Good afternoon, | |||
I am a Communications Specialist writing on behalf of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners. As the local government body serving St. Johns County, our organization has a vested interest in the content written on the Misplaced Pages page designated for our region. In our efforts to provide residents, visitors, and external viewers with the most up-to-date and factual information regarding St. Johns County, we recently established a Misplaced Pages account to offer edits and improvements to the page. Out of respect and consideration for the rules and guidelines detailed by Misplaced Pages, we have made consistent efforts to offer content which we feel supports Misplaced Pages’s goals of sharing unbiased, community based, and reference backed information. Though we are extremely proud of St. Johns County and would love to fill the Misplaced Pages page with endless accolades, we recognize our responsibility to offer site visitors neutral information. We welcome any feedback on how best to balance these efforts. As an example, we would like to share the fact that St. Johns County has been recognized as having the number one school district in the state. There are numerous references explaining this recognition, how it was established, and what it means for our residents and the future of St. Johns County. With your help, we hope to share this type of County fact on Misplaced Pages in an appropriate fashion. Thank you in advance for your time.

Global user manager
I have a question about the global user manager (no problems, I am just curious about how it works). When I look at https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special%3ACentralAuth&target=Jimbo+Wales I see several values for "Method" which I assume means authentication method.
I see a lot of "created on login" which appears to happen whenever you read the other Misplaced Pages while logged on to the English wikipedia and I see "home Wiki" and "not attached" which are pretty obvious.
I also see "confirmed by password" and "confirmed by email". I am curious as to under what circumstances those are added. Is it because some wikis require an email or a password to log on while others don't? --Guy Macon (talk) 01:30, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- It indicates how accounts were attached to the unified login. You will mostly see this on older pre-SUL accounts (all new accounts are unified by default) but also on accounts that were merged for some other reason. An example of the latter would be when accounts from Wikitravel (not Wikimedia) were migrated to Wikivoyage (Wikimedia's fork of Wikitravel) and merged to the users' SUL accounts. From the (?) tooltips "confirmed by email: Indicates that the local account was merged because its email address matched the email address of the main account." "confirmed by password: Indicates that the local account was merged because user specified a valid password for it.". jonkerz ♠talk 02:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! --Guy Macon (talk) 09:13, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Looking at the output of the global user manager, how does one get a "Hidden Level"? While it sounds neat, if Jimbo doesn't have it, I don't know who would. 1/2 :)Naraht (talk) 13:48, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- It isn't as cool as it sounds ("I killed the dragon and unlocked the hidden level!") it just means that the username is hidden from global user lists. Not sure if you can just ask for that or whether you have to have a reason for wanting it.
- Why doesn't that page have any documentation attached? --Guy Macon (talk) 14:17, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Special pages aren't (in some sense) pages - they are database reports. As far as I know, none of them have a talk/discussion page. That's probably something that could be designed around, but it hasn't been, so far, apparently. But they can have information at the top of the report - see, for example, the Recent Changes "page". I'm not sure who (an admin, at minimum; perhaps a developer?) would be able to modify a page (report) to add such information. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:58, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Admins can edit the MediaWiki namespace which contains many interface messages. The top of Special:RecentChanges displays MediaWiki:Recentchanges-summary and MediaWiki:Recentchangestext. If you add
?uselang=qqx
to a url (or&uselang=qqx
for urls' which already have a?
earlier) then the names of used MediaWiki messages should be shown in parentheses. http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special%3ARecentChanges&uselang=qqx shows "(recentchanges-summary)" near the top, but for unknown reasons it still displays the content of MediaWiki:Recentchangestext instead of displaying "(recentchangestext)". At Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)#uselang=qqx displays message instead of its name I have asked why. https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special%3ACentralAuth&target=Jimbo+Wales&uselang=qqx shows lots of message names but none of them are in a good position for documentation. is it permitted to restore a dispute resolution noticeboard issue, which was auto archived
Hi, this dispute resolution noticeboard issue was auto archived while active.
- Is it permitted to restore it?
- OR, should I open it again? Ykantor (talk) 03:50, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hello. I am a dispute resolution volunteer at the Misplaced Pages Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. First, let me answer the general question, then I will get into the specifics of your case. In general, dispute resolution volunteers can do whatever they think will help to resolve the dispute, so either re-opening or refiling is an option. It is generally a bad idea for someone in a dispute to do things like unarchiving, because others in the dispute may object. I will be happy to do it for you, but first let's talk about it a bit and discuss why you might or might not want to. As for refiling, anyone can refile at any time. The only question is whether you want to do that. The rest of my response is about this specific dispute, and that isn't really the kind of thing the help desk does, so I am going to continue this on the article talk page. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:06, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Offer of paid editing in China?
Hey there, I am not a Misplaced Pages editor, but I do read it often. I am on a business trip in Chengdu, China with my legal firm, based in Newark, New Jersey. When I was in Starbucks, in Chengdu, I was approached by a smartly dressed Chinese man, asking if I wanted paid work in editing Misplaced Pages profiles for people. I declined naturally, but I just thought I would let you guys know that this is going on.
All the best, Ralph. --Ralph McCulsky (talk) 10:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for this notification. We're aware that there are many editors who are paid to edit, but the Misplaced Pages rules do not strictly ban such behaviour. Instead, paid editors are strongly discouraged from editing if there are conflict of interest reasons. However, when paid editing is benign, Misplaced Pages takes no action at all. — Richard BB 10:47, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Paid editing may be a good way to encourage more people to join Misplaced Pages in a few years as regulars are declining. If what's wrote is neutral and notable then personally i don't see a problem. Much better that it's in the open than hidden. That way it can be watched over at least. I believe some Wikipedians take a more harsh view though. Thanks ツ Jenova20 3:13 pm, Today (UTC+1)
Knowledge Graph
When one searches for a person who has a Misplaced Pages page using Google one usually gets a so-called knowledge graph/panel, on the right-hand side of the page displaying the search results, which links to the Misplaced Pages page of that person. However for some people no knowledge panel shows up in a Google search, despite the fact that they have a Misplaced Pages page---Can you please clarify why this is so? My guess is that this might happen for people with recently created Misplaced Pages pages, as Google might need some time to link to them, but I might be mistaken.Dspinside (talk) 11:25, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

- You might find someone to help you at relevant WikiProjects - look on the Talk pages of the articles concerned - click the the "Discussion" tab. The first question you'll be asked is "Do you have good reliable sources?" because "I say so" is not a verifiable citation. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:30, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- It's a really good idea to (a) post your sources to the article talk page (even if not online); and (b) do a rough draft of what you'd like to add - limiting this to what is contained in acceptable sources, again, posting this at the article talk page. You're a lot more likely to find a volunteer if you've done these two things first, and you mention having done them, when asking for editing help. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Creating a Misplaced Pages page for Alloy Digital
Good Afternoon,
I work for Alloy Digital (http://www.alloydigital.com/). I am having a difficult time getting through to the e-mail address info-enwikimedia.org.
Our company is trying to create a master Misplaced Pages page (named Alloy Digital) as many of our owned and operated brands have created them. I began editing a page for Alloy Digital last week and it was immediately flagged by a couple of users. A couple of minutes later, it was taken down. So, a few colleagues and I edited the wording to prevent it from being “promotional”…It was then purely factual. I hadn’t even had the chance to cite my sources before it was taken down again…and then again. I was then blocked from creating this page. Hundreds of other media companies have Misplaced Pages pages, and I was just wondering if there was any insight you could provide me with in order to create ours. Thank you in advanced for your help!

- Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia containing articles about notable subjects, supported by references from previously published reliable sources. An article about your company will not be your page - once created, articles are open to editing by anyone. The presence of articles on "hundreds of other media companies" is irrelevant to the question of whether Alloy Digital should have an article written about them. We also discourage writing about something you have a close personal connection with. Some guidance can be found in Misplaced Pages's policies covering conflict of interest and the notability of companies. Finally, Misplaced Pages is not a place to promote your company. Astronaut (talk) 18:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Regarding "I hadn’t even had the chance to cite my sources before it was taken down again…and then again", that's why we encourage people to write drafts of articles in user pages (as WikiDan61 has done), rather than where real encyclopedia articles exist. Because as well-intentioned as you might have been to cite sources, not surprisingly there are lots of people who don't have sources to cite, or expect others to add the citations - and it's really difficult (as in, impossible) to distinguish between your case (citations later) and their case (citations never). -- John Broughton (♫♫) 01:40, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- The new page has been created (see Alloy Digital). Non-promotional, and based on published sources. Feel free to expand. WikiDan61ReadMe!! 14:13, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Logo
Hello,
In March we had our logo updated in our wiki page (File:St._Thomas_University_(Florida).gif). We have had a very difficult time trying to get our Google results to show the new updated logo. In Google results the old thumbnail of our old logo is still showing and when the image is hovered it is showing us the wiki url of the image. We have already removed the urls with Google and we have deleted the old logo image from our site. However it is still showing. We were told to wait until the site was recrawled but we think this is not the problem. We need the old logo image purged from wikipedia. How can we do this? This is really important to us, we are a university and our logo is imperative for our prospective students. Can someone help us? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onl9onl9 (talk • contribs) 17:26, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- The new logo is correctly placed in the article - there's nothing else we can do. Perhaps Google can help you, it is after all their page that is showing the wrong logo, not ours. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- The old logo image was purged from Misplaced Pages months ago. We have no control over when or if Google replaces their old copy with the current image. You are right that Google displays a Misplaced Pages url when you hover over the image, but this does not mean their search page is actually displaying the image at Misplaced Pages. They are displaying the image they once copied and the url they copied it from. It's simple to code a page so any chosen text is displayed when you hover over an image. Google's search page with the image has a "Feedback / More info" link. If you click that then you can click "Wrong?" at the image. I just did with no effect, but if many people do it then Google may eventually remove the image. I don't know how they process feedback of this type but maybe it's best if they get the same feedback from multiple IP addresses. Note: If they actually remove the old image then I cannot say whether they will replace it with another image. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:49, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
'Article of the Day'
How do I nominate an article for 'Article of the Day'? -Kind Regards --Trimmed Steok (talk) 17:26, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

- I'm not sure how it works in detail as I've never proposed or requested an article myself. But only featured articles are considered, Sir, and as you can see on the request page, the process is kind of bureaucratic. jonkerz ♠talk 17:46, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- They have a range of criteria; anniversaries or things otherwise related to a specific day have a better chance for that day (for example, FAs on major candidates were together the Today's Featured Article for the day when the 2008 US presidential election was held), and due to the number of featured articles, an article really doesn't have a chance if it's appeared in the past. The other criteria are more subjective, if I remember rightly. Nyttend (talk) 20:22, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Bare URLs for citation warning still up

- New to Misplaced Pages, I did the best I could with the basics. Any clean-up assistance from Misplaced Pages experts is appreciated to make article better with the referenced material provided. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowswimmer (talk • contribs) 18:07, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- The fundamental problem is that the article dedicates very little space to the supposed reason that Pliuskaitis is notable in the first place, and a great deal to subsequent matters. Frankly, it is bordering on being seen as an attack page, and certainly needs substantial editing to comply with Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons policies. The whole thing is poorly sourced, and there is little justification that I can see for the long paragraph relating to the libel case. I am inclined to think that the article should be deleted unless it can be established, using better sourcing, that Pliuskaitis meets the notability guidelines, and if it is to be retained, the material concerning his ban etc will need substantial rewriting. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- I agree. In particular, the long paragraph is incoherent – it all hangs on "concern over Pliuskaitis’ approach to competitive swimming", and it does not even explain what was alleged to be wrong with his approach. Deleting that whole paragraph would improve the article. Maproom (talk) 20:46, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
No, the answer to the OP's question about a tag regarding bare URLs is because this version of the page had several bare URLs as references. This is susceptible to linkrot, so the more info we can add about references the better, most importantly the title and URL. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Do you have suggestions on how to make it appear less as an attack page? What do you recommend removing from the page to keep it from appearing as an attack page as you say it does? I am open to suggestions.
What “substantial editing” needs to be completed to comply with the Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living person policies? Please be more specific in your answer. Please elaborate on why “the whole thing is poorly sourced”, especially when news sources such as the Fairfax Times, Swimming World, and Reach for the Wall of the Washington Post are among the sources provided? Finally, please be more specific in your assertion that “substantial rewriting” is needed on the material concerning his ban. What “substantial rewriting” is needed? I will rewrite the paragraph concerning the court case Pliuskaitis v. Jotautas (1999) 47 O.R. (3d) 227 per your suggestions. Thank you for your feedback Snowswimmer (talk) 21:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- I think it's essentially an attack page, with a WP:BLP1E issue. If Pliuskaitis had not been banned by USA Swimming, there would be zero chance of this surviving as a Misplaced Pages article: There is a total of one local newspaper article about him that is cited in the article. (I exclude his being given an award, or his legal case being analyzed in a magazine, or the notable people he coached, none of which gets at the notion of notability as Misplaced Pages uses it.) In other words, the only possible reason why he's "notable" is because of one thing (the ban).
- Right now, it looks to me, we have an article about a guy who just (February 2013) became publicly known as having done something wrong, and - probably not coincidentally - a new editor, who is or was at the club (SNOW) that Pliuskaitis founded, wants there to be this Misplaced Pages article, so that the shameful information shows up really high in search engine results. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 02:06, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Or it could be an attempt to clear Michael Pliuskaitis's name by making more people aware and asking questions? XOttawahitech (talk) 03:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- The intent of the author of the article seems clear - see, for example, the final sentence of the initial version of the article. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 05:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- The original intent of the article was to dispel rumors (rumors that are much worse than what was and is in the Misplaced Pages article) circulating within the swimming world of the Northern Virginia area. The intent was to make others aware/give what was known based on news sources, not on rumors that were circulating on the pool deck and were vicious to the subject. My intent may have been skewed trying to create this entry (first time creating a Misplaced Pages entry) but as you can see I worked to eliminate the skewed sections with edits as I became more aware of what was expected of a Misplaced Pages entry and asked others for input to eliminate the skewed sections of the article. Another more experienced Misplaced Pages editor has offered to watch the page and has done a better job presenting the information correctly where I was admittedly not able to. I have previously informed the individual now watching the page that I will no longer be making any edits as I see that the screen name I created to make the page in the first place is a conflict of interest (I chose the screen name because I created the screen name just to make this entry about 1.) Snow and 2.) swimmers. in order to dispel the rumors circulating within the Northern Virginia area). Thank you all for your input, suggestions, and time. I am now done with my brief experience with Misplaced Pages. Snowswimmer (talk) 16:46, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Episode's plots/summaries
Just wanted to ask about the plot section on television series' episodes. If an editor writes a plot about the episode, by not using any sources but after seeing the episode, is that wrong? I mean, the source is the actual episode and the editor is writing a summary of it using their own words. Is it wrong to do it? Is this a "bad use"? I just suppose most of the plots are written that way since the majority of the plots I've seen don't have any sources on them. Same happens to the movies' plots that I had checked. Can't check every episode or every movie seperately but in almost all the ones I've checked, there are no sources for the plot. - Hi, primary sources can be used for summaries, but you have to make sure your write-up doesn't incorporate personal interpretation of themes, metaphors, meaning, etc. That's where you run afoul of the original research prohibition. :D Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:15, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

User:Zaid231/sandbox/
Hello Wiki editors! I'm writing in regards to an article in progress; If someone has a minute to look at my Sandbox (link is below), it'd be much appreciated. I have provided new 3rd party references and revised the content, per suggestions from other editors. Also, I was wondering if it'd be more advantageous to make 'Franchising' the focus of this article, as I'm able to provide add'l neutral (& informative) content on this subject, which is becoming increasingly popular. Thanks in advance for any help or feedback.

Zaid231 (talk) 21:11, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Two things. (1) Normally, we don't put a slash at the end of the pagename (for example, my sandbox is User:Nyttend/sandbox, not User:Nyttend/sandbox/), but that's entirely a personal choice, so you should keep using this name if you feel like it. (2) As of right now, the page has no reliable sources providing substantial coverage. There's really not much in the article published by wsRadio, and our article on wsRadio makes me think that they're an opinion source, which isn't something upon which encyclopedia articles should be based. Right now, you need to expand the page to demonstrate why the company is important and why it passes our inclusion standards; the current version makes it sound like a small no-name company without a chance at qualifying, so if you think it qualifies, you need to demonstrate that it's much more than what it sounds like right now. Bits about franchising would be a bad idea, unless I misunderstand what you mean: it sounds as if you're meaning adding a section about "Franchise Opportunities!", which generally isn't encyclopedic. Tables with empty spaces
I'm trying to create a table in wiki code, but for some reason the "empty" cells aren't showing up. For example, I'm trying to create a table that looks like this but it ends up looking like this:
Header 1 | Header 2 | Header 3 |
Stuff 1 | Stuff 2 | Stuff 3 |
Stuff 4 | ||
Stuff 5 |
It says on this page that you can use
to fill an empty cell, but how do you do that exactly? Thanks. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 22:44, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Something like this?
Header 1 | Header 2 | Header 3
Stuff 1 | Stuff 2 | Stuff 3 | ||
Stuff 4 | ||||
Stuff 5 |
- Just make the cells and leave them blank. Scarce2 (talk) 23:09, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- The problem is that you defined a table three cells wide, but only define cells for one column. Then you specify rowspan="5" but there are only three rows to span. The parser is just so confused. -- Gadget850 23:11, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, let's take the example from the help page.
Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 A B C D E F G H
- It says below that table that if you "use
rowspan="2"
for "G" androwspan="3"
for "F" to get another row below "G" & "F" won't work, because all (implicit) cells would be empty." If you do it anyway, it looks like this:
- It says below that table that if you "use
Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 A B C D E F G H
- It also says that you can "use
to fill an empty cell with dummy content". How do I do that? Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 23:28, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- It also says that you can "use
- By writing
in the cell. That's it. The cell must exist already. Writing
in a cell doesn't change the structure of the table, but it may make the column wider. I have tried to make a table like your link . I can only do it by making a fourth column either before or after the other columns. Without a fourth column, I don't know whether it's possible to make different top borders for Stuff 4 and Stuff 5.
- By writing
Header 1 Header 2 Header 3 Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3 Stuff 4 Stuff 5
Header 1 Header 2 Header 3 Stuff 1 Stuff 2 Stuff 3 Stuff 4 Stuff 5
- PrimeHunter (talk) 00:25, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello Sir/mam.
Myself John Sena, Basically i am a content writer. I have posted one article on my page but after three days somebody has removed that content. That guy says this content is for promotaional purpose. But It's not true. So please tell me how should create a page.
i will happy to help wikipedia in proving the contents. i hope you understood my problem.
Thanks John Sena — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnsena007 (talk • contribs) 06:04, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, we understand your problem. Your problem is that you are here to promote a business, as you did with this edit, and that is not what Misplaced Pages is for. You are not going to succeed. I advise you to give up. Maproom (talk) 07:16, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- We're all content writers. You should not be writing about your own business, or a business you are working for. That presents a clear conflict of interest. Maproom explained it perfectly. I'm only chiming in so that it's clear to you that promotion of any kind is unacceptable in the Misplaced Pages community. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 07:33, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- You not only promoted your business on your own page but also vandalised existing articles by adding spam links, e.g., , and several other edits. You are warned that if you continue in this way, your account will be permanently blocked from Misplaced Pages. kashmiri 09:57, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Glenn Melvyn page
Glenn Melvyn
Glenn Melvyn's daughter Janine Mackinlay would like to have a web page on this site with an information page about her father. Glenn Melvyn was a British actor who is credited on IMDb http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0578542/#Actor
A hugely influential but largely unknown writer and actor, he is also quoted in Ronnie Barkers autobiography “Ronnie Barker – The Authorised Biography” by Bob McCabe, it describes the early meeting of Glenn and Ronnie. “A quick trawl through The Stage soon secured some stage management work at Frank Fortescue’s Famous Players, a rep company based in Bramhall, Cheshire. It was here that Barker was to meet one of the most influential men in his career. Glenn Melvyn was the company’s leading man and the man who Barker claims ‘was to teach me everything I ever learned about comedy’. Glenn also taught Ronnie how to stutter and later in his career, Ronnie Barker would base his character Albert Awkright in “Open All Hours” on Glenn’s character Wally Binns from “The Love Match” and “Love and Kisses”. They went on to write many scripts together and when presented with the BAFTA lifetime achievement award in 2007, Ronnie mentioned Glenn at the start of his acceptance speech, with a credit for giving him his first break and teaching him how to stutter.
I am helping to pur the page together but can't quite get to grips with how the references and links work, so the page gets removed as being unvalidated.
Any help please. Thanks Keith on behalf of Janine (and Glenn) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Glennmelvyn (talk • contribs) 09:50, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that neither you nor Janine are advised to write this article, because your WP:conflict of interest will make it difficult for you to write in the neutral way required. If, after reading the link I gave, you decide to try, then I advise reading WP:your first article for advice on how to go about it. --ColinFine (talk) 12:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)I've added a
{{reflist}}
template to make the references work properly, but I'm afraid with the citations provided, the article won't be acceptable for Misplaced Pages. IMDb is not considered a reliable source, and neither are personal websites. McCabe's biography of Barker, if it contains some more information about Melvyn, would be a suitable source, but you'll need to locate and cite multiple, reliable, independent sources in order to show that Melvyn meets the basic notability requirements. If, as you say, he is "largely unknown", then it may not be possible to have an article about him here. Yunshui 雲水 12:35, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- With the greatest respect to Janine and her late father, please bear in mind that Misplaced Pages is not a memorial. Also be clear that you understand that any article published about Glenn Melvyn could be edited by any other other user at any time; an article's creator has no editorial control over the content. More help with referencing can be found at Misplaced Pages:Referencing for beginners. - Karenjc 13:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Per our usual practice I have moved the user page content to a subpage at User:Glennmelvyn/Glenn Melvyn.--ukexpat (talk) 13:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Article Rejection
Hi,
I'm writing an article on a business, Interim Partners, and my article was rejected because of 'bias'. I don't see how it is biased at all - I made sure to use facts, barely any adjectives and no promotion.
One of Interim Partners' competitors, Michael Page, has a Misplaced Pages page: http://en.wikipedia.org/Michael_Page_International. I closely followed pages of Interim Partners' competitors to ensure that I made a correct Misplaced Pages page. In my opinion, Interim Partners' Misplaced Pages page is unbiased, and it is certainly a lot less biased than the Misplaced Pages page that Michael Page have.
I would appreciate it if you could take a second look at the Interim Partners article I am creating (http://en.wikipedia.org/User:AimeeTreasure/sandbox) and either elaborate on how exactly the page is biased or allow me to publish the page.
I look forward to your reply.
Many thanks,
Aimée Treasure
- The reason your article was declined can be seen in the edit history - Declining submission: submission is written like an advertisement . Please read WP:CORP. You need to establish the company's notability in the article. At the moment your draft fails to do that and sections such as Corporate and Social Responsibility and Accreditation etc. make the draft look more like an advertisement for the company than an encyclopaedic article. As a comparison with the article you linked above (Michael_Page_International) you'll see that in the lead of that article basic notability is established with the phrase is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. CaptRik (talk) 12:19, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I've seen worse, to be honest - the text of the article needs a bit of tweaking, but generally isn't too bad. Problem is though, that none of the claims therein are verified by reliable sources, which is pretty much a deal-breaker for Misplaced Pages. The only source provided (the Sunday Times list) doesn't actually mention Interim Partners at all, and there's absolutely nothing in the page to suggest that the company meets the basic inclusion requirements for companies. Before you even start addressing any issues of bias, you need to find multiple, reliable, independent sources which write about Interim Partners in some level of detail, and which verify all of the information in your draft article. Then we can talk about any minor language fixes that need doing. Without sources, the article isn't going to last long even if it's the most neutrally-phrased page on the project. Yunshui 雲水 12:23, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- (Edit Conflict x2) Other issues i noticed:
- Your lede does not state very well what Interim Partners is. A lede paragraph should sum up informatively what the article is about and in an unbiased manner. See WP:Lede.
- You appear to have proof of notability in how the company ranks, but nothing outside of that from other sources (Similar to what CaptRik said). See WP:Notable.
- Your "Growth and Development" section contains links to other sites, which should not be there. Links to other sites should be either citations or fit into an External Links section at the bottom of the article (if appropriate).
- Other than that i'd say you haven't done too bad considering your Conflict of interest, but you do need to rewrite it a bit more for an encyclopaedia, than an advertisement.
- These are just issues i noticed after a quick glance. Good luck ツ Jenova20 12:25, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Biased article - doesn't reflect the world we live in
The page "Masturbation", which I cannot edit myself, is biased and the people who are opposing my changes, I believe do not share their opinions with the majority of Misplaced Pages writers/readers. I requested outside opinions but this request was removed, but I don't know why. So I ask people to look at the page, even if you wouldn't normally read such a page, and see how biased it is, and ask yourselves "does this bullsh*t really reflect the world I live in?" and then look on the discussion page to see my proposed changes, which are being opposed by a minority of people with faulty logic. There is something very wrong going on here.
selected quote:
" it is considered a normal part of healthy life today" with no reference. Opinion, and they will not remove it.
-- No it is not. I do not believe it is entirely socially acceptable in any society, (apart from a few microcultural examples e.g. certain indigenous tribes) and in many conservative/religious societies (e.g. Islamic countries, many rural areas across the world) it is not acceptable at all. They are confusing the views of science and medicine (which does not 100% say it is fine, hence the use of terms like "excessive masturbation", "compulsive masturbation" in medical and psychological publications) with the views of society. I proposed then to split these views, but it was again opposed. They will not even allow mention that masturbation is illegal in public in most countries, apparently that is "not on topic". In some countries, you would face the death penalty for masturbating in public. The article talkes about events (presumably in Western cosmopolitan settings) where a group of perverted people are allowed to masturbate as part of a festival/event, called a "Masturbate-a-thon". I point out that these people would be stoned to death very quickly if they tried that perversion in many countries. Let's have a page that is not biased, is not a "how -to- masturbate" manual, and includes other balanced views.
-- The requests I made to change the article and make it less biased were opposed by quoting some Misplaced Pages rules. I studied these rules in detail and in every case they are falsely applied to this scenario. I also found out that according to these rules, many, many issues involving content of the page which supports the overall biased view. The rules are being selectively applied by a minority to maintain a biased page which does not, I believe represent the views of all.
-- I am very disillusioned by this experience. I used to read Misplaced Pages with interest and admiration, but now everything I see will be suspect in my eyes. How do I know it is not the same scenario-- biased opinion rather than reality? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.183.140.25 (talk) 12:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Adding my Wiki Page
I'm a new user here, and this is probably a dumb question, but my article keeps getting rejected. I am a professional drummer, and have played on several major label recordings over the past 5 years including Cee-Lo, Gnarls Barkley, and others. I added my own "user" page to wikipedia and then linked to it from Cee-Lo's page, for instance. (Because my name already exists on his page, it just hadn't been linked to anywhere).
Can anyone tell me if this is best/right way to add myself to Misplaced Pages? Why does it keep getting rejected?
Pages i've mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Bradhagen http://en.wikipedia.org/Bright_Lights_Bigger_City http://en.wikipedia.org/The_Lady_Killer_(album)
Thanks for your help!
Bradhagen (talk) 14:52, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm afraid there is no best way to add yourself to Misplaced Pages, because you are strongly discouraged from ever doing so: see WP:autobiography for more information. On your user page User:Bradhagen you are welcome to share as much or as little about yourself as a Misplaced Pages editor that you wish to, but you should not attempt to write an article about yourself there or anywhere else. --ColinFine (talk) 14:55, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Well, for starters you are generally encouraged not to create an article about yourself due to Conflict Of Interest. You sound Notable enough, but your article would need citations from reliable sources to verify the content is true. WP:BIO is also a useful place for information, and i expect you to at least read WP:Your first article for more advice in this area. Thanks ツ Jenova20 15:05, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) - Creating a page about yourself is discouraged and will most likely be deleted. - No problem. Yes, I didn't (and wouldn't) touch your edit. Personally I tend to be slow in creating red links to people whose notability I'm unsure of, but it's a matter of individual taste, I think. And I could have been clearer, I guess, by using {{replyto}}; I missed the possibility of ambiguity in who my comment was directed to. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 02:11, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm using GMT so Misplaced Pages is showing everything one hour off, which is causing me issues. I've already warned someone for vandalism after someone else already did. You would think Misplaced Pages would have something as simple as time zones sorted before pursuing notifications and cosmetic changes... Thanks ツ Jenova20 10:56, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Why has my time zone changed?
For some reason i am now seeing edits i make appear 1 hour behind. I am still set to London time but it is displaying my edits 1 hour behind. This must be a bug as it did not do this recently. Anyone know more? Thanks ツ Jenova20 15:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages uses UTC - due to it being BST atm, all edits appear 1 hour behind - they will go in sync when you go back to GMT. Mdann52 (talk) 15:47, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm pretty ignorant of things like this to be honest. I do not know anything about UTC or BST at all. Do you know when things will go back to "normal" or do i have to do something to fix it? Thanks ツ Jenova20 15:52, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- You can set your time zone at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-datetime. It doesn't affect times in signatures but for those you can try "Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:01, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Or you can wait until 27 October, when British Summer Time ends, and the UK goes back to Greenwich Mean Time. For almost all practical purposes GMT = UTC, so you are on UTC during the winter, but an hour ahead during the summer. Misplaced Pages uses UTC, as the local dates and times of editors around the world can be up to 26 hours apart (26, not 24, see List of UTC time offsets for the explanation) - Arjayay (talk) 16:29, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- My time zone is set and it displays the right time. But when i sign i see everything 1 hour behind and it's irritating as it makes following posts a little more difficult (for a dyslexic). Thanks ツ Jenova20 19:40, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
New editor help?
I am not a new editor, and I am also not good at talking to individuals on their talk page. However, I frequently see new editors bombarded with "canned" messages that take the "bombarder" seconds to post, but must totally discourage the new editor. Any advice to such new editors? Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 15:45, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- The intention of these canned messages is not to discourage the newcomer. However I agree that it is the likely effect. My advice to new editors is to start very cautiously, fixing typos and suchlike until they feel more confident, so as not to attract the attention of the people who post these patronising messages. I have little (or indeed no) understanding of how wikidata works, so how can the two be combined into one so that all of the interlanguage links show up correctly on all the articles (presumably that's what "right" would look like)? Thanks danno_uk 22:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm no expert on Wikidata conflicts but the challenge with wikidata:Q18983 and wikidata:Q3702043 is that Spanish and Italian have separate articles about the Flag of Pennsylvania and the Coat of arms of Pennsylvania, so there has to be separate Wikidata entries for the flag and for the coat of arms. The English article covers both. All the other languages appear to only have an article about the flag, at least judged by the article title – I haven't examined whether the articles also mention the coat of arms. I don't know whether there is a better solution than choosing one of the two for the English article. It's currently under Coat of arms. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:44, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, that makes some sense. Well done for spotting that. The query came about because another editor deleted the old style interlanguage list and I reinstated it because otherwise all that was left were It and Es links. I guess until some more permanent resolution is reached that's how it should stay. Thanks again. danno_uk 23:32, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, if the two items in Wikidata are really the same, then they can be merged, and there's a gadget available in Wikidata for doing the merge. But if they are not quite the same (for example, one is a subset of the other) then they must be separate in Wikidata.
- In fact, in this case it's even more complicated, because the Spanish and Italian articles are the coat of arms, most of the articles are to the flag, and only the English appears to be both, so I've created a third item flag and coat of arms of Pennsylvania, and made that to link to the English article. Unfortunately, though this is right, it is even more unhelpful for the purpose of interlanguage links. What I have done is to link these three together in Wikidata with the property "subclass of", but I don't think there is any way that that can be reflected in the interlanguage links. --ColinFine (talk) 14:47, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Addition: Help:Interlanguage links explains that you can still use the old-fashioned direct link ("local links") to override the Wikidata ones. --ColinFine (talk) 14:56, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Brewery
I tried to start a new entry for a local small town brewery called "The Damascus Brewery" and it does not show up. The help desk people in the chat room for wikipedia said that they could see it and that it was all set to be reviewed but now I don't see it as ever being created, denied, or anything. Does its entry still exist? Do I need to go through the process of writing the article again? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamthefirecracker (talk • contribs) 22:58, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

- Hey Adam, you wouldn't happen to be the Adam Woodson mentioned in the article, would you? If so, I'd like to dissuade you from editing further, because you could have a conflict of interest. Misplaced Pages isn't a vanity site or the Yellow Pages. If the brewery is notable, then it should have coverage from sources independent of itself. If it's (as you said) just a "local small town brewery", it's possible that it isn't notable enough for inclusion. If you can find reliable sources that establish its notability, then the article could pass. Until then, it'll just keep getting deleted for being spam. And if you're not the same Adam, ignore everything I just said, except for the parts about bringing in reliable sources independent of the subject. We still need that. need a change to the Jenna marbles page
Hi my name is Deborah Mourey.. I am Jenna Mourey (Marbles) mom.
On her page... http://en.wikipedia.org/Jenna_Marbles
it reads that Sarah Penna is her agent... Sarah hasn't been her agent for quite some time. I just signed up for an account but since it's a semi protected page.. I can't change it right now.
I am acting as her primary contact; what's interesting is that I think I used to be listed on her page as her parent with a link to my website and the agent wasn't listed there at all and now it's changed back to the way the page was probably 2 years ago. So any help you can give me to remove Sarah's name and replace it with mine would be greatly appreciated. Best Deborah Mourey — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deborah mourey (talk • contribs) 02:00, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hello, ma'am. I don't question your veracity, but Misplaced Pages policy prefers that information like that be reliably sourced. Since it's a fairly straight-forward, low-profile bit of data, if she were to mention you as her agent in the contact/booking section of her website/vlog, or otherwise publicly ascribe to you the title of "agent", I'd imagine that wouldn't bump too hard against our sourcing guidelines. In the interim, I'll delete Sarah Penna's mention as it too is unsourced. The double-edge sword swings in your favor! (half way...) Also, since you are her mother, and ostensibly her booking agent, you might want to review our policies about conflicts of interest. Your best bet, should you wish to influence edits on her article is to either learn how to make edit requests via the article's talk page, or come to the help desk with good citations, and we can likely help out. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:32, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Fixed Removed Sarah Penna as agent. -- Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:32, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- The information was added by this edit, on May 21. I'm going to ask the editor who added it why he did so. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:19, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Even though it's coded in the ibox template, I don't think "agent" is an appropriate parameter - seems spammy to me.--ukexpat (talk) 15:40, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Link shortening?
I have created a template from the basis of the {{welcome}} template that includes a paragraph asking users with non-latin character usernames to check out WP:Username_policy#Usernames_with_non-Latin_characters. At the bottom of the template I have included google translate links that translates the contents of the template into every non-Latin character language the google translate service currently provides. I have to use bit.ly as a link shortener for these links, because the direct google translate links cannot be posted, as they contain ~~~~ and consequently mess up the formatting of the template.
The template is located here; To see how it looks with the translation links, please see screenshot here.
For example, here is a screenshot of the first link, which is the translation for Arabic-speaking users. You can see from the highlighted URL the 4 tildes which prevent the posting of the orginal, google-translate link due to formatting issues. You cannot wrap nowiki tags around them to solve this because doing that renders the link useless (404 error)
I believe the addition of these translation links to the template would prove invaluable. It is unfortunate that the direct google translate links cannot be used due to the URL problem and the link shortener bit.ly must be used, but I can't think of another solution. However, in no circumstances will link-shortening links be whitelisted by the external link spam filter so I cannot post the template properly.
Is there anything else I could do to make them work?
Cheers,

- Good question, probably asked at the wrong place (most editors here are generalists). I suggest either Misplaced Pages:Requested templates (despite the name, it's a place to get advice) or WP:VPT - but not both at the same time. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 06:07, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- You could try
{{urlencode:{{<includeonly>safesubst:</includeonly>REVISIONUSER}} ~~<includeonly></includeonly>~~<includeonly></includeonly>~}}
, which should encode the user name and timestamp in the URL in a form that Google Translate will understand: John+of+Reading+07%3A24%2C+27+June+2013+%28UTC%29
- But including 20 or so Google Translate URLs will make the template very long. How about a list of links to subpages of the template itself, such as User:Feedthepope/Template:Welcome non-latin/Arabic, which could contain a translation of the text with proper clickable wikilinks? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:24, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, both of you. John (of Reading :) ) that's an excellent idea, I'll get right onto it. Feedthepope (talk) 14:36, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

'Popular Alm'
Popular Alm (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
I was reading your article on the great harness horse "Popular Alm' and noticed that your list of owners was incorrect. I know this because my wife's Uncle - Jack Taggart was an owner and he was not amongst your listed owners. I have since been in touch with Harness Victoria and they have confirmed that Jack Taggart was indeed an owner during his racing career. I believe that the owners were V Knight, J Taggart and the "Sun Group".

- Without knowing what page you are here about, I suspect that what you are seeing in the section is either the display of a template, or a section of another page in include only tags. I'll explain the first only, because the latter is rarer. See Help:Template to learn about templates. In short, if you are seeing in the section you are trying to edit something like {{Name}}, then copy the name, go to Misplaced Pages's search field and type Template:Name and then you should see the text that is displaying (being transcluded) in the article. From there you can edit it but be wary of changing any code therein you don't understand.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:46, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Article has been delete by mistake
Hi,
I had created an article about Afdesta international festival but it has been deleted surprisingly. I see the reason is advertisement but i cant determine how writing about a non-commercial festival could be type of advertisement ?
I want my article back ! Afdesta Online Festival
Thanks— Preceding unsigned comment added by Irreporter (talk • contribs)
- A subject doesn't have to "commercial" for the article about it to be promotional. Anything can be promoted/advertised. You can ask the admin who deleted it User:Tokyogirl79, to undeleted it to your sandbox where you will have to fix the problems before returning it to mainspace. You are also welcome to use the Articles for creation process where you will receive guidance until it is an acceptable article. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:11, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Pretty much what Dodger67 said. I don't mind letting you userfy it, but the other big issue is that I don't see where the event has really received any coverage in reliable sources (WP:RS) such as newspapers and the like. I see plenty of WP:PRIMARY sources, but no actual coverage that would give notability as far as Misplaced Pages is considered. All articles have to have established notability. You can work on a userpage copy, but you wouldn't be able to move it to the mainspace until it meets notability guidelines. Let me know on my talk page if you're interested in a userpage copy. Crashing columns
The columns in the article National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame run into each other, making them difficult to read. I've tried reducing their width to 3 x 30% and inserting 2 x 5% blank columns between, which spaces the first two columns but breaks the format of the third - how can the columns be spaced apart? - Arjayay (talk) 09:08, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- I have reformatted the table in a more standard way - will this do? I note that each entry includes a pipe symbol, possibly left over from when the list was a Misplaced Pages-style table. Maybe these could be deleted. Maproom (talk) 10:59, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, it is certainly more readable - albeit that the columns are different widths - I'll remove the pipes - Arjayay (talk) 11:12, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- Maybe you could also leave out the dates of birth and death, as these are easily available from the linked Misplaced Pages pages. Maproom (talk) 11:42, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Dalai Lama
Sir, I'm a regular wikipedia user and I also use to contribute articles on Wiki. The worst mistake I have ever seen on Misplaced Pages is the nationality of HH the Dalai Lama. - He was born in Amdo in 1938. The one article I looked has his birthplace as China. The Amdo article states "...however, most of the communities of the rural areas of Amdo and Kham remained under their own local, Tibetan lay and monastic leaders into the 1950s." The text used in articles and the watchlist is too small for me to read easily. If I use Firefox, I can choose to enlarge the page with the browser controls and Firefox will remember to do that just for Misplaced Pages. But Internet Explorer will apply the setting to all pages, which I don't want. Is there a way to make Internet Explorer only enlarge Misplaced Pages? One baby, two biological fathers
Is Partible paternity a hoax article? It bases its notability on the claim that one child can have two biological fathers, but then downplays that assertion by calling it a "concept" in the second and third sentences. And look at the horrendous sourcing for the article. If my instincts are correct on this, can someone please take steps to have the article deleted? --76.189.109.155 (talk) 23:50, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- I've deleted the word "biological" from the article, because the examples from folklore appear to be non-biological fatherhood. It is not a hoax article. It has been here since 2007. What is wrong with the sourcing, anyway? If you don't like the article, improve it, or comment on the talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:57, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
- It is worth noting that in some 'western' societies, common law asserts 'presumption of paternity, which may make a man the legal father of his wife's child, even if he isn't the biological parent. I'll check the sources though, and see if the article needs further clarification. AndyTheGrump (talk) 00:03, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Robert, your removal of the word "biological" eliminates the article's claim of notability, which is that one child can have two biological fathers. Obviously, though, your removal of that key word indicates your agreement that the article's claim of one child, two biological fathers is completely unsubstantiated. There are zero reliable sources that verify that claim. You also asked me what's wrong with the sourcing. Well, there are just three sources. The first is this page, which says nothing about one baby, two biological fathers. The second is simply the name of a book, and the cite doesn't give any detailed information about where the information can be found that supposedly verifies the content in the article. The third is this direct link to some woman's personal blog (and of course says nothing about a child having two biological fathers). Do you consider this reliable sourcing? And why, as you suggested, would I try to improve an article where there are no reliable sources to verify its claim of notability? Thanks Andy for your input, but of course presumption of paternity is a completely different issue. It's simply a legal determination about which one man is presumed to be the father of a child. But thanks for looking into it. Anyway, if the claim being made is that partible paternity is basically a concept associated with shared parenting, then the article should be clearly presented that way and include solid, reliable sources to verify all of its content. Thanks. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 00:40, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
I've just researched the history of the article and this is the glaring edit (five years after the article was created) that changed the entire direction of the article! Look at the changes made to the opening paragraph, and of course read the edit summary. A night and day difference in the definition of partible paternity from the day the article was created. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 00:59, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
And for the record, although the article has indeed been around for almost eight years, it's only had one or two edits per year since then. In fact, it went about two and a half years with no edits at all. So it's an article that's essentially been hidden far below the radar. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 01:01, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- It seems the article needs looking into properly - thanks for bringing it to our attention. As for whether some societies have believed (or even still do) that having two fathers is biologically possible, I suspect that the answer may well depend on what is meant by 'biology' in the context - and as my studies in anthropology remind me, such questions are seldom easy to answer - or perhaps best not actually answered at all, if one has to shoehorn another culture's concepts into our own to do so. AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:13, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- You're very welcome, Andy. Thanks for the friendly assistance and additional information! --76.189.109.155 (talk) 01:15, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Anthropology to the rescue: "...among the Mehinaku of Brazil, speakers of a language in the Arawak family, Thomas Gregor found two theories of conception: “Both theories assert that one sexual act is insufficient to conceive a child. Rather, the infant is formed through repeated acts of intercourse. Since all but three of the village women are involved in extramarital affairs, the semen of the mother’s husband may form only a portion of the infant.... Joint paternity is further recognized at birth when the putative fathers of the baby honor attenuated versions of the couvade and acceptsome of the obligations of in-laws when the child grows up and gets married" AndyTheGrump (talk) 01:29, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

- Admin needs to delete the redirect first. I usually just tag the redirect speedy (un-contentious maintenance), then move after deletion, and the re-create a new redirect.--Canoe1967 (talk) 01:58, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- I've tagged the redirect with {{db-move}} with an explanation. :) Charmlet (talk) 02:01, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Yes TG, Tableau Vivant (Modern Family), an episode of the show, currently redirects to Modern Family, the show's article. But that's wrong and you are correct. All Modern Family episodes that have titles of existing articles should be titled using the "Episode Title (Modern Family)" format. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 02:03, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks everyone for the help. I am here only 2 weeks and still trying to learn. And from what I see, I am glad I didn't remove the redirect on my own. Charmlet thanks for adding the tag. Hopefully an administration can help :) TeamGale (talk) 02:12, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Glossary breakdown
Glossary of cue sports terms uses Template:Gloss through the whole article. Half way through 'L' it breaks and becomes unreadable. The article is 350kB which is huge. I tried a couple times to fix but the WMF error page keeps showing up. I don't know if it is my sys or the connection. There are lots of glossary template bugs and bug fixes on the talk page. Does anyone else want to look into it?--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:22, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- First time I've ever come to the help desk and seen one my pet articles raised here. I've fixed the issue, which was that {{cuegloss}} and {{cuegloss2}} have been nominated for deletion and the nominator failed to enclose the tfd template in noinclude tags. Glad you were on the alert.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:53, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- No problem. Resolved--Canoe1967 (talk) 03:06, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Fatal exception message
Hi, I keep getting this message when I try to edit or just access my watchlist - 2013-06-28 04:57:40: Fatal exception of type MWException - Can this be fixed, please? Rskp (talk) 05:04, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, look, sorry about that, it seems to have fixed itself. Thanks anyway. Rskp (talk) 05:06, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Seems like the whole site was down for about 15 minutes. I could only access the mainpage; click on anything else and you got that error. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about it.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:10, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Wow, that was an ugly outage. I told Fuhgettaboutit not to click that big red button that said "destroy the site". :p And, uh, the toolbar here is gone, so I have to manually type my four tildes. Haha. 76.189.109.155 (talk) 05:26, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

problems with uploading & clicking to pictures
Hi I don't know why but an "internal fatal error" notice in a red box comes up when I've edited an article or if I click on a picture to see the bigger file. Contents of box reads: 2013-06-28 04:59:21: Fatal exception of type MWException - this might just happen again when I submit. What's going on? Fingers crossed. Manytexts (talk) 05:15, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, just saw the section above. Okay. Will wait. Manytexts (talk) 05:17, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
No toolbars when editing
I know the site was down for 15 minutes or so, but does everyone not have a toolbar when they edit pages? I have nothing above the edit box and just a long list of symbols below it. But no links, no templates, no menus, anywhere on the edit page. 76.189.109.155 (talk) 05:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Seems ok to me, but another editor a few questions up made the same comment about missing toolbar. If you're still having that issue, you should ask at the Village Pump. RudolfRed (talk) 06:25, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- See this thread I started at VP. I hope they fix this soon. 76.189.109.155 (talk) 07:20, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Word is that the site was actually down for about 45 minutes. Now if I could just get back the normal edit page. Can't do everything manually forever. Haha. I'm sure there are many other edtiors having the same problem. 76.189.109.155 (talk) 07:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Where is the "Advice to academics" page?
There is a page somewhere that explains the "tertiary source" nature of WP to writers who are more used to writing in acadamic journals. I need it to help an editor who is attempting to write an article here about his current research towards his PhD - "I do plan to publish my synthesis in a peer reviewed journal in organic chemistry and this process will be easier when the reviewer can view the short but sweet Misplaced Pages article on the compound."<User talk:Dodger67#Submitted article on chemical compound RU58841> -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:35, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Profile
I wanted to know what does it take to have a wikipedia profile of your own? Does someone have to be rich, famous or infamous etc...
What if I want to create my own wikipedia profile, can I? I have several online articles on crime, politics etc...I can have a good enough profile, what would it take? Does the Wiki team decide this?
Do reply please,

- Do you want to write an article about yourself, or about an encyclopedic topic about which you are knowledgeable? In the former case, writing an article about yourself is strongly discouraged. See the policies on conflict of interest and on autobiography. In the latter case, please be sure that the topic is not already covered in one of our articles. If it is in one of our articles, but you want to add content, you may edit the article. If it is not covered, then you may create an article, but you are advised to first read our policies and guidelines so that your contributions are neutral, not overly promotional, and are otherwise encyclopedic. - You are not currently registered. Creating a registered account has several advantages, including the privilege of creating new articles. Robert McClenon (talk) 12:16, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- "Famous or infamous" might get someone an article depending on just how famous or infamous they are - more specifically see the Notability standard - I'm a afraid merely being "rich" won't do it. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:34, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages does not contain profiles: it is not a directory. It contains articles, which are neutrally written summaries of what has already been written in reliable published places about notable subjects. --ColinFine (talk) 14:02, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
100K Initiative, Project Pengyou, and Golden Bridges
Hello!
I was wondering if Obama's 100K Strong Initiative, as well as organizations Golden Bridges and Project Pengyou (Both of which are affiliated with the initiative), are notable enough to write Misplaced Pages articles on. I believe they are very important organizations that promote Chinese and American cultural understanding, which will be key in the development of these two country's very important relationship, not to mention global relations as a whole.
Thanks for your help! Joey — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jfritz14 (talk • contribs) 09:56, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- I would suggest bringing this up on the talk page of the US-China Relations article. You say which will be key which sounds like something that may happen in the future (see WP:CRYSTAL). That wouldn't be suitable encyclopaedic content. If reliable, notable, sources describe these organizations in conjuction with relations between those 2 countries then adding them to that article may be the best approach. - You created a draft, but didn't submit it for review. You would need to click the link that says "Submit your draft when you are ready for it to be reviewed!". Before that, however, you ought to read Misplaced Pages's guidance on conflict of interest. It is difficult for someone with a conflict of interest to write an article with a neutral point of view, and it is likely that an attempt will be seen as promotional, which I think is the case for your draft. You also need to read WP:Referencing for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Click "Contributions" at the top of any page to see your edits. You created Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Standard Alliance Insurance. The box at the top says "Article not currently submitted for review." If you want to submit it then click the green button saying "Submit your draft when you are ready for it to be reviewed!" It will probably be rejected in the current form. I recommend you make it far less promotional before submitting. See Help:Section for how to make section headings so the table of contents is automatically generated. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:30, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Article Creation - ការបង្កើតអត្ថបទ - L'création de l'article
- I would like to create an article, but I have no English sources, only Cambodian. Is this permissible?
--Khmer Prun Them (talk) 13:11, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, articles on the English Misplaced Pages do not require sources to be in English, so you can write an article based on Khmer sources provided they pass the reliable source standard. If you want to write an article in French you can get assistance at fr:Wikipédia:Questions techniques. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:20, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Review an article
Just wanted to know if there is a way or a place where I can put an article I created so it can be reviewed. For example, I've created this article but it didn't get reviewed yet. Do I have to do something to make this possible? Thanks TeamGale (talk) 15:04, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- I have made some minor formatting edits and added a {{new}} template to alert others that it may need reviewing in more depth.--ukexpat (talk) 15:14, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages:Peer review? DonIago (talk) 15:15, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks ukexpat. Can I add this tag on my own in every article I make or someone else has to do it for me? And DonIago thank you so much for the article. I'll go through it but it'll take me some time since it seems long :) Hope it's helpful. TeamGale (talk) 15:32, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Misplaced Pages:Peer review? DonIago (talk) 15:15, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes you can add it yourself. We usually encourage newer users to create drafts in a user sandbox or at WP:AFC first so that they can be reviewed before being moved to the mainspace. If you use a sandbox, you can tag it with {{User draft}}. If you use AFC there are instructions there as to how to tag for review.--ukexpat (talk) 16:03, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

What has happened to my username?
It is red, and though I sign posts as directed (Gimelgort 18:20, 28 June 2013 (UTC)) it reads unsigned thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gimelgort (talk • contribs)
- Tis blue now (it don't turn red until some thing has been added into the text box (in this case just a "full stop")- don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it).--Aspro (talk) 18:31, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- To expand on that a little, your signature (or anywhere else that the link User:Gimelgort appears) links to your personal userpage. However, that page doesn't exist until you or someone else creates it. Misplaced Pages's software marks links to non-existent pages in red (clicking on them will give you the option of creating that page) - since your userpage hadn't been created, your name appeared in red whenever it was linked. Now that there is some content on the page, the link has turned blue, indicating that the link's target is an existing page. You can edit your userpage to supply other editors with information about yourself; see the usrepage guidelines for more information about this. Yunshui 雲水 19:04, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- The easiest way to get a valid signature is to leave the "Signature" field at Special:Preferences blank, and not have a checkmark at "Treat the above as wiki markup". PrimeHunter (talk) 19:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
St.
Good afternoon,
I am a Communications Specialist writing on behalf of the St. Ceilingtile1234 (talk) 20:07, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
