Help with infobox template creation

I come here kind of converted (after I reverted you many times) and ask for your help in creating an infobox template. I managed to use an existing one in Chor von St. Bonifatius and got help for the pic cropping ;) Now I would like to have one for the Bach cantatas (about 200) and started, after the model choir, here. One problem I see: the page name (example BWV 40: Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes, BWV 40) is not the wanted name, only the text portion of it, the BWV # should go separately. Where to place Johann Sebastian Bach? Please feel free to change and advise, perhaps right there, I'll watch, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:05, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

You have separate |name= and |title= parameters; is that deliberate, or is one redundant? |name= will default to using the page's title, if you don't enter a value, but if you enter, say |name=Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes that will display. Do all the cantatas have German names; and should we also include an English translation? Are there cantatas by other composers, for whom this infobox could also be used? I've moved the template to {{Infobox Bach cantata}} and made some tweaks, and will do more once you've answer this. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:40, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! (I didn't know enough to tell the difference between title and name, nor about the default, learning.) I thought about it some more and think we might expand it to Bach compositions in general, then we might use the BWV number for the title and have the (longish) German title in smaller print. I am not enthusiastic about a translation, because there are always several, none of them is a title, only attempts, not even the German ones are titles, they are known by the first line of text, - some make sense, others not. I also thought about more parameters like key, number of movements, number of chorales. Actually, then every chorale might get a year/poet/composer. The German WP has always the same picture of old Bach, but that is way too old for 95% of his compositions. I would rather use one for the first location of performance. - After polishing a bit more we should discuss it with project Classical, of course ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:10, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I shall look forward to that. Are you happy to proceed with the changes you suggest, or do you need help from me? Shout if and when you do. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I will sing when I need help, more likely tomorrow. (watching here) - As I complete surprise, I heard BWV 36 yesterday! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:29, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

I changed a bit, started {{Infobox Bach composition}}, and announced that, (keeping the other in case 2 are wanted). If "composition", the variables for voices would be optional. Assuming we wanted several variables for each chorale (title, poet, year, composer), how would that look? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:17, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I added "type", and followed the date example in BWV 36 and 152. Could you please start the documentation? It looks like it's there to stay ;) - Where can we define the abbreviations for scoring? At present they are in the List of Bach cantatas, linked for cantatas but not other works, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:01, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Done. I've moved the scoring to the end, under a linked sub-heading. Note the markup in the example, which is different from that in the live article. Please copy it back there if or when you're happy with it. Do you think, for example, that {{abbr|Cemb|cembalo}}, which renders as Cemb, would be better if it was entered as {{abbr|Cemb|harpsichord}} and rendered as Cemb? (You may get a pop-up "tool-tip", if you hover your mouse over those, depending on which browser you use). We could create a template for each, such as {{harpsichord}}, to make data entry more intuitive; but not all the desired names may be available.

Also, I note that you have "ATB" (no spaces) but "S A T B" (with spaces). Perhaps both should be rendered as a list, using {{flatlist}}? For example:

  • S
  • A
  • T
  • B

and perhaps "2Co" should be rendered as "2×Co"?

Finally (for now!) can {{Infobox Bach cantata}} be redirected to {{Infobox Bach composition}}, or deleted? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:46, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your ideas! Beginning in the end: the questions (one or two templates, if one which name) should be answered by (slow) Classical music, let's perhaps redirect cantata for now. Its A T B for the soloists because they almost always sing one after the other, SATB because they sing almost always together, both consistent with the infobox in German. SATB is so common an abbreviation that I would hesitate to spell it out. The abbr for instruments are not quite as common, but well known among musicians, - for the others: it's all there in prose in the article. Let's keep thinking. Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:06, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I'll do the redirect shortly. Abbreviations need to be marked up as shown, even if they are explained elsewhere in the article. You could use, say, {{abbr|SATB|soprano, alto, tenor and bass}}. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:14, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
To write "soprano, alto, tenor and bass" is like writing "Doctor" instead of "Dr.", "International Business Machines" instead of "IBM", would you? SATB even has an article, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:22, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
For the latter, probably not, as "IBM" is, I believe, now the formal name of the company. For "doctor", certainly - and that is far more widely understood by the general public than "SATB". If SATB exists, then it should be a link in the infobox. ] should do it; it renders as SATB. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:37, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

More general

Did you see my question on Classical about {{Infobox musical composition}}? Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:06, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I've added |Key=, {{para|Movements}] and |Related=. I'll happily do the rest, if you can be a little more specific. Do you want all the text and scoring parameters from {{Infobox Bach composition}}? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:32, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Actually, we would need much more if we wanted to cover the instruments of a 20th century orchestra. One step after the other, I would say, and ask the project ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Feel free to draw up a list once you've one that, and I'll implement it for you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:49, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
(ec) I started here, scoring could just say string orchestra (as here), wind quintet, large orchestra, piano trio, without specifying instruments for the moment. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:51, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
next Agnus Dei (Barber) (remember, written with dedication): I think room for a pic would be good, could be composer or score - or nothing, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:18, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
There's |Cover= for images. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:50, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Composers

Thanks, helped, - how about composers? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:33, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

{{Infobox person}} or {{Infobox musical artist}} (the latter particularly for performing composers, like Michael Nyman) . {{Infobox composer}} exits, but is a hamstrung version of the former, designed only to prevent its features being used, and with no benefits. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:46, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I tried the performer on Graham Waterhouse, a start. I can see why the project isn't happy with the infobox ;) I don't need the heading "background" - what else? For a European person, I would prefer ddmmyyyy format for the birthday. I would like to mention where he studied, teachers, notable works. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:23, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Some members of that project are not happy with any infobox. I've fixed the date display for you, using |df=y in the date template. You can, of course, propose changing or removing the heading, on the infobox's talk page. Or just switch to {{Infobox person}}, which also has the additional fields you desire. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:43, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for help and precision ;) Good comment on Cosima! I will look at Person again, I must have missed parameters, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:49, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Specifically, |education= and |alma_mata=for studying. And thank you for your kind words; its a pleasure to work with you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:59, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Shared pleasure! I found education and added works, including my grave dance. I miss - for a composer - publisher and label. Getting closer to presenting to the project ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:22, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I was challenged about Bach and thought about him ;) - He was active at distinct times in different locations, different types of works those locations. Is there a way to show that in an infobox? He's probably not the only one. - Cosima: of course all these FAs don't have an infobox because they are mostly composers, - what a surprise; --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

If Bach's periods of activity are distinct and named, you could have a |period= parameter. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:44, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Not there yet in "person", right? any other, with example? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:55, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry; misunderstood. You could perhaps use Infobox person's |style=, |movement=, or |years_active=, entering multiple values using {{Plainlist}}. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:59, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Let me understand: so far I avoided "style" as too narrow, "movement" showed as political, - I would like to list concertos in Köthen (certain time), cantatas in Leipzig (later), simple approach, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:16, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
JSB
Years active
  • 1703–08 (Weimar, Arnstadt, Mühlhausen}
  • 1708–17 (Return to Weimar}
  • 1717–23 (Köthen)

Something like the adjacent, perhaps Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:22, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Looks good! Then perhaps add times/places to works for the connection? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:48, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Sure. I've done some work on City of Bath Bach Choir, BTW. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:14, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Seen ;) - could use a lot of work, many more compositions should be linked, today I found a cantata with the wrong BWV # ... - but I'm still working on a cantata for New Year's Day ;) - watch my Bach sandbox for the composer, next year --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi there

I saw this edit:

Could you tell me more? I thought we don't use symbols like TM and (R), as noted in Misplaced Pages:Trademark. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 17:26, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Why, then, do we have that template? Do feel free to apply WP:BRD, though.Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:40, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
You noted an OTRS ticket in the edit summary, that's why I'm asking. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 22:57, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Hallo Andy,

Thank you so much for publishing our brand new article, Fanie de Jager.

How do we go about checking to see how many times the article has been read?

Also, please advise us how to translate the article in - Afrikaans, Belguim, German, Italian, etc.?

Many thanks. Martin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JaqMar House (talkcontribs) 23:06, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Change photo from BW to Colour

Thanks Andy,

Re: Fanie de Jager.

We would like to replace the top photo from BW to the colour one, as we now have a colour photo available to use.

How do we do this?

Kole Imports Wikiepedia Page _ Any help greatly appreciated.

Dear Andy,

Regarding the Kole Imports wikipedia page: I put up as many articles I could find that have a url - the rest are in print and I don't know how it would work to scan/send over. The articles were written by 3rd party sources about us in industry publications but they are being deemed as Marketing Spam or "Crap".

Is there any way the page can be stripped to just show name, founding date, basic history, and 1 line stating what our business does and where we import from?

We have been around for over 30 years and have helped the dollar industry become what it is today, we were one of the first importers of dollar goods from China and partnered with 99 Cent Only Stores to make them what they are today. I feel that people should at least be able to look up our history because it has helped shape/change things. Even before getting this job, I looked at the Kole Imports wikipedia page to get insight into and facts about the company.

I definitely see the way it is now as being slightly spammy and there is much that should be taken down. What if it only had this up until we could find notable sources, "According to the Better Business Bureau, the company was founded in 1985 by brothers Rob and Danny Kole." ? Could that work?

Please, let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Joint biography and WP:CAT

Hi. At Template talk: Authority control#Joint biography you added remark "+1" about putting redirects in categories.

I am not ready to make any category, redirect or merge suggestions and this isn't about Authority control or its template so let me reply here.

Concerning my own example joint biography, Janet and Allan Ahlberg:

Now i see that 21 February 2012‎ Pichpich has put the two Ahlberg redirects in appropriate categories, and removed substantial article, per WP:RCAT. (edit Janet) (edit Allan) (edit joint)
How painful. Thus visitors to the biography see no cats but those deemed appropriate for the joint article alone rather than the redirects.
That doesn't work for readers or editors. No surprise, the Ahlberg joint biography is back in all of its February categories, and more (in four June/July edits, the last two by me). --P64 (talk) 20:40, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Info-boxes

Andy, (so sorry about my idiotic confusion about your username chez Solti the other day) as you are keen on info-boxes may I ask for your help on an info-box question? When I began upgrading the article on Alec Douglas-Home, there were two clashing info-boxes, one on politics and one on cricket, – different widths and it all looked ghastly and messed the layout up something shocking. I couldn't find a way of making the latter merge with the former, and took a chance and left the cricket box out. It would be good to have it back (I am strongly pro userboxes for cricket articles, as they are clearly helpful to the reader) and if you have any suggestions for merging it with the existing box it will be esteemed a favour. Regards. – Tim Riley (talk) 23:16, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

It's always a little awkward where we have two infoboxes about on subject in an article, but there are so few instances it's probably not worth the effort to develop a technical fix for all cases. Were {{Infobox officeholder}} based on {{Infobox}}, it may be possible with some changes to it, to use the cricketer infobox as a module (a sub-template). but since it;s not (yet), that would require conversion, first. that would require discussion on {{Infobox officeholder}}'s talk page. Otherwise, I'm ambivalent about whether or not there should be a second, separate, cricketer, infobox in this article, but a reasonable approach would be to canvass opinions on its talk page. I know what you man about Infoboxes' helpfulness to the reader; that's why the Solti box should be restored. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:46, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much for that, Andy. I think I may have raised the point in passing at PR or FAC on the Home article, but I'll certainly follow your advice and raise it now on the article talk page. (I have a fleeting memory of seeing somewhere something about combining info-boxes, and with luck someone may steer me in that direction from the talk page.) With best wishes, and grateful thanks for your colleaguely response. Tim Riley (talk) 20:09, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Template_talk:Infobox_officeholder#Formatting of name & honorifcs

I've got a bot ready to remove <br> tags at the end of parameters in infoboxes and before honorific-suffix. I have prior approval to fix WP:CHECKWIKI problems and this is covered under id#59.

Magiolidits did most of the work. However he is going to be busy for awhile and asked me to do it.

Before I do it, I thought I'd ask an expert about it. Is it ok to run? Should I wait until approval is granted to remove the small tag? Anything else you can think of? Bgwhite (talk) 03:11, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I guess one run is better than two; but what approval is needed, to remove the small tag? Oh, and don't forget to add a space, if necessary, when removing the <br>. Thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:32, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
I like to get all my ducks in a row before doing something. In this case, it is a "drastic" change that will anger a few people, so I really want things to be kosher. I'll start doing some test runs today and if everything looks fine, start the bot tomorrow. I'll tell you when everything starts up. Bgwhite (talk) 21:53, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
I've started the bot and it is off and running. I did about 500 test cases. The only problem found is if the br tag is before a small tag at the end... honorific-suffix=<small>Jane Doe<br></small>. Bot will remove small tags, but not the br. This can be remedied at the next database dump in 12 days.
The edit summary message I'm leaving is: Remove br/small tags from honorifics in Infobox per Template talk:Infobox officeholder#Formatting of name & honorifcs. br tags now in infobox code. Line spacing will be altered in infobox code once tags are gone.
Oi vey, I have a feeling alot of complaints will be coming to my talk page. Bgwhite (talk) 18:58, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
I suggest you refer any such comments to the template talk page. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:06, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

The initial run of 8,500 names is complete. This run contained any article whose honorific began with <small> and/or <br> tags. There is a WP:CHECKWIKI error that contains any parameter in an infobox that ends with <br>. There are 24,000 articles than fall under this error and the majority are not biographies. The bot will run on these cases next. This should handle any honorific that ends with <br>, but did not begin with <br> or <small>. So, any adjusting you need to make to the line spacing can be done. Man it is sure is ugly with no space between the lines. Bgwhite (talk) 07:44, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. Once we've got the markup crud out of the way, I hope we can have a sensible, centralised, discussion about how honorifics should be formatted, across all, our biographical infoboxes. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:04, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Gadget Boy (2013 TV series)

Hey, I'm not able to see the OTRS ticket for this, mind giving a little background? I don't need excessive detail or anything. Thanks! Peace, delldot ∇. 02:27, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Actually, never mind, someone else already helped me figure it out, it's gone. Peace, delldot ∇. 02:43, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for quality contributions toward "improving, standardising and rationalising templates, especially infoboxes" such as the growing one for Bach's compositions, for "gently reminding ... don't own sections of Misplaced Pages" to freely share in the sum of all knowledge: you are an awesome Wikipedian!

I am a bit confused

about a recent edit of yours at Carleton W. Angell. You appear to me to have added a category, "Date of death missing" but the date is in the article and as a category. Or am I missing something? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:39, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

We have the year, but not the date (e.g. 23 April). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:50, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Ah ha. Since this is an article of interest to me, I shall go looking. Carptrash (talk) 18:57, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

I see you've found them; but please cite your sources. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:22, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
I've added the source, but I must say that you have your work cut out for you if you are going to request sources for all birth dates. I suggest that you try Barak Obama next. Carptrash (talk) 18:51, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
It's a core Misplaced Pages policy. As for BO; see Barack Obama#cite_note-biography-1. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:54, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

That would be "The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material,"? Sorry to bring up BO, I just an skeptical that many biographies include references for birth/death dates. However I will check and have no problem being wrong. Carptrash (talk) 19:18, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 24

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Querying your position on notability

Hi Andy, I am wanting to understand how we can differ so much on Misplaced Pages's notability (WP:BIO) policy.

  • On Misplaced Pages:Articles_for_deletion/Rev._Samuel_Gibert_Scott, why would you argue for retention of the Scott article? (I can find no reason to keep it.) I also think it odd that you created this article from AfC immediately after it was declined by Avs5221 for the same reasons it has now been nominated for deletion.
  • At User_talk:Romariem#Eric_Brooke_Dunlop you have argued that the two obituaries on Dunlop offer notability for Dunlop, yet the one I could read had no content indicating notability. Are you saying the fact that Dunlop has these two obituaries is in itself grounds for notability?

I am not wanting to attack you, nor am I looking for a fight. I just want to understand your position. Regards, David_FLXD (Talk) 05:13, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

The sources in each article satisfy WP:ANS. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:51, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Live List Check?

Hello! I finally finished converting List of public art in Milwaukee into your fancy table system, and I made it live yesterday. If you see anything there I could improve, please let me know. All in all, I am happy with how it looks, and I am very grateful for the improvements to the table format/template--thank you! --Jgmikulay (talk) 04:40, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Looks good. I've made some tweaks; chiefly that {{Coord}}'s name parameter should not be used inside {{Public art row}}. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:08, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Infoboxes

Hi Andy. I made Template:Location map South Georgia. But most of the articles in Category:Mountains and hills of South Georgia have no infobox or map. Could you or somebody who know copy the Mount Cunningham and Admiralty Peak examples and add infoboxes/pin maps to the others?♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 14:45, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Location templates aren't my forte, sorry. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:41, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Not appropriate

This edit goes against WP:TALK, specifically WP:TALKO. Please stop editing my comments. I can format them the way I want. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 01:21, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

This is your response to a discussion where I called you out for making an unsubstantiated allegation against me, and challenged you provide evidence or retract it? Shame on you! Don't return to this page until you have done one of those things. Oh, and WP:TALK says "Some examples of appropriately editing others' comments... Fixing format errors that render material difficult to read". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:36, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

December 2012

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours for edit warring. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.  Mark Arsten (talk) 17:49, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

This user is asking that his block be reviewed:

Request reason:

My last edit to that article was over 27 hours ago; that was the first and only edit I'd made to the article in over 5 days. Further, I have been engaged in the meanwhile in attempts to to reach consensus on that article's talk page. This block is not preventative. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:54, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Please read our guide to appealing blocks to make sure that your unblock request will help your case. You may change your request at any time.
Administrator use only:

If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, replace this template with the following, replacing "blocking administrator" with the name of the blocking admin:

{{Unblock on hold |1=blocking administrator |2=My last edit to that article was over 27 hours ago; that was the first and only edit I'd made to the article in over 5 days. Further, I have been engaged in the meanwhile in attempts to to reach consensus on that article's talk page. If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following code, substituting {{subst:Decline reason here}} with a specific rationale. Leaving the decline reason unchanged will result in display of a default reason, explaining why the request was declined.

{{unblock reviewed |1=My last edit to that article was over 27 hours ago; that was the first and only edit I'd made to the article in over 5 days. If you accept the unblock request, replace this template with the following, substituting Accept reason here with your rationale:
