United Bates of America is an American reality television show on TLC. The show is about the Bates family, a "mega-family" consisting of Gil and Kelly Bates and their 19 children living in Lake City, Tennessee. The show premiered on August 13, 2012; additional episodes aired over the next several weeks.
The family also appeared on several episodes of the TLC reality TV series 19 Kids and Counting, which features their friends, the Duggar family of Arkansas, another family that includes 19 children. A TLC special about the Bates family, The Bates Family: Baby Makes 19, aired on March 13, 2012.
Family
Parents Gil and Kelly Jo Bates both grew up in South Carolina. They met as undergraduate students, attending Anderson College in South Carolina and Carson Newman College in Tennessee. They were married in 1987. As evangelical Christians, early in their marriage they decided that they would not use birth control, instead "let the Lord decide how many children we would have".
The nineteen Bates children are nine boys and ten girls. In order from oldest to youngest, they are:

Gil Bates is engaged in the business of cutting and trimming trees, aided by the couple's older sons.
The Bates family house has 4,000 square feet (370 m) of space, including five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and two kitchens, as well as a schoolroom for the children's homeschooling. To accommodate the family's large volume of laundry, there are five clothes washers and three dryers. In late 2010, the family was reported to be in the process of expanding the house. As of March 2012, when the first TV show about the family was aired, the family did not own a television and did not plan to acquire one. Gil Bates expressed his opposition to the medium, saying "TV can be a big time-waster", but told a reporter that the family would go to a local hotel to watch themselves on TV.
In 2010, the oldest Bates child, Zach Bates, was elected to the Anderson County Commission, becoming the youngest person ever to be elected to that office. His siblings helped in his campaign. In 2012, the family actively supported the candidacy of Rick Santorum for the Republican presidential nomination.
