only shows the one surviving section of a large supercenter. It doesn't show that the walls from around the rest of Walmart that were pushed over or destroyed by this tornado. Stcofire (talk) 15:29, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Responding to the deletion of an article

Hey , I noticed you deleted my article and said it looked like a step-by-step hacking instruction. I'm not sure if you know what a bukkit server is , but it DEFINITELY does not invovle hacking... You might think it's hacking just because it uses Terminal, but you only use Terminal to launch the server. I also was not done with the article. That code you saw in the article was not a hacking code, it was the code to launch the server.

I guess you're right. I didn't realize I made a tutorial, sorry. I just wasn't sure at first whether the computer just accidentally thought what I wrote was in relevant but now I clearly see the reason. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.6.14.183 (talk) 20:43, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

User:Runningonbrains/Portal needed dates

I've found you some events for the needed dates...I haven't checked if they have articles, but they're still events.

  • February 4:
  • February 8:
  • March 24:
  • April 18:
  • May 17:
  • June 14: & (Both are pretty local events, unfortunately.)
  • July 18:
  • July 27: (This one is especially good...evidently it's the date of the first ever flight into a hurricane.)
  • November 18:
  • December 6: (I apologize in advance for the bad pun =P )
  • December 13: I'm afraid that on this one there doesn't seem to be anything significant, but here's the link anyway:
  • December 18:
  • December 23:

I'm not sure how much this will help but hopefully it will at least get a couple three of the days off the list. Ks0stm 23:33, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Re: Faridkot district

I am from Faridkot and I wanted to make sure if anybody else types faridkot, he may get only 1 article about faridkot. Faridkot district has nothing important for general audience, no one wants to collect statistics. If you do not want to delete this page then merge it with Faridkot, Punjab — Preceding unsigned comment added by Singh gagan26 (talkcontribs) 05:34, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Re: Faridkot district

It seems that I am helpless in this case. I can only propose, which gets deleted after 10 mins.

ATleast do 2 things on your own, coz ur not gonna let me edit anything:

1. change the name of 'Faridkot district' to 'Faridkot District' with capital 'D'. 2. There are some references to 'faridkot, punjab' with links names as 'faridkot, India'. Change those links to 'Faridkot, Punjab' — Preceding unsigned comment added by Singh gagan26 (talkcontribs) 05:50, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Adding false information

Hi, Runningobrains. Sorry for my bad english. I'm here because exist a user of spanish wikipedia adding false information in wikipedia in english, in the article Trujillo, Peru, he is adding information that in spanish is named as "investigación original", you can see the talk about es:Áreas metropolitanas más pobladas de Perú in metropolitan areas of Peru the page was created by the same user (same IP), this article is the "investigación original", the information of article Trujillo, Peru was taken from this.—Rafaelkelvin (talk) 15:19, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I forget it, the IP is 190.118.210.133. I don't know if you can contact with a checkuser, because I think the user Eagle c5 of spanish wikipedia is the same IP that is editing this article, eagle c5 was blocked for adding false information.—Rafaelkelvin (talk) 15:27, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
