Mike Feerick is an Irish social entrepreneur and founder of ALISON (company), an Ireland–based e-learning social enterprise cited as the first MOOC. He is an Ashoka Fellow and active figure in the online education industry. He is also the founder of Ireland Reaching Out, a "reverse" genealogy project based in Ireland.

Professional Career

Feerick is the former CEO and founder of Yac.com Limited, a web–based unified messaging telecoms provider. He served as the Acting Managing Director of Interactive Investor International and has also held positions with Bertelsmann Music Group. Feerick previously owned the franchise rights to JFAX Ireland which sold to Esat Telecom in 1999. His subsequent venture with Yac sold to Nasdaq-listed J2 Global Communications in 2007. Born in New York but raised in Ireland, he credits philanthropist Chuck Feeney, an early mentor, for his interest in social entrepreneurship.

ALISON

Feerick's most notable business venture came in 2007 when he launched ALISON (company) (Advance Learning Interactive Systems Online), a MOOC-based e-learning platform. The company provides free online interactive education courses for people who need to obtain the basic workplace skills. In 2010 Feerick was awarded an Honorable Mention Award in ICT at the UNESCO King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize in Paris as current CEO of ALISON.

Social and Community Initiatives

Ireland Reaching Out

Feerick founded Ireland Reaching Out in 2009 as a means of connecting people of Irish descent to their ancestral roots in Ireland. Engaging the help of Irish economist David McWilliams, Feerick pitched the idea to the Irish government. Beginning in the South-East Galway region, Ireland Reaching Out began inviting back the descendants of emigrants who had left Ireland to visit their ancestral homes. Feerick received the endorsement of an Arthur Guinness Fund award for Social Entrepreneurship in recognition of the community-centred work of Ireland Reaching Out and its impact on the global Irish diaspora.

University of Limerick

A graduate of the University of Limerick, Feerick was the founding chairman of the International Advisory Board of Kemmy Business School, Ireland's largest undergraduate business school at the University and is a director of the University of Limerick Foundation.
