Nakoula Basseley Nakoula (born c. 1957), also known by numerous aliases, is an American Coptic Christian filmmaker who serves as manager for the company that produced the anti-Muslim film Innocence of Muslims. The trailers for the film, after they were dubbed into Arabic, were cited during the 2012 U.S. diplomatic missions attacks.
Criminal career
The Daily Beast reported that Nakoula was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on March 27, 1997 and charged with intent to manufacture methamphetamine. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Nov. 3, 1997 to one year in Los Angeles County Jail and three years probation. He declared bankruptcy in 2000. According to the D.A.’s office he violated probation on April 8, 2002, and was re-sentenced to another year in county jail.
Nakoula pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay $794,701 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. Following his release in June 2011, he was ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer. According to Associated Press, "Prior to his bank fraud conviction, Nakoula struggled with a series of financial problems," including a $106,000 lien filed against him in 1997 and a $191,000 tax lien in 2006.
