It is with regret that I have to announce my leaving of this project. I had not done much the last year, because I am mostly active on the Dutch Misplaced Pages now. But those things that I did had all to do with policy, and it is becoming more and more clear that my ideas of what an encyclopedia should be differ from those who are 'in command'. To avoid further clashes leading to upsetting others and myself, I am now withdrawing to nl:. I have asked to be de-sysoped, and wiam planning to not do anything but interwiki-links here any more.

Actually, I've had the idea many times before to, but usually was back in a few days or weeks... But last time it happened, I did go to nl: more or less for good... Though I agree with you about the zaniness (I added the caveat lector), I think you should go through the deleted text and selectively restore the baby that was thrown out with the murky bathwater. I'm not alone in hoping that you can derive pleasure at the English-language Misplaced Pages once again and keep it moving forward. Relax! Remember, every library should have engraved over its door: CAVEAT LECTOR. Sometimes it feels as if Misplaced Pages is undermined at every turn by what my grandmother called "dirt-road Baptists." Many Baptist churches however, even in America, are on paved roads. So, if you don't feel your voice is being heard, and if zanies with dishonest agendas are overwhelming you, back off! Cut the article from your watchlist. Come back months later and see if there is anything useful in the overgrowth. I leave that to you. As far as I'm concerned, there is no problem with deleting it, but do so only through VfD, not directly. Alternatively, you could add a second image to the page, or just keep it cluttering up the database. Andre Engels 12:14, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Ha die Andre, Je hebt de link met Hazalaar en Hazel en Hazelnut omgewisselt. Ik heb hier echter naar gekeken; de hazelnoot is C. avellana en de Hazel gaat over het hele geslacht. Hi Andre, I see you operate a disambiguation bot. I was wondering whether you could run a disambig for me. The article biological cell was recently renamed cell (biology) and there are 100-200 links to biological cell which I'm not too keen to fix manually (to avoid double redirects). Could you run the bot to correct this? All links should be disambiguated like this:

Cleanup damage

Hi, i'm on a self-appointed mission that may be of no importance, and tho IMO it is unlikely to be the result of anything you shouldn't have done, i think you should know that your edit of Cleanup just after midnight UTC was logged as two edits, with the second inserting an extra copy of the whole file inside itself. If you think you might have hit "Save" twice, take counsel about the impact; if not it may be a server bug.

    • Bugs are still being found, so I'm not going to say which do not have it. table2wiki.py might well have bugs, in interwiki.py there might well be. Also, the constant change of Misplaced Pages tends to cause (easily repaired) bugs too (like, the special namespace on some language being changed, that has to be added as well).
    • Regarding the Python license: They all fall under it; maybe they have to, since technically they are extensions of the Python program, which falls under that license.     • Well, it would probably be possible to write a bot that takes a page in Latin alphabet, and transcribes it to Greek or vice versa. I don't see the use for it though - the Greek Misplaced Pages is already in Greek, and the rest should not be. The images on Misplaced Pages ought to be free usable by anyone under some free license like the GNU/FDL. Whether that's always the case, is another thing. Germans

I've for long (a year, actually) been itched by the way Misplaced Pages-links are done with often sloppy distinctions between nationality, citizenship and ethnicity (with regard to persons) and also between nations and countries. This is particularly obvious in the case of people or entities that are denoted as German. A link to the Federal Republic of Germany is often outright unhistorical and wrong, but this has until now been the most usual.

Therefore I'm considering an article on Germans, which I've started at User:Ruhrjung/Germans. I would wish to avoid lots of edit wars. In particular, I would not wish to see the current disputes over German-Polish matters automatically extend also to this article, why I kindly ask you for comments now, in advance, in order to try to find wordings acceptable to as many as possible of concerned wikipedians.

I don't think I'm the best person to judge User:Ruhrjung/Germans. What I do wonder is how it is supposed to solve the problem you had. You could put this text on the page of ethnic German, I guess, but the problem you talk about does not get solved. And if you put it on 'Germany' or 'German', the amount of problems you create seem larger than the amount that is solved. As for the text itself - I cannot judge this kind of thing, and even if I could, I might not want to get involved anyway. - Andre Engels 07:29, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)

One way to avoid the inappropriate redirects you point out is to make a small tweak to the code so that the bot doesn't create a redirect that has either two commas or parentheses in the title. I've also responded on my talk page. -- Seth Ilys 12:58, 25 May 2004 (UTC)

Skins for some languages.

Hi André!

Some using Cyrillic languages, like Bashkir, has problems with fonts: some extra Cyrillic letters, using in Bashkir, don't exist to base fonts, such as Times New Roman, Arial, Courier. But they are in Arial unicode MS. so... May be will be good to use Arial Unicode MS font as main skin in Bashkir, Uyghur, and another languages, which will be in Misplaced Pages later. --Untifler 16:45, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well, there is a possibility with the Python wikipedia bot to do so, and you can upload an image at WikiCommons, after which it can be used at any Misplaced Pages. If you want your pictures to be used on other Wikipedias as well, upload them at Commons! - Andre Engels 19:30, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't know how to do that. You'll have to ask someone else. But I still wonder why it would not be possible - from the main page, I get the idea Chuvash is written in Cyrillic alphabet, and other Cyrillic Wikipedias (like ru:) also did not change the font, as far as I can see. - Andre Engels 22:25, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in my answering. Yes, Pybalo and Lourdes (she is just Lourdes in es.wiktionary) are administrators but I think they are only in es.wikipedia, I think they are not administrators yet in es.wiktionary. Regarding the unilateral locking of sh.wikipedia

Hi Andre,

While sh.wikipedia is indeed supposed to have been superceeded, as far as I am aware the most recent official decision was to reopen it because although Serbocroatian is no longer the official language of a state, there are still people who advocate its use.

I'm also curious, did you follow procedure before locking it, or did you just lock it without talking about it at all first?

Article Licensing and Robbot

I've "started" the Free the Rambot Articles Project which aims to get users to release all of their contributions to the U.S. state, county, and city articles under the CC-by-sa 1.0 and 2.0 license (at minimum) or into the public domain if they prefer. A secondary goal is to get those users to release ALL of their edits for ALL articles. I've personally chosen to multi-license all of the rambot and Ram-Man contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License so that other projects, such as WikiTravel, can use our articles. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all your (and especially the User:Robbot) contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or even {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case, since the Robbot's number of edits is in the top ten most. If you do want to do it, simply just copy and paste one of the above two templates into your user page and it will allow us to track those users who have done it. For example:

Option 1
I agree to ] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

OR

Option 2
I agree to ] all my contributions to any ], county, or city article as described below:

As Sannse said, this is a bit of an awkward time for the MedCom. If you don't wait any longer, perhaps you could just ask one of the dead certs for the MedCom personally? Hello Andre Engels I am currently writing an article on the classification of Quadrilaterals. I am sure you are aware of the (general) trapezium and the isosceles trapezium. To take the analogy into its dual form we can speak of a kite (as you know it) as the dual form of an isosceles trapezium (where the non parallel sides have equal lengths). I suspect that over a couple of generations the usage of (general) kite as a quadrilateral where one of the diagonals is bisected by the other has slipped to mean isosceles kite (where one of the diagonals is bisected by the other AT 90 DEGREES) I would describe the picture of the Kite on Misplaced Pages as an isosceles Kite. Its dual would then be an isosceles trapeium and the dual of a (general) kite would be a (general) trapezium. I use the British (Australian) sense of Trapezium. I would not change your article myself but point it out to you.

Order of interlang links - Which is your policy?

Hello. Could you let me know your(and your bot's) policy of ordering interlang links? I saw your vote on Misplaced Pages:Language order poll#By order of alphabet, based on two letter code in Jul 2004. However, you and your bot don't seem to edit as "By order of alphabet, based on two letter code," instead, according to some edit by you (you left ja: after no:) and by your bot (your bot moved ja: after no:), you seem to prefer "By order of alphabet, based on local language" now. Is this correct? I myself consider changing the policy from "ja: after it:" to "think Japanese as Nihongo(local lang) and put ja: after no:" ...But I wouldn't dare act against interlang likning bots. I am trying to figure out the the copyright status of Image:Santa Maria del Fiore.jpg. It seems to have been taken from nl:Afbeelding:Santa Maria del Fiore.jpg, about which there has been debate on nl. I cannot understand this discussion, but I notice that you were involved. a heads-up on the List of Guantanamo Bay detainees

Since you voted to keep the article List of Guantanamo Bay detainees I thought I would give you a "heads-up". A copyright violation was filed against the article, on October 11th. It was filed by someone who had voted to delete the article on October 5th.

I believe that the copyright violation is entirely bogus. I believe it is bogus because, as explained in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service, lists of facts, like lists of names, cannot be copyright. This Feist v. Rural case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, which made the possibly counter-intuitive ruling that the amount of effort someone put in to compiling a list plays no role in determining whether that list is eligible for copyright protection.

Even if alphabetic lists of names could be copyright, I believe the wikipedia list would not be violating copyright since the list was compiled from various sources.

Yes, I have considered that this user invoked a bogus copyright violation to achieve a result that failed in the {AfD}. Yes, I asked them to terminate the copyright violation process, in light of Feist v Rural. They declined. The backlog in the administrators dealing with copyright violations seems to be on the order of a month long.

Anyhow, I wanted the people who had shown interest in the article to not freak out, or feel betrayed, by seeing the copyright violation tag. -- Geo Swan 11:45, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about the Kinthup copyright blunder. I don't know how I missed the edit summary. I was dealing with the articles in Category:Articles that need to be wikified. About 50-75% of the new articles longer than a paragraph in the category are copyright violations (the category as a whole has less, since we weed them out). It's so bad that those of us who wikify can hardly get anything done. I guess I got sloppy. I'm glad you caught it. Robot attention to interwikis that are placed in templates

Hi! In a few wikipedias the interwikis of certain project pages, notably the village pumps, are put in templates to simplify the code of the project pages. For example,

Do you know if, and how, the robots can be programmed not to put interwikis in those pages, but automatically put them in the respective templates, or must we clean up in each case? Is there some other, robot-related forum where such things could be discussed? (BTW, some users feel that interwikis should not be put in templates at all, because linking should be easy – especially for "newbies". But that's quite a different issue.) I think I already know what happened: I saw the error on a Misplaced Pages mirror, and used the link from there to the article, but it linked to the old version that they had copied rather than the current one. I then corrected that old version, causing me to unintendedly revert all subsequent edits. May I add that I find very peculiar that Cool Cat feels allowed to change these pages without consulting the local communities first, even re-reverting after he has been reverted in two occasions (es: and fr:), yet gets angry with his opponents for reverting him on other wikis than their own? I also find his remarks here and here to sound like he has very little feeling for community. "It should not bring a lot of stress - I did a lot of work on this, it should just be blanked - do what you want with the page, you're causing me unnecessary stress". As for Anthere threatening to block you: Doing an edit then reverting it does sound like trying to 'force' to me. Your mileage may vary, but just realize that in many non-English Wikipedias there is much resistance against (real or imagined) 'imperialism' from en:. Barging in and make changes because you like them when others don't is not going to increase your popularity.

I dont care about my popularity or wikipolitics. I never had any popularity in the first place. I got harrased constantly by individuals unlike anyone else.
I have been reverted by same people interwiki even when I discussed it with the comunities on IRC and they said it was a good idea. Local comunities who liked the meta idea were also reverted. See th and ja wikipeida. I do not care what goes on wikipedia-l. I blanked to take comunities attention. Posting on talk pages no one looks at will not get anyones attention.
I will revert war on against french wikipedians on japanese wikipedia. If the japanese comunity decided they dont do meta then I would backed down as I did on Nl note that i did so with great disapointment.

Anti vandal script

What are you using to revert vandalism. WP has had a couple fairly big attacks in the last couple of days with a user replacing pages with an image. Do you have a script that I could use that would revert all pages with the said image / edit summary quickly, we had aprox a 400 edit vandalbot in the span of 5 min and a bout would be very very useful. The copyright status of photos you upload needs to be verifiable by other editors. Misplaced Pages:Verifiability is the related policy. If you don't provide an exact source - in the case of a website, meaning an exact URL - then it may not be possible for other editors to verify the copyright status, and your image might be tagged for deletion. I'm not going to tag it because I believe you, but others might not, and would be justified in tagging it. On your statement about self-taken photos, at present the statement that a photo is self-taken is enough. I can see how this is not verifiable, so my bet is that in 10 years the policy will have changed to something where they have to provide some proof that they themselves took the photo ... but I'm speculating about the future. I was in two minds about them myself. They are as you say just two examples, but since we're discussing law on that page they can be seen as precendent or enforcement of precendent. So as I said, I stood on the fence and moved them from the article to the Further reading.
