Decline reason:

WP:OFFER does not say "simply wait 6 months, and you're golden" - if that was the case, we would have only blocked for 6 months. In your unblock request, you must make a WP:GAB-compliant request, that is enhanced by the requirements in WP:OFFER. We can then open a discussion on AN. Considering that, in July, you said "I understand WP:OFFER, but I would never agree to those terms as my interests don't coincide with it", I would think the onus is on you to start a WP:OFFER discussion here by telling us your current thoughts, whether you have changed your mind and now agree with the terms, whether you have in fact followed them, and how your approach to editing Misplaced Pages will be different if you are unblocked. Once you have done that, if an admin feels there is merit in considering your request, they may then choose to start a discussion at WP:AN - but until we actually see the substance of your request, there's nothing to discuss. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 23:47, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

To whom it may concern,

I hereby make my WP:GAB-compliant request per the terms of WP:OFFER. I do not wish to edit Misplaced Pages at this time except to request a change of my username. In the future, if I for some reason have a desire to edit somewhere other than Misplaced Pages:Changing_username or perhaps WP:BN, I will request it formally. Even if User:Boing! said Zebedee is successful in effecting a username change through back-channel means, I would still like to be able to do this as quickly as possible, so if he should fail, I would still like to be able to pursue options myself as a "user in good standing". As is oft the case on Misplaced Pages, there are any number of anti-social wikilawyers who rather than engage in meaningful discussion will simply shut down a conversation with an insipid appeal to process. You are not being truthful in that claim. As I suggested in my email reply to you, you should explain here what you told me and why you want to rename your account - or if you feel it is too personal to talk about in public, let me know by email as I suggested and I will be happy to pursue it for you. That way, your request to rename your account can be considered outside of any unblock request. The last thing I expected was to be accused in public of "yet to meaningfully attempt to have a conversation or even be nice to me". Yes, I just got your e-mail. It is extremely frustrating from my end to be given the run around. Please read this discussion for background and advise. I was told on the IRC that the only way I would be allowed to change my username was to get into good standing. WP:OFFER was mentioned by User:EdJohnston. This is my attempt to do this. Waiting six months while attack pages continue to link here and sully my IRL name was annoying, but it would be fantastic if you all could see it in your hearts to just change my name to something other than this one. Editor's name could be changed if we are sure there will be no more socking

In a quick check, I did not see any obvious IP socks that have been active in the last six months (since 14 July, 2012). There is one registered account that I'll submit for consideration at SPI if ScienceApologist decides to pursue WP:OFFER. Since any change of name interferes with sock enforcement, I see no reason to consider that step if SA still holds the view that he expressed on this talk page on 21 July 2012: "I understand WP:OFFER, but I would never agree to those terms as my interests don't coincide with it.." He went on to insist that he would continue to contribute using IPs. So I'd like to hear a promise to stop evading his block using IPs as part of his case for a name change. There will be a string of sock cases with the same user name. The user name serves as the mnemonic that helps people to remember the issues. A new identity with an obscure name will not allow people to make the association. If you want to 'bury' the history then you shouldn't be consciously planning to continue the behavior that led to the sock enforcement. EdJohnston (talk) 18:19, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Certainly you could change the mnemonic, right? Why not change the case pages to a new identity? I offered this as a solution and heard nothing. It's the actual name that's the problem because of external links. Change the url here at Misplaced Pages and the problem is solved. Can't you guys just learn a new mnemonic? Is that too much to ask? I'm not trying to "bury" any history. After all, the "history" feature of Misplaced Pages is one of the best features of this site because it provides security through obscurity inasmuch as a casual web user will not encounter diffs and archival material. I'm not asking to bury history and changing a username really ought to have no bearing on whether you can play wack-a-mole efficiently. jps (talk) 18:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

(a) stay away from Misplaced Pages entirely for no less than six months (that means IP editing included)

(b) not apply for an {{unblock}} for six months

(c) agree to this on the new user talk page.
