The Venus Project is a social change and urban planning project founded by engineer, Jacque Fresco. The project aims to educate and develop a highly automated, resource based economy where human labor and intervention becomes a thing of the past.
History
In 1953, Jacque Fresco, a former Douglas Aircraft, Army Air Force, and Madman Muntz engineer, developed Project Americana, a new machine-planned city where sensitive machines would react to our environment and direct other machines "all without the intervention of man." In 1971, he incorporated the nonprofit, Sociocyberneering, Inc. which emphasized an approach of "machines and technology to free man" and the application of high science and technology towards problem solving. In 1974, some of Fresco's and The Venus Project's early designs were shown on an interview with Larry King. In 2002, Fresco published the book, The Best That Money Can't Buy which explained "the purpose of this technology is to free people from repetitive and boring jobs." In 2003, he and Roxanne Meadows incorporated the nonprofit, Future by Design Inc. in Venus, Florida. In 2006, the documentary, Future by Design was released and featured more designs, models, and description of an automated, "resource based society." In 2012, the documentary, Paradise or Oblivion was released, which assessed the current market based economy and elaborated on an automated, resource based economy.
In other media
The Venus Project was featured in the 2008 documentary, Zeitgeist: Addendum. Following the film, The Zeitgeist Movement was established as the activist arm of The Venus Project. Fresco was also featured in the 2011 documentary, Zeitgeist: Moving Forward. In April 2011, The Venus Project formally disassociated itself from The Zeitgeist Movement as it felt the movement was not representing the direction and needs of the project.
