The current arbitration committee pays lip service to supporting the administrators enforcing its decisions, but its actions instead devalue the work of those admins, circumscribe the admin discretion necessary for AE to function, encourage meritless appeals of AE decisions, and greatly diminish the efficiency of the AE process. Even worse, the same committee has frequently shirked its responsibility to actually decide cases that come before it, preferring instead to simply slap the topic area with the discretionary sanctions - the same discretionary sanctions whose effectiveness this committee repeatedly undermined. For these reasons and others that I will explain in greater detail in an essay I'm currently drafting, I will no longer participate in AE, and I strongly encourage my fellow administrators to do the same, leaving this committee to enforce its own decisions. I'm strongly tempted to lift all my previous AE actions right now and save the committee the inconvenient task of pretending to respect my judgment; but for now I will leave them as they are, until this committee decides to override them on a whim. Appeals of my previous AE actions should be directed to AE, as I will no longer consider any appeal directed to me. I have no objections to my fellow administrators modifying them as they think appropriate. T. Canens (talk) 02:09, 10 November 2012 (UTC) |

May I ask a question?
See WP:CIVIL
A number of years ago, whilst in poor mental health, I made a number of remarks that were considered uncivil. You know I've never shrank from it, I've never tried to excuse my conduct, I've apologised repeatedly and unreservedly, pretty much everyone agreed it was uncharacteristic and its never been repeated.
Yet its brought up again and again and again.
So my question is, having once been sanctioned for an uncivil remark, do I now wear the mark of Cain for ever? Can I expect to simply have to put up with people referring to a very painful episode, even though they know it upsets me? Is there a wikipedia policy that I'm unaware of, that considers editors can never put the past behind them even if they consistently demonstrate civil behaviour? - I sympathize with your situation, but I'm not sure what can be done about it. Your history is public and no policy that I'm aware of says that you can't refer to someone's past misconduct simply due to the passage of time. I think the logic is that if you are behaving, people would have no reason to dig into your history. In some cases, if it rises to the level of harassment, we can consider an interaction ban, but beyond that, the only way I'm aware of that will completely put your past behind you is a properly executed WP:CLEANSTART. - WP:CIVIL does, but that is simply ignored. To continuously refer to it, is also a presumption of bad faith, especially if there has been no repeat and it was out of character. And it has been harassment from my perspective but that is simply airily dismissed and not dealt with. If I get upset about it and complain, I'm being "warlike".
